'L'Amphitheatrum' constitue un document inestimable" (A. Levi, in: 'Encyclopedia Universalis'). Losa, Francisco
Early missionary work in New Spain. 1615. Lisbon. Pedro Crasbeeck. In 8vo (135 mm x 90 mm). 1 [blank] + 8 ff. 107 + 1 ff., missing two leaves at the beginning, text complete. Old vellum, soiled. Damp stained, some fraying to first and last leaves, early inscriptions on endpapers. Second edition –published two years after the first, printed in 1613 in Mexico. This is the first obtainable edition, the first being virtually impossible to find. Lopez (1542 – 1596) was a Spanish missionary and something of a mystery; he travelled to Mexico in 1562, making port at Veracruz at the age of twenty. Shortly after arriving, he left for Mexico City, where he worked for a while before completing his plans to travel to the Zacatecas region and live amongst the Chichimecos Indians. He became a hermit and spent his life amongst Mexican natives in different regions, under suspicion of heresy, apparently not attending Masses and religious services. Overall, Lopez’ experiences become one of the earliest accounts of missionary work in New Spain. Little is known, and much is speculated regarding his early life in Spain, some saying he was a member of the nobility, “one of the most successful of the many early missionaries among the Indians, of New Spain, was born at Madrid, July 4th 1542, and is said to have been an illegitimate son of Charles V. or Philip II. At the age of twenty he landed at Vera Cruz, and soon after pitched his tent alone among the Chichimecos Indians. He died on the 20th of July, 1596, at Santa Fé, six miles from Mexico city, where he had been visited in his hermitage by all … [Click Below for Full Description]

CEULEN, Ludolph van.
First edition of this rare work, containing the best approximation to the value of π achieved at that time.<br/><br/> "Van Ceulen was an indefatigable computer and concentrated on the computation of π sometimes called Ludolph's number ... He became acquainted with Archimedes' <i>The measurement of the circle</i> ... Van Ceulen began to work in the spirit of Archimedes, computing the sides of more regular polygons inscribed within and circumscribed about a circle than Archimedes had and inventing a special short division for such computation ... In his <i>Arithmetische en Geometrische fondamenten</i> (1615), published by his widow, he reached thirty-three decimal places, always enclosing π between an upper and a lower limit" (DSB). <br/><br/> Originally from Germany, Ceulen (1540-1610) spent most of his life in Holland and was one of the most important Dutch mathematicians of his time. His work on the calculation of π shows him to have been "as expert in trigonometry as his contemporary Viète. In 1595 the two men competed in the solution of a forty-fifth degree equation proposed by Van Roomen in his <i>Ideae mathematicae</i> (1593) and recognized its relation to the expression of sin 45<i>A</i> in terms of sin <i>A</i>" (<i>ibid</i>.). Van Ceulen's influence continued through his pupil Willebrord Snel. "In his <i>Cyclometricus</i> (1621), [Snel] published Van Ceulen's final triumph: π to thirty-five decimal places. This was inscribed on his tombstone in the Pieterskerk in Leiden" (<i>ibid</i>.)." Snel published a Latin translation of the present work in 1615, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Losa, Francisco
1615 - Early missionary work in New Spain. 1615. He died on the 20th of July, 1596, at Santa Fé, six miles from Mexico city, where he had been visi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
