SANDYS, George
London: George Sandys. unbound. Miniature map. Colored engraving. Sheet measures 10.25" x 6.75". This lovely map (circa 1615) depicts the Grand Harbor of Malta. The map shows a birds-eye view of the harbor with the City of Valetta and its vicinity during the Siege of Malta in 1565. Fortifications are noted throughout, including Fort Saint Angelo, Fort Saint Michael and Fort Saint Elmo. Ships can be seen in the harbor. Known as one of the bloodiest battles ever fought, the Great Siege of Malta was fought between the Knights of Malta and the Ottoman Empire. Although being heavily outnumbered by the Ottoman fleet, the Knights under the command of Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valetta eventually gained victory after the battle moved from Fort Saint Elmo to Fort Saint Angelo. Perhaps the most gruesome point of the battle was when, following the capture of Fort Saint Elmo, the Ottomans decapitated the bodies of the Knights and floated the corpses across the Grand Harbor. As a response, Valetta ordered that the Ottoman prisoners be executed and their heads used as cannonballs that were fired into the Turkish camp. According to the famous philosopher Voltaire, "Nothing is better known as the Siege of Malta". The capital city of Valetta was founded and named after Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valetta, hailed a hero following the Siege. He was later buried there. This map appeared in "Relation of a Journey Begun An: Dom: 1610" by George Sandys. Includes descriptive text about the battle above and below the map as well as on verso. In good condition with some foxing and min … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHEINER, Christoph; TANNER, Adam.
Ingolstadt: Eder for Elisabeth Angermaria, 1614 & 1615. First edition. First edition, in a beautiful contemporary binding, of Scheiner's very rare work containing the second earliest map of the moon - but the first to give topographical details - as well as the first illustrations of a telescope. It builds upon Scheiner's 1612 discovery of sunspots, made using a telescope he built himself, which led to his famous controversy with Galileo. This work discusses almost all the astronomical issues then current, especially those brought about by the newly invented telescope. There is an extensive argument against the notion of an infinite universe, illustrated by a striking full-page woodcut on p. 17 of 'Chaos infinitum ex atomis' surrounding the sphere of fixed stars. This is followed by a detailed examination of the Copernican heliocentric theory, as well as the Tychonic system, which he supported, and that of Fracastoro; the systems are illustrated by three large diagrams. Then follow discussions of the moon (including its 'secondary light'), the sun (with a full examination of sunspots), and the planets. On p. 58 is an extraordinary map of the moon, with craters and other features labelled and listed, including Mare Crisium, Mare Tranquilitatis, Mare Foecunditatis, Mare Nectaris and the crater Aristoteles. The only earlier maps of the moon are those published in Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius (1610), but these are "apparently but schematic views of what Galileo saw with his telescope, for none of the features recorded on them can be identified with certainty with any known format … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giuseppe de ROSSI il giovane (Roma 1601 circa - 1644)
[Click Below for Full Description]

SLICHTENHORST, Arend van.
1615. Bodel Nijenhuis 582; Gouda Quint, Bibliogr. Gelderland, p. 8; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 281. First edition of the first complete history of Gelderland in Dutch, by Arend van Slichtenhorst (ca. 1615-1657), who studied at Leiden and became a lawyer in his native city Arnhem. The work was based upon, and partly a translation of Pontanus' Historiae Gelricae, but Slichtenhorst thoroughly revised, corrected and much enlarged the Latin original. Slichtenhorst starts with the topography and cities of the region, continuing with Gelderland during the reign of Julius Caesar up to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The large folding map, by no one less than Willem Jansz. Blaeu, gives an overview of the entire province, while four double-page maps render parts of the province in greater detail. With presentation inscription dated 1823, and an owner's inscription dated 1694. Some words and sentences struck through, rending them unreadable. Tear on p. 1, repaired with tape, some of the folding plates reinforced with tape as well. Some waterstains throughout the text and some plates are heavily browned. Binding rebacked, as noted. Otherwise a good copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

The second title has an oval woodcut printer's mark; it depicts a thisle flank by the initials A and D. of Ambrosius (Ambroise) Drouart, the brother of Hieronymus (Jerôme). Hieronymus kept using his brother's printer's after his death in 1608; the motto, in fact 2 mottoes, reads: 'Nul ne s'y frote', 'patere aut abstine' ('let no one meddle', and 'bear of forebear'). The first volume contains a preface, the Latin text of the Satires and 18 pages with 'Glossae veteres in Persium'. Max. iussu editum, et Clementis VIII ? recognitum." Unter dem Titel und Drucker steht noch: "Cum Privilegiis Pont. Max & Franc. & navar. Regis Christianissimi. M. DCXV De licentia???"
