Jesuit] Ricci, Matteo; Nicolas Trigault, editor
Augsburg Christoph Mang. First edition. Small 4to (20.5 x 16 cm), pp.[xii], 111, (110)-646 [but 648 as p.111-2 numbered twice], [8, index], [2, errata, colophon], with the engraved title by Wolfgang Kilian, incorporating Ricci's map of China flanked by portraits of the author and St Francis Xavier. A very good copy bound in modern quarter calf, marbled boards. All edges blue. Bound without the final blank leaf and the folding plan; faint blue stain to fore-edge of initial leaves. Contents otherwise clean and fresh. This eyewitness narrative of the Jesuit mission to Peking became the 'most influential description of China to appear during the first half of the seventeenth century. It includes a wealth of information about China in the chapters describing geography, people, laws, government, religion, learning, commerce and. provided European readers with more, better organized, and more accurate information about China than was ever before available' (Lach & Van Kley I pp.512–3). Its appearance 'took Europe by surprise. It reopened the door to China, which was first opened by Marco Polo, three centuries before, and then closed behind him by an incredulous public, who received the greater part of his fabulous narrative as the beguiling tales of a capricious traveller. [It] probably had more effect on the literary and scientific, the philosophical and the religious, phases of life in Europe than any other historical volume of the seventeenth century. It opened a new world' (Gallagher pp.xvii–xix). Matteo Ricci, the celebrated pioneer Jesuit missionary to China, died there in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jesuit] Trigault, Nicolas
Rome Bartolomeo Zannetti. First edition. Small 8vo (16.5 x 11 cm), pp. 263, [1, blank]. Bound in modern vellum. Light marginal browning, a faint stain on a few leaves, but a very good copy. First edition of detailed reports on Chinese affairs for 1610 and 1611, submitted to the head of the Society of Jesus in Rome by Nicolas Trigault, a Jesuit missionary recently returned from China. The first letter provides a description of the Chinese political situation, the state of the missions, and reports from Beijing and Nanjing; the second has a general report on the mission and a special report from Nanjing. Compiled after the death of Matteo Ricci, founder of the Jesuit mission in China, these reports 'stress the importance of keeping Peking as the centre of the Jesuit missionary effort in China, the need to respect Chinese ways of dealing with foreigners, the contrast between the peace and order in China and the turbulence in Japan, and the desirability of making China into an independent province of the Society and of sending more missionaries' (Lach & Van Kley I, p.372). Nicolas Trigault (1577-1628) was a Jesuit priest who followed in the footsteps of Matteo Ricci. He reached China in 1611 and remained there until 1613, when he returned to Europe with Ricci's journals, arriving at Rome in 1614. These letters were published as part of Trigault's efforts to bring the Jesuit work in China to the attention of Catholic Europe. Trigault edited and published Ricci's journals as De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas (1615). He returned to China in 1618 and died at Nanjing in 1628. Auv … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEPLER, JOHANNES
Linz: J. Plancus for the author, 1615. First edition. SCARCE FIRST EDITION of one of the most significant works in the prehistory of calculus. With the rare errata leaf present in two variant states. "The task of writing a complete treatise on volumetric determination seems to have been suggested to Kepler by the prosaic problem of determining the best proportions for a wine cask. The result was the Nova stereometria, which appeared in 1615. This contains three parts, of which the first is on Archimedean stereometry, together with a supplement containing some ninety-two solids not treated by Archimedes. The second part is on the measurement of Austrian wine barrels, and the third on applications of the whole" (Boyer, The History of the Calculus). Kepler's basic method was to regard the circle as a polygon with an infinite number of sides and its area as being composed of an infinite number of infinitesimal triangles with vertex at the centre of the circle and base one of the sides of the polygon. Similarly, the volume of a sphere was made up of an infinite number of pyramids, the cone and cylinder of infinitely thin circular discs or of infinitesimal wedge-shaped segments radiating from the axis. "Kepler then extended his work to solids not considered by the ancients. The areas of the segments cut from a circle by a chord he rotated about this chord, obtaining solids which he designated characteristically as apple or citron-shaped, according as the generating segment was greater or less than a semi-circle... Kepler's Doliometha... exerted such a strong influence in the infi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

SWETNAM, Joseph] and Willem CHRISTIAENS (translator).
1615. Very rare first edition in Dutch of The araignment of lewde, idle, forward, and unconstant women, a popular misogynistic pamphlet originally published in English in 1615. "Attacks on women (and defences of them) had been an established pamphlet genre for decades . and the Araignment owes its predecessors an immense (if unacknowledged) debt, for ideas and for whole sentences. What does distinguish the Araignment is the comprehensiveness of its attack on women, combined with an unprecedented level of vituperation . While others may adopt a tone of ironic sophistication, or jocular rib-nudging, this author lacks sufficient control over his own style to indicate when and if he is assuming a pose" (Butler). Although the book contains numerous arguments drawn from the Bible and classical antiquity, Swetnam (d. 1621), a fencing master, was no scholar and stated in the introduction that he wrote for "the ordinary sort of giddy headed young men". As his intended reader was either a bachelor or a newly-wed young man, most of Swetman's arguments are of an economic nature (mostly the spend-thrift wife) but he also discusses sexual promiscuity and nagging. Possibly due to its unscholarly nature, the pamphlet proved extremely popular and sparked numerous counter-pamphlets, some of them written by women. Swetnam's pamphlet even formed the inspiration for the comic play Swetnam the woman-hater arraigned by women (1620).Binding slightly rubbed and the spine damaged and cracked. With a small hole in the head margin of the pamphlet and some ink remains on the final blank page; a very go … [Click Below for Full Description]

