JONSON, Benjamin
London: William Stansby, 1616. Lacks initial blank as almost always, title-page laid down with some loss at the margins (engraved image being principally unaffected), preliminaries thumbed, intermittent water staining; margins a little smaller than usual yet overall a very good copy of a book typically encountered in poor condition.. Thick folio, recent full calf with crimson label lettered in gilt. First collected edition of the dramatic works and poems of the master playwright Ben Johnson, a milestone in literary history that forms a direct precedent to Shakespeare's first folio printed shortly afterwards in 1623. By publishing his plays in such an advanced format, Jonson elevated the role of dramatic arts from transitory entertainment to serious literature, as noted by the bibliographer H. L. Ford: 'It is noteworthy that no finer printed folio of plays was issued in that century, and it is the first printed in that size; the designation of them as 'Workes' occasioned considerable criticism amongst his fellows, but time has vindicated that they are such, rather than dramatic ephemera for a hungry stage.'Jonson's career was extraordinary even by the standards of his time. Born into humble circumstances he was a brilliant student but worked as a bricklayer before establishing a role in the theatre (John Aubrey depicts him reciting Homer with a trowel in hand). Jonson also served as a soldier in the British force sent to expel the Spanish from Holland in 1591, and narrowly escaped the gallows for murdering a fellow actor in a duel. Never a brilliant actor, Jonson was manifes … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

Dominici Baudii (Dominique Baudier)
Lugduni Batavorum Apud Luduvicium Elzeverium. LEATHER_BOUND. Very scarce early printing of this book from 1616. It is fully bound in vellum, which generally has a slightly dirty browned appearance. This book is entirely written in Latin. Pages are generally a bit foxed or toned but not heavily considering the age of the book. There is no writing or anotations to the book. Baudier was a French Neo-Latin poet, scholar and historian and attained his greatest fame as a latin writer. He was erudite and had great control of Latin. He was one of the best letter-writers of his time and he is considered one of the best poets of the Iambic style in humanism. . Good. 1616.

Smith, John
London, 1616. Small quarto. Full calf in antique style, leather label. Light dampstaining on top edge. Some careful expert paper restoration to upper foremargins of first ten leaves or so (including titlepage), and to a lesser extent on some later leaves. Map trimmed to the neat line, with a very small hole (4 x 25 mm.) at center in the ocean, neatly filled in. Some contemporary manuscript on verso of title- leaf and first text leaf. A nice copy. One of the great rarities of colonial Americana, Smith's A DESCRIPTION OF NEW ENGLAND... was, according to Streeter, "the pilgrim's principal guide to their American haven." Based on Smith's two visits to the New England coast in 1614 and 1615, this book did much to encourage later settlement in New England, preceding by four years the sailing of the Mayflower. In fact, Smith named Plymouth Rock, and described the place as "an excellent good harbour, good lands, and no want of anything but industrious people." Smith's first voyage was financed by a group of London merchants, with the primary objective being the search for whales and gold mines (the gold mines turned out to be "the masters device to get a voyage"). That first visit was relatively brief but afforded ample opportunities for trading with the Indians and for the collection of much geographical and natural history information. On his second voyage in 1615, Smith met with less success; thwarted by storms and pirates, he was eventually taken prisoner by a French warship. During his free time as a captive, Smith wrote A DESCRIPTION OF NEW ENGLAND..., destined to reveal the … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

