FELINI, Pietro Martire (1565-1613). -
Roma, Zanetti, 1615. In-8 picc. Cartonatura posteriore, tassello sul dorso. 234 silografie n.t.: chiese, antichità, monumenti ecc. Fossati Bellani 688. Schudt 175. Rossetti G-594.

SAUTERIUS, DANIEL. [SAUTER]. - [VERY RARE EARLY WORK ON BANKRUPTCY]
Lugduni [Leiden], Basson, 1615. Small 8vo. In contemporary limp vellum with ink titling to spine in contemporary hand. Traces after a small paper label to lower part of spine. Small paper label pasted on to top left corner of pasted down front free end paper. A very fine and well preserved copy. 5, (7), 94, (1) pp. ¶ The exceedingly scarce first edition of Sauter's seminal work constituting one of the very earliest treatises on bankruptcy, preceeding Thomas Goodinge's "The law against the bankrupts" (1695) - regarded as being the first work in English on the subject - by more than half a century. The work became an immediate success, a second edition was published the same year, and translations into the vernaculars soon followed. This testifies to the appetite in contemporary Europe for a work that tackled the phenomenon of bankruptcy from an economic, juridical, and moral perspective. Sauter here describes that bankruptcy is a phenomenon on the rise and that the primary cause of this is negligent accounting, fraud and deception as the most frequent causes. His position was that the integrity of contracts would then be considered the ultimate foundation of civil society and public order: "[F]idelity in performance of Covenants and Promises is one main foundation of a well ordered Commonwealth. [...] If Bankrupts the Arch-builders of fraud, utterly subvert and take this away, as indeed they do, who doubteth but that the Commonwealth, unlesse prevention be in time used, will shortly be ruinated? [...] If the Bankrupts weaken and violate performance of fidelity [...] the Com … [Click Below for Full Description]

SUÁREZ DE FIGUEROA, Christóval (1571-1644)
Madrid: Por Luis Sanchez, 1615. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 4to (184 x140mm). [8], 388pp., (includes Index). Engraved heraldic printer’s device to title-page. Contemporary dark sheep; (lacking folios 40 through 51, but supplied in 18th century manuscript, marginal worming and stains, title-page torn and mounted, final two digits of date supplied in facsimile to title, and with lower margin of title cropped with loss of imprint data, abraded and a bit worn). Sold as is. Suárez de Figueroa was a prominent writer and linguist living during the Spanish Golden Age. He had a wide knowledge of different trades and disciplines which included history, mythology and science. His most noted work was this collaboration, which became a European “bestseller” of the 17th century and was published in Italian and Latin. First published in 1615, the famous encyclopedic work, "Plaza vniversal de todas ciencias y artes," on various subjects, professions or trades was published 25 years earlier in Italian by Garzoni Tomaso, under the title "La piazza universale di tutte le professioni of mondo." This work remains an important source of information on the status of various disciplines at the initial stages of the scientific revolution. It also made Suárez de Figueroa one of the greatest 16th-century Italian authors who was also most translated abroad. Suárez de Figueroa not only did a brilliant version of the Plaza vniversal, which was full of technical language, but one that was innovative. He adapted the text to his time and country and included some cultural backgro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scamozzi, Vincenzo
presso l'Autore. [Click Below for Full Description]

Venice: Giorgio Valentino, 1615. First Edition. Scamozzi's L'Idea della architettura was called the "bulkiest architectural treatise written in Italy" (Wittkower) and next to the Quattro Libri of his teacher Palladio, it was the most influential architectural work of the first part of the seventeenth century. The publication of L'Idea was paid for by Scamozzi himself and is a lavish, beautifully printed book. The text and marginal notes are printed in a roman typeface, the numerous inserted Latin quotations are printed in italic. Each chapter begins with a historiated initial. All of the plates and most of the woodcuts are signed by Scamozzi. King Louis XII of France (reigned 1498 to 1515) was a popular monarch, called "the Father of the People" as the title page of this book indicates. Other writers helped out, as indicated by their occasional names in the margins.

VANINI, Lucilio (Giulio Cesare, 1585-1619). -
Lyon, de Harsy, 1615. In-8. Pergamena antica impressa a secco su assicelle di legno, dorso anticamente rifatto (remboîtage). (24), 336, (8) pp.; lieve e uniforme arrossatura della carta. Rara edizione originale. Rare first edition of this work in which the Italian philosopher professes «to set divine magic, Christian phyiscs, and Catholic astrology over against the ancient philosophers, atheists, Epicureans, Peripatetics, and Stoics...» (Thorndike VI, 568-573). Old blind-stamped vellum over wooden boards, spine repaired (remboîtage); mild uniform toning of the paper.

Archimedes
Paris: Apud Claude Morel, 1615. The complete works of Archimedes, the first edition edited by David Rivault. Folio, bound in full calf, title page in red and black. With 551 woodcut illustrations in text, large printer's device on title. This work contains the Greek text with a Latin translation alongside and has extensive explanatory notes. Brunet considered this one of the two finest editions of Archimedes, the founder of hydrostatics and theoretical mechanics. Brunet I 384; Graesse I 180. In excellent condition with light toning to the text. "Together with Newton and Gauss, Archimedes is generally regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians the world has ever known, and if his influence had not been overshadowed at first by Aristotle, Euclid and Plato, the progress of modern mathematics might have been much faster. As it was, his influence began to take full effect only after the publication of this first printed edition which enabled Descartes, Galileo and Newton in particular to build on what he had begun" (Printing and the Mind of Man). He anticipated modern calculus and analysis by applying concepts of infinitesimals and the method of exhaustion to derive and rigorously prove a range of geometrical theorems, including the area of a circle, the surface area and volume of a sphere, and the area under a parabola. Other mathematical achievements include deriving an accurate approximation of pi, defining and investigating the spiral bearing his name, and creating a system using exponentiation for expressing very large numbers. He was also one of the first to apply mat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Scamozzi, Vincenzo
Venezia, presso l’Autore, 1615, Edizione originale. Ottimo esemplare. [Click Below for Full Description]

BIBLE; English; Geneva version.)
London: Robert Barker, , 1615. [Together with:] SPEED, John. The Genealogies recorded in the Sacred Scriptures, according to every Family and Tribe. Quarto in eights (208 x 154 mm). Later 17th-century black morocco, decorative gilt spine, 18th-century red morocco label, roll-tool border on sides enclosing gilt roll tool panels and crowned corner ornaments, marbled endpapers. Engraved title pages, double-page map of the Holy Land (in the Genealogies), other wood-engravings in the text. Binding a little rubbed, some headlines shaved by the binder, a few neat old repairs, tear across fore-corner of Qq8 (with loss of some words), repair to margin of 3E6 (with loss of side note), a few faint burn marks in same gathering (doubtless from the proximity of a candle), but overall in very good condition and complete with title pages and the blank leaf A1. A most attractive Jacobean Bible in the Geneva version, the version still used by Oliver Cromwell in the middle of the 17th century. Herbert describes this 1615 printing as "the last roman type quarto edition of this version printed by Barker".
