Virgil; Giovanni Fabrini; Carlo Maletesta; Filippo Venuti
ont> Appresso i Sessa: Venetia, 1615. Book. A very scarce collection of Virgil's works. Being the Eclogues, Georgics and his epic, Aeneid. With extensive notes in the vernacular Tuscan language and the original text presented in Vulgar Latin. A very scarce edition of Virgil's poems, particularly in such a well preserved condition. Virgil was an ancient Roman poet of Mantua. His Eclogues, Georgics and Aeneid are three of the most famous poems in Latin literature and his reputation holds him as one of the greatest poets that came from Rome's literary prowess. This work is a useful example of Vulgar Latin or colloquial Latin. With commentary and editorial notes by Giovanni Francesco Fabrini, Carlo Malatesta and Filippo Venuti. All were Italian grammarians and linguists. Fabrini began his studies in Florence before moving to Rome. He wrote a work on the Latin language called 'The Treaty of Interpretation of the Latin Language by way of Tuscany'. Venuti was known for his compilation of a Vulgar Latin dictionary. He met Fabrini in Tuscany and they formed a partnership whereby they vulgarized classical texts. Their translations of the Aeneid was first published in 1575 and their Bucolics and Georgics were also issued separately before being compiled together for this work, which features Carlo Malatesta's commentary. With occasional woodcuts to pages. Leaf Z1 is mispaginated at 184 when it is actually 177. A fascinating Vulgar Latin translation of Virgil's works with an extensive commentary, and well preserved in a seventeenth century binding. Condition: In a contemporary limp vel … [Click Below for Full Description]

He sailed from Macau on February 9, 1613, and arrived to Rome on October 11, 1614, by the way of India, Persian Gulf, and Egypt. His tasks involved reporting on the mission's progress to Pope Paul V, successfully negotiating with the Jesuit Order's General Claudio Acquaviva the independence of the China Mission from the Japan Misson, and traveling around Europe to … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEPLER, Johannes (1571-1630)
Linz, Johann Planck, 1615. Folio (310 x 200 mm), I: ff [56], with additional errata leaf at end, with numerous woodcut illustrations in the text; the large woodcut on H4 verso just touching lower margin but not cropped as often, a fine, large, and crisp copy in contemporary vellum, spine darkened and a small area of vellum torn away on lower front cover.First edition, an outstanding and exceptionally large copy with a distinguished provenance, of Kepler's contribution to the mathematics of integration techniques. This is one of very few copies with the rare errata leaf. It also appears to be printed on a superior paper stock than normally found. The Nova stereometria of one of Kepler's rarer works, containing his invention of integration techniques, an important precursor of the calculus, and the mathematical tools which made his immense astronomical calculations feasible. Interestingly, these arose from his need to calculate how much wine was left in the barrels of his cellar in order not to run short in winter. The Nova Stereometria is 'generally regarded as one of the significant works in the prehistory of the calculus' (DSB). Kepler 'made wide application of an old but neglected idea, that of infinitely great and infinitely small quantities. Greek mathematicians usually shunned this notion, but with it modern mathematicians completely revolutionized the science' (Cajori).'Desiring to outfit his new household with the produce of a particularly good wine harvest, Kepler installed some casks in his house. When he discovered that the wine merchant measured only the diagonal … [Click Below for Full Description]

GALILEI, Galileo (1564-1642)], Georg GALGEMAIR (1564-1619) and Georg BRENTEL the younger (1581-1634)
Ulm, Johann Meder, 1615. 4to (190 x 149 mm), pp [viii] 130 [recte 132] [2], title within woodcut cartouche with putti with mathematical instruments, one large folding engraved plate (380 x 254 mm) of the Galilean compass and folding woodcut plate of the proportional compass, with numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text; a fine, crisp copy in contemporary vellum with paper title label on upper cover.First edition of this exceedingly rare account of the Galilean compass, an important text in the history of the early dissemination of Galileo's revolutionary instrument. This work consists of two parts. The first part comprises a German paraphrase of Galileo's Le operazioni del Compasso Geometrico et Militare (Padua 1606), Galileo's own privately printed account of the use of the instrument. This was probably based on Mathias Bernegger's 1613 Latin translation. To this text Galgemair added instructions on constructing the instrument 'as improved and augmented by Georg Galgemair' and a fine, full-size engraving showing both sides of the instrument. Galileo had intentionally omitted both, as he didn't want his instrument plagiarised. Galgemair also included a number of demonstrations on the use of the compass aren't derived from Galileo. Neither Galileo, nor the other early writers on the Galilean compass such as Faulhaber, are mentioned in the text, and the work has escaped Galileo's bibliographers. The second part of the work is a reprint of Galgemair's 1610 work on the proportional compass (a much different instrument), itself largely a reprint of Hulsius' 1604 w … [Click Below for Full Description]