Up for auction is an extremely rare handwritten illuminated vellum diploma presented to Jordanus de Jordanis of Milan? by the University of Bologna for obtaining a Doctorate of Canon and Civil Law degree. The diploma consists of 9 vellum leaves written in a fine Italic hand in Latin - names of the recipient, several Popes, witnesses, and members of the graduation commission are written in gold. The diploma is authenticated on the last page by a notary and by Carlo Bentivoglio (1615-1661), archdeacon of Bologna and member of the famous Bentivoglio family who ruled Bologna during the Renaissance as the Medici were ruling Florence. The diploma has been expertly rebound recently in handsome rustic goatskin leather. The leaves are in good condition and a single page measures approx. 9 x 6 1/4 inches. This diploma contains THREE original full-page hand-painted miniatures. The first depicts St. Dominic (depicted with his trademark stalk of lilies and book) raising his hands in benediction to the Virgin Mary and young Christ in heaven. St. Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, died in Bologna in 1221 - his tomb is also located there. Dominic settled in Bologna later in his life as he recognized the importance of that vibrant university city to his evangelizing mission. The second miniature depicts the coat of arms of two unidentified cardinals. The third miniature depicts the coat of arms of the recipient of the diploma. Floral decorations fill up much of the first page of text. The diploma was written and painted in Bologna at the time of (or immediately after) the granting of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scamozzi, Vincenzo
Venezia, presso l’Autore, 1615, Edizione originale. Ottimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

FUCHS (Samuel)

( Salomon Certon ).
Paris, Hameau. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

GUEVARA, Antonio de.
STCN (1 copy); not in Bibl. Belg.; Simoni. Very rare edition of Guevara's extremely popular and partly fictional biography of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180), which made the emperor a paragon of virtue and a popular subject in art and literature. Guevara claimed to have discovered an ancient manuscript containing twenty letters written by Marcus Aurelius, publishing them in the second half of his book, but in fact he invented them and used them as a didactic and literary device. This imaginative fictional basis for his biography no doubt resulted in a much more popular book than any true story could have, for it spoke to his contemporaries and provided a model for a wise ruler. With 2 owner's inscriptions on title-page. Some occasional browning and a small tear and hole in title-page, otherwise in very good condition.

PSELLUS Michael
1615. 8vo (170 x 110mm.) [16], 153, [7]p., contemporary vellum lettered in ink on spine Paris: J. Drouart, A fine copy of the editio princeps. In this work Psellus vividly describes demons in an almost modern sense: ?these animals exist in our own life which is full of passions, for they are present abundantly in the passions, and their dwelling place is that of matter, as is their rank and degree. For this reason they are also subject to passions and fettered to them? The work was written in the 11th century, but his ideas reached a new audience in 1608 when Francesco Maria Guazzo copied Psellus' classification of demons in his Compendium Maleficarum (1608). In this classification, demons are divided into six classes: 1) Demons of the superior layers of the air, which never establish a relation with people. 2) Demons of the inferior layers of the air which are responsible for storms. 3) Demons of the earth, dwelling in fields, caves and forests. 4) Demons of water, which are female and detroy aquatic animals. 5) Demons below the earth, responsible for keeping hidden treasures causing earthquakes and crumbling of houses. 6) Demons of the night, which are black and evil and which avoid daylight. The work is edited by Gilbert Gaulmin (1585-1615), dramatist and editor of several editions of Greek texts in the early 17th century; he is notorious for having entered into a common-law marriage which became known as ?mariage à la Gaulmine?.Caillet 9010. SLICHTENHORST, Arend van.
Bodel Nijenhuis 582; Gouda Quint, Bibliogr. Gelderland, p. 8; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 281. First edition of the first complete history of Gelderland in Dutch, by Arend van Slichtenhorst (ca. 1615-1657), who studied at Leiden and became a lawyer in his native city Arnhem. The work was based upon, and partly a translation of Pontanus' Historiae Gelricae, but Slichtenhorst thoroughly revised, corrected and much enlarged the Latin original. Slichtenhorst starts with the topography and cities of the region, continuing with Gelderland during the reign of Julius Caesar up to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The large folding map, by no one less than Willem Jansz. Blaeu, gives an overview of the entire province, while four double-page maps render parts of the province in greater detail. With presentation inscription dated 1823, and an owner's inscription dated 1694. Some words and sentences struck through, rending them unreadable. Tear on p. 1, repaired with tape, some of the folding plates reinforced with tape as well. Some waterstains throughout the text and some plates are heavily browned. Binding rebacked, as noted. Otherwise a good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

