Godinho, Nicolao
Lugduni, 1615. 12mo. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title. Front pastedown detached from text block, modern bookplates on front pastedown. Lightly tanned. Very good. An important treatise on Ethiopia and the efforts of the Jesuit missionaries there, written by fellow Jesuit Nicolao Godinho. In 1555 the Church in Rome assigned Ethiopia to the Jesuits for missionary endeavor, and particularly Portuguese members of the Order, since there was already a small Portuguese trade with the kingdom. Joao Nunes Barreto was consecrated Bishop of Ethiopia in Lisbon, before he and fellow Jesuit Andres de Oviedo set out for Goa, where the arrived in September 1556. Here it was decided that the arrival of a foreign bishop without proper groundwork being laid might be a bad idea, and so Barreto stayed in Goa, where he died in 1562. Oviedo proceeded to Ethiopia, arriving there in the fall of 1557. He spent the next two years fruitlessly attempting to persuade the Emperor to join the Roman church, before storming out of court in 1559. He was never readmitted, although he spent the next eighteen years in missionary work there, dying in 1577. A number of Catholic missionaries were critical of how the Jesuits had behaved. Dominican Friar Luis de Urreta wrote a work, published in 1611, which was deeply critical of Oviedo and his tactics. Urreta did not help his credibility, however, by making a number of wild claims about Ethiopia. Godinho, a Portuguese Jesuit based in Rome, served as a reviser of works to be published in Portuguese. In this position he was privy to information from a wide … [Click Below for Full Description]

Liber Aggregationis seu Liber Secretorum de Virtutibus Herbarum Lapidum & Animaluim quorundam (With an Appendix : De Horis Dierum & a second Appendix ... De Mirabilibus Mundi). x; 11-411 pages. Contemporary vellum. A pleasing tight copy with contemporary ink titles on spine, an early ownership inscription relating to a library 'ad SS. Petrum et Paulum' and bookplate testifying to the book's being a gift from a canon of Wratislava to the University Library of Freiburg in 1891. Michael Scot, born in Scotland about 1175, was the leading intellectual in Europe during the early 13th century. An alchemist, physician, astrologer and theologian, his insistence on experience, and allusions to experiments influenced the methods later used by Grosseteste and Roger Bacon. De Secretis Naturae is Scot's account of physiognomy, forming a third part to Liber introductorius and Liber Particularis. Its primary subject is human generation, conception and pregnancy. But there are also later sections on dreams and their significance, on auguries and sneezing, and finally on parts of the body, their differences and meanings. His work is bound with a substantial related text, De Secretis Mulierum, by a pupil of Albertus Magnus, the outstanding polymath of the later 13th century, and several texts of Albertus himself. First edit, thus. Hardcover. Good. 12mo. Book.

Haestens, Hendrik van.
Chez Loys Elzevier, 1615. French-language translation of De bloedige belegeringe der stad Oostende in Vlaanderen, a classic account of siege of Ostend (1601-04), a protracted battle during the Eighty Years' War (i.e., the War for Dutch Independence) that eventually ousted the Dutch from Belgium. The text is illustrated with a full page engraved portrait of Mauretius of Nassau, an engraving of his coat of arms, and => 14 engraved folding plates. A curious aspect of this Elzevir production is that the firm used very inferior paper and many of the surviving copies are severely browned in sections; this copy is no exception. The anomaly is clearly visible in the copy that the Austrian National Library (i.e., Österreichische Nationalbibliothek) digitized for googlebooks.

[4] ff., 293 [i.e., 297], [1] pp., 14 fold. plates, port., coat of arms.. 1615 French-language translation of De bloedige belegeringe der stad Oostende in Vlaanderen, a classic account of siege of Ostend (1601?-04), a protracted battle during the Eighty Years' War (i.e., the War for Dutch Independence) that eventually ousted the Dutch from Belgium. The anomaly is clearly visible in the copy that the Austrian National Library (i.e., ?-sterreichische Nationalbibliothek) digitized for googlebooks. Contemporary vellum over pasteboards; a large portion of the vellum gone from the rear cover, exposing the boards, and front free endpaper lacking. Evidence of ties. Several quires severely browned, others age-toned; some leaves loosened; worming in margins, only occasionally entering text. A lesser copy, essentially a near good one; still, rare and interesting.

FLORUS (Lucius Annaeus).
A Paris, en la boutique de Nivelle, chez Sébastien Cramoisy, 1615. - in-8. 16ff. 489pp. (i.e. 519). 10ff. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

AMATI, Scipione
Rome Giacomo Mascardi 1615. Very rare FIRST EDITION of this critical source for THE SECOND JAPANESE MISSION TO EUROPE of 1614, a Franciscan public relations event that sought to repeat the success of the first mission of 1585—which had been brilliantly engineered by their rivals the Jesuits—and to inspire financial and political support. The number of publications produced by the Franciscans concerning Japan is small compared to those by Jesuits. Although the results of the embassy for the mission back in Japan were negligible, the trip nonetheless deserves an important place in the history of East-West exchange. The embassy was masterminded by the Franciscan missionary Luis Sotelo (1574-1624), active in Japan since 1603. In 1613, when persecution of all Christians began to increase in Japan, he was thrown into jail in Edo, slated for martyrdom. The intervention of the daimyo of Oshu, Date Masamune, an ally of the Tokagawas in Northern Japan, prevented this, and an embassy to Europe was soonafter envisioned. The embassy set out in October of 1613 with the daimyo’s representative and a large retinue of Japanese merchants and attendants (roughly 68 persons according to Lach). After stops in Manila and Acapulco, the embassy proceeded to Mexico City; roughly half of the original party disembarked there, with the remainder arriving in Seville in October of 1614."Shortly after their arrival a brief Relacion was published which purported to summarize an edict by Date establishing the Christian faith in ‘all of his kingdom’ and ordering the dispatch of his ambassador to Spain in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

These may be described thusly: une aigle au vol abaisse, surmontant une croix ancree, fixant au canton dextre un soleil accostee de deux croissants affrontes. * "A well printed, and accurate edition, compiled by the Editor, when a young man, and does very great credit to his critical abilities; besides the notes of Bourdelot, which are very concise and chiefly critical; it contains some by Micyllus, Guerinus, Marcilius, and Cognatus. The book contains 12 texts by different authors whose titles are significant enough by their irreverent characters (you will notice several Disputatio but on cucurbits or right to joke). The text is written in Latin and not in the vernacular, which makes a violent satire against the learned and the church, which does not deceive when it placed the book in its index of prohibited books.
