[Biblia arabico-latina - Psalmi].
1614. 4to. (8), 474, (6) pp. With two woodcut coats of arms on t. p. and at the end. Late 19th century half calf. First edition of this adaptation of the Psalms, set in Arabic-Latin parallel text. Printed in some 3000 copies, most of which were used for a 1619 re-issue with only the title page changed. Famous for the clarity and elegance of the typeface created by Savary de Brèves: the extensive vocalisation helped this handy quarto volume achieve immense popularity among oriental scholars throughout Europe. Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf. Balagna, L'imprimerie arabe en occident, p. 55f.); as it occasionally departs from the Vulgate (as does the translation by the Maronites Sionita and Scialac), an extensive imprimatur was necessary. - Bellarmin's Arabic catechism and the Arabic-Latin Psalter would remain the only works to leave the Typographia Savariana in Rome; the types have survived and are now in the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris. - From the library of the Biblical scholar Samuel Davidson (1806-98) with his ms. ownership to title page; binding slightly bumped, but a fine copy altogether. 496 y 497). ONGARO, Antonio
Per Vitt. Baldini, 1614. FIRST EDITION thus. 4to. ff. 8, pp. 9-40, ff. 41-48, pp. 49-306, [ii]. Roman and Italic letter. Title within architectural border with putti and heroic figures at sides, arms of the dedicatee at center, floriated woodcut initials, borders and head and tail pieces, typographical and woodcut ornaments. Feint C18 library stamp on title and second leaf of the 'Libraria Colonna' one of Italy's greatest families, on pastedown. Light occasional marginal spotting, a very good copy, crisp and clean, in dark blue paper over boards c.1800, spine gilt in bands, surface tear from upper compartment, all edges yellow. Excellent edition of Ongaro's pastoral, L'Alceo, with the first edition of Guarini's intermezzi, effectively the great poet's last work, with explanatory essays on the intermezzi and the production of the work at Ferrara in 1613 by Arsiccio. Little is known about Ongaro who died very young, shortly after the first publication of this, his only major work. He was in the service of the Farnese at Ferrara where he would have seen the first production of Tasso's L'Aminta in 1572 which had such an influence on him. Tasso's success inspired him to write the present work, though instead of using shepherds as the pastoral subject, he chose fishermen. The work was well received, if criticised for its use of coarse fishermen's language, though the beauty of its verse was recognised. It was however so closely based on L'Aminta that malicious tongues called it the "Aminta bagnato" (the wet Aminta). It was widely published well into the eighteenth century. BARTOLI Cosimo
Venezia, Sebastiano Combi, 1614. In-4° piccolo (22 x 7), ff. 145+(3). (D.B.I., VI/p. 563). HOEFNAGEL, J.] SADELER, J.
- A suite of 38 engravings (145 x 210mm) after Hoefnagel's 'Archetypa'. Old boards. Copies by Justus Sadeler of Hoefnagel's beautiful and influential pattern book, one of the principal sources of seventeenth century still life painting. Hoefnagel's 'Archetypa' consists of 4 parts with 52 engravings. Sadeler copies Hoefnagel, albeit with quite some changes. The lettering is different and there are a number of spelling mistakes. Many of the plates are slightly different adding small animals or replacing others. The second plate of the present work is dedicated to 'All' Illmo Sigr. mio Sigr. et Pron. Colmo. Il Sigr. Lorenzo Soranzo Podestà et Capitano di Treuiso' engraved by Jo. De Fris. DD. Each plate is illustrated with insects, small animals, flowers, fruits, vegetables, etc, most have captions in Latin.Sadeler's suite of plates seems to be even rarer than Hoefnagel's original. We offered in our catalogue 290 no. 40 (2011) a copy with 39 plates (one more plate than the present copy) and according to Dr. Sam Segal that copy was the most complete copy known. He only knows of 2 copies. One copy formely in the library of C.G. van Tubbergen, Haarlem with 31 plates and another one with 19 plates. WorldCat lists a copy in America with 37 plates, which was purchased from Lathrop Harper's catalogue 197 no. 58. It is however unknown if Sadeler's suite of plates ever contained the same number of plates as Hoefnagel's work.Justus Sadeler (Antwerp 1572?-c. 1620) was a member of a famous family of engravers and the son of Jan Sadeler I. It is one of the earliest published personal narratives of a circumnavigation, and the first to recount a circumnavigation beginning in the Americas. "Pedro Ordoñez de Cevallos was born at Jaen in the middle of the sixteenth century. At an early age he travelled to Chile, the Antilles and Mexico in Valverde's fleet. Later he visited the Philippines from Acapulco and various East Indian Islands. In this account of his travels are many interesting details regarding the productions, costumes, customs and manners, from a soldier's point of view" - Herschel Jones. Ordoñez de Cevallos was born about 1557, and travelled extensively as a soldier of fortune from the 1570s in the eastern Mediterranean, to Jerusalem, Crete, and north Africa. In the 1580s he went to the New World, visiting Bermuda en route. The narrative is one of the earliest publications to include material about Bermuda, containing two chapters about the island.
