Jacques CALLOT (Nancy 1592 - 1635)
Bibliografia: G. G. Bertelà & A. P. Tofani … [Click Below for Full Description]

AMATI, Scipione
Rome Giacomo Mascardi 1615. Very rare FIRST EDITION of this critical source for THE SECOND JAPANESE MISSION TO EUROPE of 1614, a Franciscan public relations event that sought to repeat the success of the first mission of 1585—which had been brilliantly engineered by their rivals the Jesuits—and to inspire financial and political support. The number of publications produced by the Franciscans concerning Japan is small compared to those by Jesuits. Although the results of the embassy for the mission back in Japan were negligible, the trip nonetheless deserves an important place in the history of East-West exchange. The embassy was masterminded by the Franciscan missionary Luis Sotelo (1574-1624), active in Japan since 1603. In 1613, when persecution of all Christians began to increase in Japan, he was thrown into jail in Edo, slated for martyrdom. The intervention of the daimyo of Oshu, Date Masamune, an ally of the Tokagawas in Northern Japan, prevented this, and an embassy to Europe was soonafter envisioned. The embassy set out in October of 1613 with the daimyo’s representative and a large retinue of Japanese merchants and attendants (roughly 68 persons according to Lach). After stops in Manila and Acapulco, the embassy proceeded to Mexico City; roughly half of the original party disembarked there, with the remainder arriving in Seville in October of 1614."Shortly after their arrival a brief Relacion was published which purported to summarize an edict by Date establishing the Christian faith in ‘all of his kingdom’ and ordering the dispatch of his ambassador to Spain in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

The embassy set out in October of 1613 with the daimyo's representative and a large retinue of Japanese merchants and attendants (roughly 68 persons according to Lach). After stops in Manila and Acapulco, the embassy proceeded to Mexico City; roughly half of the original party disembarked there, with the remainder arriving in Seville in October of 1614."Shortly after their arrival a brief Relacion was published which purported to summarize an edict by Date establishing the Christian faith in 'all of his kingdom' and ordering the dispatch of his ambassador to Spain i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Philostratus, Flavius
A. Paris: chez la veufue Abel. l'Angelier ... et la veufue M. Gvillemot, 1615. First edition. Fine. A magnificent example of the first illustrated edition of Blaise de Vigenère's French translation of the "Imagines of the Philostrati," by two Greek sophists of the Roman imperial period. Large Folio (420 x 270 mm), collates: [18], 921, [49], complete. Signatures: Full leather binding, rebacked with spine laid down, but tight and Fine. A few marginal stains to pages, but pages unmarked, crisp and in Fine condition. A truly extraordinary example of this work. Engraved title by Jaspar Isac and 68 large engravings in the text by L.Gaultier & T. de Leu after designs by A.Caron & J.Isac. Numerous head and tail pieces and woodcut initials. & & The original work was ostensibly a method to described and explain contemporary artwork to a younger audience. "Blaise de Vigenere designed an 'antique gallery' of 65 textual-pictorial enigmas enclosing all the world's arcana. He founded a dialogue, a secret mode of plastic speech, that sought to 'transmit to future centuries techniques and knowledge that are falling into oblivion, of which he may be one of the last keepers" (Conley, 1997). Of additional interest to those supporting the view that Sir Francis Bacon was the true author of Shakespeare's works due to masonic devices on the title page and a "spear - shaker" plate. With the printed book label of "Charles Butler of Warren Wood Hatfield" whose substantial collections were sold by Sotheby's in 1911. Housed in a custom slipcase. Fine.

STRADANUS, Johannes
Antwerp - Beautiful impression from Stradanus' "Americae Retectio", circa 1615. The scene depicts Amerigo Vespucci representing the Old World explorers as he wakes up a Native American from her hammock slumber. Local flora and fauna dot the background, as well as natives having a cannibalistic roast. Johannes Stradanus or van der Straat, (1523-1605) was a Flemish artist but spent much of his life in Florence. Stradanus sent his original drawings of "Nova Reperta" ("New Inventions"), a Renaissance celebration of recent discoveries both scientific and geographical, to Antwerp where they were first engraved and published by Phillipe Galle circa 1600. This edition was republished by Galle's son. Stain to center right, slight glue residue and hinges along top margin. View. Uncolored engraving. Images measures 7.25" x 10.5".

Title page printed in red and black, Some mid 17th century listings of the book being offered for sale on the front blank, from the library of J. B. Hazard. Contemporary ownership signature on the lower title page. The text is in Latin. The work contains 12 texts of different authors whose titles are sufficiently significant by their disrespectful characters The text is written in Latin and not in vulgar language, while in fact it is a violent satire against the learned ones and church, (which it did not fool as it placed the book in its index of the prohibited books). Wikipedia: "Frischlin was educated as a scholar of "Tübinger Stift" at the university of Tübingen, where in 1568 he was promoted to the chair of poetry and history. In 1575 for his comedy of Rebecca, which he read at Regensburg before the emperor Maximilian II, he was rewarded with the laureateship, and in 1577 he was made an imperial count palatine (Comes palatinus Caesareus) or Pfalzgraf. In 1582 his unguarded language and reckless life made it necessary that he should leave Tübingen, and he accepted a mastership at Laibach in Carniola (nowadays Ljubljana in Slovenia), which he held for about two years. Shortly after his return to the university in 1584, he was threatened with a criminal prosecution on a charge of immoral conduct, and the threat led to his withdrawal to Frankfurt am Main in 1587. For eighteen months he taught in the Brunswick gymnasium, and he appears also to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cabeceras grabadas en madera. Ejemplar con la portada remarginada en la parte superior y el papel con huellas de oxidación, más acusadas en unas zonas que en otras.