PAGANO, Valerio (attrib.)
[ms.], 1615. Near Fine. PAGANO VALERIO (Attrib.): Storia di Suor Giulia di Marco [MANUSCRIPT] 8vo., contemporary full vellum, ff. [1 blank, 63ff (writing on recto only of last leaf), + 45 blank]. Undated [probably c. 1615]. Very minor bumping to head and heel, minimal worming to rear hinge, not affecting text block, otherwise a clean copy, with ink still well-defined. A manuscript of immense historic significance for the history of the Catholic Church in Europe at the time of the Counter-Reformation, it relates the story of Giulia de Marco (1574/75-?), a self-proclaimed living saint from the southern Italian province of Molise who by claim of her divine revelations beguiled the citizens of Naples, a conceit that led to public uproar and much controversy and intrigue among all classes of society, lay and clergy, popolo and elite, in Naples and in Rome. She purported to have received visions from God, who told her that he had forgiven her sins and gave her assurance that she would be saved. For reasons along these lines God gave her freedom of conscience, told her that the seats in Paradise needed filling, and for the purpose of filling them permitted her to have carnal relations with whomever and how many persons she wished. The case of Suor Giulia was, in the words of historian Anne Jacobson Schutte, "by far the most complex instance of pretense of holiness in Naples . . . the bizarre amalgam of spirituality and sexual libertinism." For about ten years, a kind of sexual cult thrived around Suor Giulia, to whom both men and women of the Neapolitan nobility appealed for sexua … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bardi, Giovanni de').
Florence, appresso Cosimo Giunti, 1615. 4to. 48 pp. With armorial woodcut and folding engraved plate. Contemporary limp vellum with ms. title to spine. The earliest treatise - and only early monograph - on the historical precursor to the modern game of football (or soccer), namely the game of "Calcio" traditionally played by young men in Florence's Piazza Santa Croce during the Carnival season. The book explains the mechanics of the game, provides its historical background, and describes actual games played in and around Florence in the recent past. The detailed account was first published in 1580 and reprinted in 1615, unchanged save for a new dedication and preface by the printer, Cosimo Giunti, who also reveals the author's name as Giovanni de' Bardi, Conte di Vernio. The engraving shows a fine view of the Piazza with the players on the field immediately before kick-off. The title page shows the Medici arms: the book is dedicated to Archduchess Maria Maddalena of Austria, Grand Duchess of Tuscany as wife of Cosimo II de' Medici. Melzi II, 388. Moreni I, 84. SLICHTENHORST, Arend van.
Bodel Nijenhuis 582; Gouda Quint, Bibliogr. Gelderland, p. 8; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 281. First edition of the first complete history of Gelderland in Dutch, by Arend van Slichtenhorst (ca. 1615-1657), who studied at Leiden and became a lawyer in his native city Arnhem. The work was based upon, and partly a translation of Pontanus' Historiae Gelricae, but Slichtenhorst thoroughly revised, corrected and much enlarged the Latin original. Slichtenhorst starts with the topography and cities of the region, continuing with Gelderland during the reign of Julius Caesar up to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The large folding map, by no one less than Willem Jansz. Blaeu, gives an overview of the entire province, while four double-page maps render parts of the province in greater detail. With presentation inscription dated 1823, and an owner's inscription dated 1694. Some words and sentences struck through, rending them unreadable. Tear on p. 1, repaired with tape, some of the folding plates reinforced with tape as well. Some waterstains throughout the text and some plates are heavily browned. Binding rebacked, as noted. Otherwise a good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

FUCHS (Samuel)‎
Papier uniformément at … [Click Below for Full Description]