KEPLER, Johannes
Linz, Hans Blancken, 1616 - Small folio (295 x 185 mm), pp [iv] 113 [3], with paste-on gauging rod on verso of I4; clean tear to blank area of gutter in a1 without loss, the extended woodcut on verso of F3 cropped at foot as often, apart from minor foxing in margins a fresh appealing copy, bound in contemporary quarter calf and speckled papers over boards, raised bands on spine, with calf corners, spine and corners worn, old shelf no. affixed to front cover, engraved bookplate of the Berliner Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde on front pastedown and their discreet stamp on verso of title. First German edition, a significantly revised and reordered version of the Latin Nova Stereometria published the year before, a title 'generally regarded as one of the significant works in the prehistory of the calculus' (Gingerich in DSB).'Desiring to outfit his household with the produce of a particularly good wine harvest, Kepler installed some casks in his house. When he discovered that the wine merchant measured only the diagonal length of the barrels, ignoring their shape, Kepler set about computing their actual volumes. Abandoning the classical Archimedean procedures, he adopted a less rigorous but productive scheme in which he considered that the figures were composed of an infinite number of thin circulae laminae or other cross sections. Captivated by the task, he extended it to other shapes, including the torus' (ibid). According to Gingerich, Kepler was moved to produce this vernacular version when sales of the Latin version proved lacklustre. EPICTETUS
Ex Officina Plantiniana Raphelengii, Leiden, 1616. 64mo, text 7.1cm x 4.4cm (2.8" x 1.7") pp. 247, [9]. Greek and Roman letter, single column parallel text within double-fillet border, including final blanks; decorative piece on title, paper very slightly yellowed. A very good copy in contemporary plain vellum, yapp edges, blind-tooled double-fillet border, a.e.r. On recto of front endpaper, contemporary ms ex libris of ‘Justi Boelij’ and his quotation from St Augustine of Hippo, De Doctrina Christiana. A charming miniature edition of these two influential texts, forming a rare pocket-sized guide to life for any philosopher. Epictetus was a Stoic, who came to Rome as a slave and there studied philosophy under Musonius Rufus before his manumission. Banished by Domitian, he went to Epirus and opened his own philosophical school, which swiftly attracted pupils. His Enchiridion, here with a facing Latin translation, was a manual of Stoic ethics compiled by Epictetus’ most famous pupil, Flavius Arrian. In the Enchiridion, or ‘handbook’, Arrian distills the ideas of Epictetus’ Discourses and applies the Stoic precepts to daily life – it is appropriate that this text should be printed in so portable a form; a pocket reference work on dealing with life’s tribulations. For such a small text, by such a minor philosopher, the Enchiridion had a major impact. Popular amongst Christians and pagans alike, it was revived after its translation into Latin by Poliziano, published in 1497, and became exceptionally widely read. The Cebetis Tabula, often printed with the Enchiridion, is an exten … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

MERCATOR, Gerard
Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1616. unbound. Petrus Kaerius. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 14" x 19". Map of Mexico from the early 17th century at the height of the New World exploration when this area was considered New Spain. Describes the Western most part from Mazatlan down to Ixtapa. This map is beautifully decorated with ships and sea monsters. Markings in the shape of diamonds indicate silver mines. From the "Gerardi Mercatoris Atlas sive Cosmographicae" (Mercator-Hondius Atlas). Plate was originally made by Mercator and later added to by Hondius. Mercator (1512-1594) was an accomplished mathematician, cartographer, globe maker and engraver but is best known for the Mercator Projection. Incorporating the newly accepted fact that the world is round, Mercator was able to render longitude lines consistently straight on a chart. Although this requires some distortion, it was of great use for navigators, and is historically important, as it is still the most commonly used projection today.

Aelianus, Tacticus, active 2nd century ; Bingham, John
London: For Laurence Lisle.., 1616. First printing. Hardcover. Good. First edition, second issue with A2 a cancel. Small folio, old, possibly original dark brown leather, pp. (6), 159 (7), with engraved title page and 49 (of 50?) plates, many of which are folding. Good copy, front board neatly reattached with japanese paper inner hinge and dyed and sympathetic japanese paper over the outer joint. Looks pretty good. New flyleaves, front and rear. Title page and first pages show edgewear and minor marginal loss, otherwise the contents are very good. We have counted and recounted the plates and have come up with 49 each time. Other listings cite as few as 45 plates but most mention engraved title page plus 50 plates. The Da Capo reprint reports only 48 plates. So we are not entirely certain our copy is missing a plate but it is priced as if it was incomplete. Light scuffing to binding.

