BIBLE; English; Geneva version.)
London: Robert Barker, , 1615. Quarto in eights (208 x 154 mm). Later 17th-century black morocco, decorative gilt spine, 18th-century red morocco label, roll-tool border on sides enclosing gilt roll tool panels and crowned corner ornaments, marbled endpapers. Engraved title pages, double-page map of the Holy Land (in the Genealogies), other wood-engravings in the text. Binding a little rubbed, some headlines shaved by the binder, a few neat old repairs, tear across fore-corner of Qq8 (with loss of some words), repair to margin of 3E6 (with loss of side note), a few faint burn marks in same gathering (doubtless from the proximity of a candle), but overall in very good condition and complete with title pages and the blank leaf A1. A most attractive Jacobean Bible in the Geneva version, the version still used by Oliver Cromwell in the middle of the 17th century. Herbert describes this 1615 printing as "the last roman type quarto edition of this version printed by Barker". Herbert 342.

SCAMOZZI, VINCENZO
Venetiis: [Printed by Giorgio Valentino for] Vincenzo Scamozzi, 1615. FIRST EDITION n. Despite its confusing collation, this is a complete as well as especially attractive copy of the first appearance of one of the great 17th century treatises on Renaissance architecture. In Wittkower's words, it is written by one who "enjoyed an undisputed international reputation and provided a direct link with Palladio." Scamozzi had been a student of, and then assistant to, that great master and took over his unfinished ventures at Palladio's death in 1580. One of two major works by Scamozzi (the other being "Discorsi Sopra L';Antichita di Roma" of 1582), "Idea" is based upon our author';s study of ancient writers in concert with his personal investigation of the ruins of Rome, which he considered essential, the present always being informed by the past. The book is a lavish production with well-designed text, with illustrations that clearly reinforce the written content, and with an aesthetically pleasing overall appearance. Born in Vicenza as the son of a building contractor, and influenced in his early life by Serlio, Vincenzo Scamozzi (1552-1616) was a gentleman-scholar-artist-philosopher of architecture whose interest and understanding in his field was extremely broad. In the "Idea," he divides architecture into four aspects: humanist discipline, building, decoration, and preservation. He delves in detail into cities, public buildings, private houses, foundations, columns, vaulting, roofs, planning, design, tools, etc.--in short, the whole gamut of architectural theory, practicalit … [Click Below for Full Description]

SLICHTENHORST, Arend van.
Bodel Nijenhuis 582; Gouda Quint, Bibliogr. Gelderland, p. 8; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 281. First edition of the first complete history of Gelderland in Dutch, by Arend van Slichtenhorst (ca. 1615-1657), who studied at Leiden and became a lawyer inis native city Arnhem. The work was based upon, and partly a translation of Pontanus' Historiae Gelricae, but Slichtenhorst thoroughly revised, corrected and much enlarged the Latin original. Slichtenhorst starts with the topography and cities of the region, continuing with Gelderland during the reign of Julius Caesar up to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The large folding map, by no one less than Willem Jansz. Blaeu, gives an overview of the entire province, while four double-page maps render parts of the province in greater detail. With presentation inscription dated 1823, and an owner's inscription dated 1694. Some words and sentences struck through, rending them unreadable. Tear on p. 1, repaired with tape, some of the folding plates reinforced with tape as well. Some waterstains thoughout the text and some plates are heavily browned. Binding rebacked, as noted. Otherwise a good copy.

VIRGILIO (VERGILIUS MARO, Publius)
Venetia : appresso i Sessa 1615 Virgìlio (o Vergìlio) Maròne, Publio (lat. Publius Vergilius Maro) è un poeta latino (n. presso Mantova, ad Andes, forse l'od. Pietole, 70 a. C. - m. Brindisi 19 a. C.). Motto: Dissimilium in fida sotietas. Iniziali, fregi e finalini xilogr. Testo su due colonne in latino e in italiano che circondano il testo virgiliano. Le cc 197 e 199 erroneam. num. 187, ripetuta la c 196. 100cc, 322cc
