FACETIAE FACETIARUM
First Edition of this collection of humorous texts based primarily on smut and drink. Binding posterior mid nineteenth half glazed calf burgundy (back thinned) to nerves and gilt and cold. The book contains 12 texts by different authors whose titles are significant enough by their irreverent characters (you will notice several Disputatio but on cucurbits or right to joke). The text is written in Latin and not in the vernacular, which makes a violent satire against the learned and the church, which does not deceive when it placed the book in its index of prohibited books. Mattheus Delio de arte Jocandi, Nicodemi Frischlini in ebrietatem elegia De Peditu, eiusque Speciebus De Iure Potandi disputatio De Lustitudine Studentica De Cucurbitatione disputatio feudalis, Bonus Mulier sive of mulieribus De Osculis Iucunda dissertatio, De Natura Iure & Pennalium disputation, Obsopoeus Vincent de arte bibendi De Virginibus Inaugural Theses, floja cortum Versicale. Asterius, Episcopus Amasenus
Antverpiae: Ex Officina Plantiniana, apud viduam & filios Ioannis Moreti 4to (24.13 cm, 9.5"). [6] ff., 284, pp., [2] ff.. 1615 First edition. A multi-part memorial volume from the Plantin–Moretus press in honor of Philippe Rubens (1574–1611), brother of the famed artist, whose Greek and Latin rendition of the Homilies by Asterius, Bishop of Amasia (ca. 375–405), occupies the first section of the text, here in Greek and Latin printed in double columns. Little is known about Asterius, Bishop of Amasea, and there has been much scholarly debate regarding exactly which homilies should be attributed to his authorship and which to other early Christians, including Asterius the Sophist; the Catholic Encyclopedia online says his works provide "valuable material to the Christian archaeologist." The second section here includes verses Rubens composed in the later years prior to his death in 1611 and dedicated to illustrious members of his circle including the humanist Justus Lipsius, Janus Woverius, and Peter Paul Rubens and Isabelle Brant, who married in 1609. BrantÂ’s father, Jan, composed the introductory letter to the reader. The volume was published at the request of Cardinal Ascanius Columnas in an edition of => only 750 copies, and was printed at Antwerp at the press of MoretusÂ’ widow and sons with the famous Plantin device appearing in two versions (engraved, to the title, and woodcut, to the final recto). A full-page engraved funeral portrait of Rubens engraved by Cornelius Galle => after Peter Paul Rubens signals the beginning of the third section, in which Jan Brant re … [Click Below for Full Description]

Un punto de polilla afecta mínimamente una letra en las primeras hojas y la portada con alguna suciedad muy discreta, por lo demás magnífico ejemplar en su estado completamente jenuíno. Gardner, The Life and Works of Jerónimo de Contreras, Ann Arbor, 1985. [Click Below for Full Description]

GUEVARA, Antonio de.
STCN (1 copy); not in Bibl. Belg.; Simoni. Very rare edition of Guevara's extremely popular and partly fictional biography of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (AD 121-180), which made the emperor a paragon of virtue and a popular subject in art and literature. Guevara claimed to have discovered an ancient manuscript containing twenty letters written by Marcus Aurelius, publishing them in the second half of his book, but in fact he invented them and used them as a didactic and literary device. This imaginative fictional basis for his biography no doubt resulted in a much more popular book than any true story could have, for it spoke to his contemporaries and provided a model for a wise ruler. With 2 owner's inscriptions on title-page. Some occasional browning and a small tear and hole in title-page, otherwise in very good condition.

LEY, Jan Hendricksz. Jarichs van der.
Bierens de Haan 2308 & 2309; KVK & WorldCat (2 copies with both works, incl. 1 now lost, plus 1 of Voyages alone); NCC (same 2 copies of both works); STCN (1 of the same copies of both works); not in Maritiem Digitaal. Two extremely rare works on navigation (both the first editions in this form, though the first greatly expands a related work from 1615), describing the method developed by Jan Hendrick Jarichs van der Ley (1565-1639), mathematician and tax collector of the Admiralty board in Dokkum, Friesland, to estimate longitude at sea. The present copy of the Gesicht includes a leaf that was removed in the only other copy located. Van der Ley had first presented his system to the public in dialogue form in his 1615 Het gulden zeeghel, but his present Gesicht for the first time gives a complete and systematic description of his method. No practical solution to the actual determination of longitude at sea existed until John Harrison demonstrated his chronometer in 1761, methods used before that either proving inaccurate or requiring more sophisticated astronomical measurements than most ships could implement. Van der Ley therefore developed a detailed system for estimating latitude and longitude based in part on estimates of the distance sailed. The estimated latitude could easily be checked by simple astronomical observations, which also helped to correct errors in the estimated longitude, which could not be checked directly. The method's greatest disadvantage was that any errors in longitude made for the various parts of a voyage would be compounded in the estimate of th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Title page printed in red and black, Some mid 17th century listings of the book being offered for sale on the front blank, from the library of J. B. Hazard. Contemporary ownership signature on the lower title page. The text is in Latin. The work contains 12 texts of different authors whose titles are sufficiently significant by their disrespectful characters The text is written in Latin and not in vulgar language, while in fact it is a violent satire against the learned ones and church, (which it did not fool as it placed the book in its index of the prohibited books). Wikipedia: "Frischlin was educated as a scholar of "Tübinger Stift" at the university of Tübingen, where in 1568 he was promoted to the chair of poetry and history. In 1575 for his comedy of Rebecca, which he read at Regensburg before the emperor Maximilian II, he was rewarded with the laureateship, and in 1577 he was made an imperial count palatine (Comes palatinus Caesareus) or Pfalzgraf. In 1582 his unguarded language and reckless life made it necessary that he should leave Tübingen, and he accepted a mastership at Laibach in Carniola (nowadays Ljubljana in Slovenia), which he held for about two years. Shortly after his return to the university in 1584, he was threatened with a criminal prosecution on a charge of immoral conduct, and the threat led to his withdrawal to Frankfurt am Main in 1587. For eighteen months he taught in the Brunswick gymnasium, and he appears also to hav … [Click Below for Full Description]