Pereyra, Antonio Pinto.
Coimbra, Nicolau Carvalho, 1616.. Small folio (198 x 275 mm). 2 parts in one vol. (24), 151, (9) pp. (6] pp., 1 blank f., 162 ff., (12) pp. Title within ornamental border and with a large woodcut armorial device; tail-pieces and decorative initials. Contemp. blindstamped brown full sheep, spine elaborately gilt. All edges red.. Very rare first edition of this early history of the Portuguese in India, including the Arabian peninsula (cf. p. 42: "os Arabios aguarnicao de Turcos, que nella estaua, & entregarem a cidade ao Xarife da lerra, filho do ultimo rey Arabio"; p. 52: "Mouros de carapuca vindos da costa de Arabia"; etc.). Portuguese expansion into the Indian Ocean began in the early 16th century following Vasco da Gama's explorations and led to numerous armed conflicts with the Ottoman Empire along the coast of the Arabian Gulf. Here, the Portuguese asserted their suzerainity for more than two centuries: only in 1750 did Nasir bin Murshid al-Yaribi, Imam of Oman, oust the Portuguese from Muscat, which Afonso de Albuquerque had conquered in 1507. - The book consists of two parts, each with an extensive index of names. It describes the history of the Portuguese viceroyalty in India during the age of the rule of Don Luis de Ataide, Count of Atouguia (1517-81), the 10th Vice-Roy of India (in 1568-71 and 1578-80). It was the time of the height of Portuguese naval power and of the prosperity of its East-Indian Viceroyalty, especially of Goa, which became the capital of the Viceroyalty in 1610. Rosenkreuzer, occulta, Rosicrucian, Geheimgesellschaften - (Grick, F. oder J. F. Jung?):
Frankfurt, Brinergus (Bringer), 1616.. 8°. 14 SS., 1 w. Bl. Broschur.

Daumer, Georg Friedrich, Religionsphilosoph, Lyriker (1800-1875).
O. O. u. D.. 1½ SS. Auf blauem Papier. 4to und 95 x 198 mm.. Betitelt "Über den Begriff des Märtyrerthums. Von G. Fr. Daumer". DIAZ MORENTE Pedro.
1616. Palau 72708 et. seq. Salvá 2243. Rico y Sinobas p.56. Cotarelo y Mori 745. ‘Nueva Arte’ was published in four parts, 1616-1631. The bibliography is still somewhat confused, as complete copies (if it were ever clear what that might be), would appear to be chimeras, surviving examples being ad-hoc collections of odd plates (The copy in Seville described in ‘Un tesoro en la Universidad de Sevilla’, Catálogo de exposición, 1993, no. 97, is one such; and Cotarelo stresses that, for his bibliographical descriptions, ‘ no hemos hallado dos ejemplares exactamente iguales’. CCBPE lists no copies of parts 1 & 2, although they seem to be present in the BNM). The eight separate engraved plates here offered are from the first, second and third parts. ALL HAVE A DECKLE EDGE WITH WIDE MARGINS, SHOWING THAT THEY WERE NEVER COLLECTED AND BOUND IN PUBLISHED VOLUMES. Plates in the first part were engraved by Adrian Boon and Francisco de Villafrañe from Morente's original calligraphic manuscripts. Although apparently unhappy with the rendering of these engravers, it is not clear whether Morante (or son), had extra skill enough to engrave the later plates themselves. These plates exhibit his innovative method of linking letters and words without lifting the pen (‘el trabado’), so as to increase fluency and rapidity in writing without losing clarity or elegance. But they go further by exuberantly illustrating how the same technique might be used as decoration in the most ornate baroque taste. 1. The superb engraved title plate to the suite of plates of the first part, 'Cotarelo II. p. 66, … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

First edition and a fine set bound in contemporary red morocco with the arms of Louis Boucherat (1616-99), Chancellor of France from 1685-99, succeeding Le Tellier and serving under Louis XIV. Régis (1632--1707), was one of the principal expositors of Cartesian natural philosophy and this is his most important book on the subject. After finishing his classical studies in La Salvetat de Blanquefort, near Agen, Régis came to Paris, and studied under Rohault at the Sorbonne. Régis became a warm admirer and partisan of the philosophy of Descartes. He was then sent by Rohault to spread the doctrine, teaching with great success the principles of Cartesianism at Toulouse (1665), Aigues-Mortes, Montpellier (1671), and in Nicolas Lemery's laboratory in Paris (1680). He was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1699. The present work presents the principles of Cartesian philosophy in a systematic way. Fine and handsome set. Bookplate of l'Abbé J.A. Prestel, Maria Katharina (geb. Höll 1747 Nürnberg - London 1794)
Ettling, Frankfurt a.M. (Nr. 9).
