Haestens, Hendrik van.
Chez Loys Elzevier, 1615. French-language translation of De bloedige belegeringe der stad Oostende in Vlaanderen, a classic account of siege of Ostend (1601-04), a protracted battle during the Eighty Years' War (i.e., the War for Dutch Independence) that eventually ousted the Dutch from Belgium. The text is illustrated with a full page engraved portrait of Mauretius of Nassau, an engraving of his coat of arms, and => 14 engraved folding plates. A curious aspect of this Elzevir production is that the firm used very inferior paper and many of the surviving copies are severely browned in sections; this copy is no exception. The anomaly is clearly visible in the copy that the Austrian National Library (i.e., Österreichische Nationalbibliothek) digitized for googlebooks.

Title pages of volumes I and II in red and black. Brand of printer: a crown. Printing on both columns, often centered text and comments being distributed around; all in all a very archaic way at that time. The same codex, with comments from Godfrey seemed to Father Jean Vignon, Eustache Vignon in 1594 the first of which appears to be from 1583 (as evidenced by a note on the back of the title page of the second volume also) .Absent catalogs of the National Bibliotèque and the British Library; one copy to Glasgow at Cologne. Several copies in Switzerland and Germany, but that bear the address of Cologne, apparently fictitious and matching sheepskin Genève.Demi blond ca 1800 Smooth spine decorated with two boxes to the grotesque and two carrying several irons. Part of title in red morocco long grain and volume number in black morocco long grain. A jaw restored with small rips lack in tail cap for both volumes. Friction. The publication by Denys Godefroy Corpus Juris Civilis is his great work, although the material is borrowed for all commentators of the sixteenth century; the fact remains that his work compiler has been immense … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Paris 8vo (17.1 cm, 6.75"). 22, [2 (blank)] pp.. 1615] Anonymous political pamphlet warning of impending disaster for all of France as a result of the proposed marriage between Louis XIII and Anne of Austria, making use of classical analogies for various important figures and events. The title is taken from the header; Lindsay & Neu's main entry for the piece describes the work has having 16 pages, although at least three holdings describe 22 pages as seen here. WorldCat and Lindsay & Neu combine to locate eight copies in the U.S. Recent paper–covered boards, front cover with printed paper label. A few pages institutionally pressure-stamped; inked numeral in upper outer corner of p. 2. Light foxing; pinhole worming in lower margins, not touching text. Two leaves with inner margins reinforced. A nice copy of an uncommon item.

FLORUS (Lucius Annaeus).
A Paris, en la boutique de Nivelle, chez Sébastien Cramoisy, 1615. - in-8. 16ff. 489pp. (i.e. 519). 10ff. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

AMATI, Scipione
Rome Giacomo Mascardi 1615. Very rare FIRST EDITION of this critical source for THE SECOND JAPANESE MISSION TO EUROPE of 1614, a Franciscan public relations event that sought to repeat the success of the first mission of 1585—which had been brilliantly engineered by their rivals the Jesuits—and to inspire financial and political support. The number of publications produced by the Franciscans concerning Japan is small compared to those by Jesuits. Although the results of the embassy for the mission back in Japan were negligible, the trip nonetheless deserves an important place in the history of East-West exchange. The embassy was masterminded by the Franciscan missionary Luis Sotelo (1574-1624), active in Japan since 1603. In 1613, when persecution of all Christians began to increase in Japan, he was thrown into jail in Edo, slated for martyrdom. The intervention of the daimyo of Oshu, Date Masamune, an ally of the Tokagawas in Northern Japan, prevented this, and an embassy to Europe was soonafter envisioned. The embassy set out in October of 1613 with the daimyo’s representative and a large retinue of Japanese merchants and attendants (roughly 68 persons according to Lach). After stops in Manila and Acapulco, the embassy proceeded to Mexico City; roughly half of the original party disembarked there, with the remainder arriving in Seville in October of 1614."Shortly after their arrival a brief Relacion was published which purported to summarize an edict by Date establishing the Christian faith in ‘all of his kingdom’ and ordering the dispatch of his ambassador to Spain in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

FACETIAE FACETIARUM
First Edition of this collection of humorous texts based primarily on smut and drink. Binding posterior mid nineteenth half glazed calf burgundy (back thinned) to nerves and gilt and cold. The book contains 12 texts by different authors whose titles are significant enough by their irreverent characters (you will notice several Disputatio but on cucurbits or right to joke). The text is written in Latin and not in the vernacular, which makes a violent satire against the learned and the church, which does not deceive when it placed the book in its index of prohibited books. Antverpiae: Ex Officina Plantiniana, apud viduam & filios Ioannis Moreti 4to (24.13 cm, 9.5"). [6] ff., 284, pp., [2] ff.. 1615 First edition. A multi-part memorial volume from the Plantin–Moretus press in honor of Philippe Rubens (1574–1611), brother of the famed artist, whose Greek and Latin rendition of the Homilies by Asterius, Bishop of Amasia (ca. 375–405), occupies the first section of the text, here in Greek and Latin printed in double columns. Little is known about Asterius, Bishop of Amasea, and there has been much scholarly debate regarding exactly which homilies should be attributed to his authorship and which to other early Christians, including Asterius the Sophist; the Catholic Encyclopedia online says his works provide "valuable material to the Christian archaeologist." The second section here includes verses Rubens composed in the later years prior to his death in 1611 and dedicated to illustrious members of his circle including the humanist Justus Lipsius, Janus Woverius, and Peter Paul Rubens and Isabelle Brant, who married in 1609. BrantÂ’s father, Jan, composed the introductory letter to the reader. The volume was published at the request of Cardinal Ascanius Columnas in an edition of => only 750 copies, and was printed at Antwerp at the press of MoretusÂ’ widow and sons with the famous Plantin device appearing in two versions (engraved, to the title, and woodcut, to the final recto). A full-page engraved funeral portrait of Rubens engraved by Cornelius Galle => after Peter Paul Rubens signals the beginning of the third section, in which Jan Brant re … [Click Below for Full Description]

Un punto de polilla afecta mínimamente una letra en las primeras hojas y la portada con alguna suciedad muy discreta, por lo demás magnífico ejemplar en su estado completamente jenuíno. Gardner, The Life and Works of Jerónimo de Contreras, Ann Arbor, 1985. [Click Below for Full Description]

GUEVARA, Antonio de.
STCN (1 copy); not in Bibl. Belg.; Simoni. Very rare edition of Guevara's extremely popular and partly fictional biography of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180), which made the emperor a paragon of virtue and a popular subject in art and literature. Guevara claimed to have discovered an ancient manuscript containing twenty letters written by Marcus Aurelius, publishing them in the second half of his book, but in fact he invented them and used them as a didactic and literary device. This imaginative fictional basis for his biography no doubt resulted in a much more popular book than any true story could have, for it spoke to his contemporaries and provided a model for a wise ruler. With 2 owner's inscriptions on title-page. Some occasional browning and a small tear and hole in title-page, otherwise in very good condition.