MAXIMUS, Valerius
1615 Valerius Maximus Dictorum Factorum ROME Famous ARMORIAL Provenance Binding A rare printing of Valerius’s “Dictorum et Factorum” or Historical Anecdotes. This work is a collection of short stories, sayings, and phrases, memorial to Tiberius Caesar, who was reigning during Valerius’ lifetime. These anecdotes depict ancient Greek life and philosophy as well as famous kings and Caesars. Many modern historians claim that Valerius’s work was taken from Cicero, Livy, and Sallust, as well as other ancient historians and philosophers, rather than creating original works. However, many of the topics he writes about were controversial and unusual for the time – he wrote on homosexuality within the Roman army and the aristocracy of ancient Greece. While homosexually itself was written on, it was only considered tolerable in a ‘master-slave’ relationship; not within a public and high status sense. Other topics include omens, revenge, superstitious cults, women lawyers, modesty, crimes, and conflicting political views. Notable names mentioned in this famous work include Scipio Africanus, Gaius and Tiberius Gracchus, and Alexander the Great! This 1615 edition was published in Rouen by the Jesuit order of Jacob Beauvais; however, this edition is unique in that it features the royal arms of Charles d’Albert, Duke of Lunes, a patron of the Jesuit College in Rouen. MARINO, Gimbattista Giovan Battista
appresso Giovanni Battista Ciotti, Venezia, 1615. 16vo, (14), 100, (6 ), pp 2 blanc, text in Italian, with pictorial engraved title, woodcut initial, Bound in full contemporary vellum, inked title on spine, occasional ligth foxing but very good copy. Marino's going to Paris, prepared by many signs of pro-French predisposition, particularly widespread in the Lira, took place at the beginning of 1615. Having arrived with the English ambassador, in Lyon, on May 15, Marino dedicated the temple, Panegyric to the Christian majesty of Maria de 'Medici, queen of France, and of Navarre, to «Madama la Maresciala d'Ancra», the Florentine Leonora Dori Galigai, wife of Concino Concini, who went shortly afterwards to print in the same city. The panegyric consists of 297 sestines: after the pictorial one to the duke of Savoy, this time the content is architectural. The title recalls the homonymous collective collective collections flourished in the sixteenth century, but now the temple is erected by a single poet and with very high intentions. It is a succession of three ecrases surrounded by two descriptions: first the building is described, then on the golden doors the story of Henry IV is engraved, including his contrasts with "of Savoy the proud sire", on the frieze that of the Medici dynasty, on the mosaics of the internal walls the story of Maria, with space reserved for the future of her son Luigi; in the center of the temple, corresponding to the enclosure of the panegyric, stands the altar with the portrait of the queen. Schliessbändern (3 v. 4 fehlen)., Deckel felckig u. m. kleinen Fehlstellen, Innen 20 Bl mit leichtem Wasserrand, min. stockfleckig. - Frühe Ausgaben sind sehr selten!Zuerst 1614 in Ingolstadt gedrucktes, dann vielfach aufgelegtes Werk. SAUTERIUS, DANIEL. [SAUTER]. - [VERY RARE EARLY WORK ON BANKRUPTCY]
Lugduni [Leiden], Basson, 1615. Small 8vo. In contemporary limp vellum with ink titling to spine in contemporary hand. Traces after a small paper label to lower part of spine. Small paper label pasted on to top left corner of pasted down front free end paper. A very fine and well preserved copy. 5, (7), 94, (1) pp. ¶ The exceedingly scarce first edition of Sauter's seminal work constituting one of the very earliest treatises on bankruptcy, preceeding Thomas Goodinge's "The law against the bankrupts" (1695) - regarded as being the first work in English on the subject - by more than half a century. The work became an immediate success, a second edition was published the same year, and translations into the vernaculars soon followed. This testifies to the appetite in contemporary Europe for a work that tackled the phenomenon of bankruptcy from an economic, juridical, and moral perspective. Sauter here describes that bankruptcy is a phenomenon on the rise and that the primary cause of this is negligent accounting, fraud and deception as the most frequent causes. His position was that the integrity of contracts would then be considered the ultimate foundation of civil society and public order: "[F]idelity in performance of Covenants and Promises is one main foundation of a well ordered Commonwealth. [...] If Bankrupts the Arch-builders of fraud, utterly subvert and take this away, as indeed they do, who doubteth but that the Commonwealth, unlesse prevention be in time used, will shortly be ruinated? [...] If the Bankrupts weaken and violate performance of fidelity [...] the Comm … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEAUFORT (Jean de).
1615 1Sans lieu, 1615.