Title-page woodcut after Durer's Dance of Death series. II: [22] (of 24, lacking title-page with author's portrait on verso), 270 pp. III: [2], 128 pp. Some plates with old repairs. Bound in contemporary polished Dutch vellum, yapp edges (textblock detached from vellum casing at end), spine lettered in early MS. All first editions. Our copy is distinguished by having the spectacular folding Theatrum Anatomicum plate, engraved by Andries Jacobsz Stock after a painting by Jacob de Ghein, not present in all copies. This celebrated illustration depicts an anatomical demonstration by Paaw surrounded by two dogs and ca. 50 men: knights, savants, peasants, and burghers, who can be differentiated by their clothes. Above all stands a skeleton holding a banner which bears this inscription: Mors ultima linea rerum. The illustration was based on that which appears in Vesalius' Fabrica (Paaw was a great champion of Vesalius and published his own edition of the Epitome in 1616). Ad 1: "First fruits of the anatomy of human bones," Paaw's principle work, ILLUSTRATED WITH 25 FINE ENGRAVINGS in the text. In this work appear several important discoveries in Craniology and Osteology. Jesuit] Ricci, Matteo; Nicolas Trigault, editor
Augsburg Christoph Mang. First edition. Small 4to (20.5 x 16 cm), pp.[xii], 111, (110)-646 [but 648 as p.111-2 numbered twice], [8, index], [2, errata, colophon], with the engraved title by Wolfgang Kilian, incorporating Ricci's map of China flanked by portraits of the author and St Francis Xavier. A very good copy bound in modern quarter calf, marbled boards. All edges blue. Bound without the final blank leaf and the folding plan; faint blue stain to fore-edge of initial leaves. Contents otherwise clean and fresh. This eyewitness narrative of the Jesuit mission to Peking became the 'most influential description of China to appear during the first half of the seventeenth century. It includes a wealth of information about China in the chapters describing geography, people, laws, government, religion, learning, commerce and. provided European readers with more, better organized, and more accurate information about China than was ever before available' (Lach & Van Kley I pp.512–3). Its appearance 'took Europe by surprise. It reopened the door to China, which was first opened by Marco Polo, three centuries before, and then closed behind him by an incredulous public, who received the greater part of his fabulous narrative as the beguiling tales of a capricious traveller. [It] probably had more effect on the literary and scientific, the philosophical and the religious, phases of life in Europe than any other historical volume of the seventeenth century. It opened a new world' (Gallagher pp.xvii–xix). Matteo Ricci, the celebrated pioneer Jesuit missionary to China, died there in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jesuit] Trigault, Nicolas
Rome Bartolomeo Zannetti. First edition. Small 8vo (16.5 x 11 cm), pp. 263, [1, blank]. Bound in modern vellum. Light marginal browning, a faint stain on a few leaves, but a very good copy. First edition of detailed reports on Chinese affairs for 1610 and 1611, submitted to the head of the Society of Jesus in Rome by Nicolas Trigault, a Jesuit missionary recently returned from China. The first letter provides a description of the Chinese political situation, the state of the missions, and reports from Beijing and Nanjing; the second has a general report on the mission and a special report from Nanjing. Compiled after the death of Matteo Ricci, founder of the Jesuit mission in China, these reports 'stress the importance of keeping Peking as the centre of the Jesuit missionary effort in China, the need to respect Chinese ways of dealing with foreigners, the contrast between the peace and order in China and the turbulence in Japan, and the desirability of making China into an independent province of the Society and of sending more missionaries' (Lach & Van Kley I, p.372). Nicolas Trigault (1577-1628) was a Jesuit priest who followed in the footsteps of Matteo Ricci. He reached China in 1611 and remained there until 1613, when he returned to Europe with Ricci's journals, arriving at Rome in 1614. These letters were published as part of Trigault's efforts to bring the Jesuit work in China to the attention of Catholic Europe. Trigault edited and published Ricci's journals as De Christiana expeditione apud Sinas (1615). He returned to China in 1618 and died at Nanjing in 1628. Auv … [Click Below for Full Description]

KEPLER, JOHANNES
Linz: J. Plancus for the author, 1615. First edition. SCARCE FIRST EDITION of one of the most significant works in the prehistory of calculus. With the rare errata leaf present in two variant states. "The task of writing a complete treatise on volumetric determination seems to have been suggested to Kepler by the prosaic problem of determining the best proportions for a wine cask. The result was the Nova stereometria, which appeared in 1615. This contains three parts, of which the first is on Archimedean stereometry, together with a supplement containing some ninety-two solids not treated by Archimedes. The second part is on the measurement of Austrian wine barrels, and the third on applications of the whole" (Boyer, The History of the Calculus). Kepler's basic method was to regard the circle as a polygon with an infinite number of sides and its area as being composed of an infinite number of infinitesimal triangles with vertex at the centre of the circle and base one of the sides of the polygon. Similarly, the volume of a sphere was made up of an infinite number of pyramids, the cone and cylinder of infinitely thin circular discs or of infinitesimal wedge-shaped segments radiating from the axis. "Kepler then extended his work to solids not considered by the ancients. The areas of the segments cut from a circle by a chord he rotated about this chord, obtaining solids which he designated characteristically as apple or citron-shaped, according as the generating segment was greater or less than a semi-circle... Kepler's Doliometha... exerted such a strong influence in the infi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]
