As a result, this work is a more advanced study of fifteenth century England than any others that had appeared beforehand. This work was first published in 1565 under the title 'Summarie of Englyshe Chronicles', and was re-issued and undapted continually until 1631. Hendrick GOLTZIUS (Mulbrecht 1559 - Haarlem 1617)
H Goltzius in debiti officij, atque amoris testimonium D.D." '3. Mittel: Coniunction'(Conjunction.) The third plate concerns the stage of alchemical conjunction, which also covers the stages of Putrefaction, Solution, Desolution and Resolution, also Digestion and Circulation. The curious arched zodiac (the twelve figures of which do not follow the traditional order) is related to the twelve processes of the art, the correspondences being announced (perhaps, rather, hidden) by associate sigils. The interior of the mountain is revealed in the form of a rich palace, on the roof of which a phoenix bird stretches its wings. The rabbit being urged into the hole at the foot of the mountain is a reference to the well-known alchemical acrostic VITRIOL [Visita Interiora Terrae Rectificandoque Invenies Occultum Lapidem] which translates "Visit the Interior of the Earth, and by rectification you will find the hidden stone". The personifications of the seven plants, on the mountain ledges, are linked with the seven steps, or stages, of the alchemical processes, from Calcination to Tincturation, leading to the interior palace. In sequence, from bottom left, the planets are identified as Venus, Mars, Sun, Mercury (dancing on top of the mountain, with caduceus in one hand, a six-pointed star in the other), Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. BALDERIC, Bishop of Noyon and Tournai (ed. George COLVENEER).
[40], “607” [= 623], [1 blank], [16] pp.Rare first edition, in the original Latin, of a mediaeval chronicle of Cambrai and Arras, written ca. 1100 and containing the earliest known description and representation of a "virtuous" dice and board game invented ca. 965 by Wibold, Archdeacon of Noyon, named Bishop of Cambrai shortly before his death, along with a simplified version where the virtue is chosen by a spinning pointer instead of dice. Wibold's game, called "Ludus regularis seu clericalis", is described in detail in a 12-page chapter (pp. 142-153) of the chronicle itself, with extensive notes in a 13-page commentary (pp. 460-472) where the three folding game boards are also inserted. The two rectangular boards are very similar, with rectangular spaces representing 56 virtues arranged along the edges of the rectangle. The goal is to acquire as many virtues as possible. Some virtues are easier to obtain than others. The Mediaeval church often regarded dice games as tools of the devil, and Wibold developed this virtuous alternative to turn the dangerous tool to good work. The chronicle itself is an important source for the history of Cambrai and Arras, beginning with the Roman Empire under Julius Ceasar and the Franks under Clovis, and continuing to about 1090. Its greatest value lies in its last centuries, where it provides many details not found in other sources. With two owner's inscriptions and a bookplate. With a few small tears in the folding game boards and a faint water stain in one letterpress game board and some text leaves, but still in good condition. The bindi … [Click Below for Full Description]

[CAMILLI, Camillo (translator)].
Rare first and only(?) edition of the Italian translation of the first (and only published?) part of a chivalric romance, generally known as the Félix Magno, translated by Camillo Camilli (d. 1615). The original Spanish was first published in four parts at Barcelona by Carlos Amorós in 1531 entitled Los cuatro libros del valerosisimo caballero Félix Magno. The romance deals with the life and history of Félix Magno, the son of King Falángriz of Great Britain and Queen Clarinea, on a quest for glory. A large part of the work is dedicated to struggles with Moors and Turks. Like most chivalric novels, it was heavily influenced by stories of King Arthur and similar romances like Amadis de Gaule. Our copy contains only the first part (with the running title Fatti di Felicemagno - parte prima through the whole work), and it appears the other parts were not published in translation at all. Lacking the final leaf containing only the colophon and its blank verso. With two owner's entries on paste-down. Small marginal hole on the title-page and following 3 leaves, very slightly browned with some occasional minor foxing. Binding with a few holes and the foot of the back board slightly damaged. Overall in good condition.BMC STC Italian, p. 245; Palau 87526; USTC 806217 (8 copies); not in WorldCat.

[SWETNAM, Joseph] and Willem CHRISTIAENS (translator).
Butler, "Introduction" in: Female-replies to Swetnam the woman-hater; STCN (2 copies); WorldCat (3 copies). Very rare first edition in Dutch of The araignment of lewde, idle, forward, and unconstant women, a popular misogynistic pamphlet originally published in English in 1615. "Attacks on women (and defences of them) had been an established pamphlet genre for decades ... and the Araignment owes its predecessors an immense (if unacknowledged) debt, for ideas and for whole sentences. What does distinguish the Araignment is the comprehensiveness of its attack on women, combined with an unprecedented level of vituperation ... While others may adopt a tone of ironic sophistication, or jocular rib-nudging, this author lacks sufficient control over his own style to indicate when and if he is assuming a pose" (Butler). Although the book contains numerous arguments drawn from the Bible and classical antiquity, Swetnam (d. 1621), a fencing master, was no scholar and stated in the introduction that he wrote for "the ordinary sort of giddy headed young men". As his intended reader was either a bachelor or a newly-wed young man, most of Swetman's arguments are of an economic nature (mostly the spend-thrift wife) but he also discusses sexual promiscuity and nagging. Possibly due to its unscholarly nature, the pamphlet proved extremely popular and sparked numerous counter-pamphlets, some of them written by women. Swetnam's pamphlet even formed the inspiration for the comic play Swetnam the woman-hater arraigned by women (1620).Binding slightly rubbed and the spine damaged and cracked. SLICHTENHORST, Arend van.
First edition of the first complete history of Gelderland in Dutch, by Arend van Slichtenhorst (ca. 1615-1657), who studied at Leiden and became a lawyer in his native city Arnhem. The work was based upon, and partly a translation of Pontanus' Historiae Gelricae, but Slichtenhorst thoroughly revised, corrected and much enlarged the Latin original. Slichtenhorst starts with the topography and cities of the region, continuing with Gelderland during the reign of Julius Caesar up to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The large folding map, by no one less than Willem Jansz. Blaeu, gives an overview of the entire province, while four double-page maps render parts of the province in greater detail. With presentation inscription dated 1823, and an owner's inscription dated 1694. Some words and sentences struck through, rending them unreadable. Tear on p. 1, repaired with tape, some of the folding plates reinforced with tape as well. Some waterstains throughout the text and some plates are heavily browned. Binding rebacked, as noted. Otherwise a good copy.Bodel Nijenhuis 582; Gouda Quint, Bibliogr. Gelderland, p. 8; Nijhoff & V. TRIGAULT (Nicolas)
Sommervogel VIII, 238 [Attributes: First Edition]
