(BINDINGS - CARDINAL RICHELIEU). MAXIMUS TYRIUS
Lugduni Batavorum [Leyden]: Ioannem Patium [Jan Paets], 1614. Second Edition. This is a collection of 41 dissertations on various philosophical, ethical, and theological topics by the second century Greek rhetorician and philosopher Maximus of Tyre, offered here in a superb binding and with very distinguished provenance. The volume also contains the "Handbook on Platonism" of Maximus' contemporary Alcinous, along with the notes and emendations of the illustrious classical scholar Daniel Heinsius. Finally, included here are the notes of Henri Estienne, printer of the 1557 editio princeps and a respected Greek scholar in his own right. The leading scholar of the Dutch Renaissance, Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655) was a professor of Greek and director of the library at the University of Leyden, and a prolific editor of Greek and Latin classics that were acclaimed by scholars all over Europe. Apart from the content, this copy comes from one of the most impressive libraries of the day, that of the cleric and statesman--and probably the most powerful Frenchman of the period--Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis, Duke of Richelieu and Fronsac (1585-1642). He had ambitious political goals, chief among them the consolidation of royal power in France and the solidification of France as the preeminent state on the continent. He succeeded very well at both. At the same time, as scholar Edmond Bonnaffé notes, "the chief minister of France was also the most illustrious French collector." (He was also a great patron of the arts and founder of the Académie Française.) His library was "the most vast … [Click Below for Full Description]

VEGA, Lope de.
Brusselas: 1614. Brunet V, 1109.

SCHEINER, Christoph; TANNER, Adam.
Ingolstadt: Eder for Elisabeth Angermaria, 1614 & 1615. First edition. Hardcover.
First edition, in a beautiful contemporary binding, of Scheiner's very rare work containing the second earliest map of the moon - but the first to give topographical details - as well as the first illustrations of a telescope. It builds upon Scheiner's 1612 discovery of sunspots, made using a telescope he built himself, which led to his famous controversy with Galileo. This work discusses almost all the astronomical issues then current, especially those brought about by the newly invented telescope. There is an extensive argument against the notion of an infinite universe, illustrated by a striking full-page woodcut on p. 17 of 'Chaos infinitum ex atomis' surrounding the sphere of fixed stars. This is followed by a detailed examination of the Copernican heliocentric theory, as well as the Tychonic system, which he supported, and that of Fracastoro; the systems are illustrated by three large diagrams. Then follow discussions of the moon (including its 'secondary light'), the sun (with a full examination of sunspots), and the planets. On p. 58 is an extraordinary map of the moon, with craters and other features labelled and listed, including Mare Crisium, Mare Tranquilitatis, Mare Foecunditatis, Mare Nectaris and the crater Aristoteles. The only earlier maps of the moon are those published in Galileo's Sidereus Nuncius (1610), but these are "apparently but schematic views of what Galileo saw with his telescope, for none of the features recorded on them can be identified with certain … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Biblia arabico-latina - Psalmi].
1614. 4to. (8), 474, (6) pp. With two woodcut coats of arms on t. p. and at the end. Late 19th century half calf. First edition of this adaptation of the Psalms, set in Arabic-Latin parallel text. Printed in some 3000 copies, most of which were used for a 1619 re-issue with only the title page changed. Famous for the clarity and elegance of the typeface created by Savary de Brèves: the extensive vocalisation helped this handy quarto volume achieve immense popularity among oriental scholars throughout Europe. Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf. Balagna, L'imprimerie arabe en occident, p. 55f.); as it occasionally departs from the Vulgate (as does the translation by the Maronites Sionita and Scialac), an extensive imprimatur was necessary. - Bellarmin's Arabic catechism and the Arabic-Latin Psalter would remain the only works to leave the Typographia Savariana in Rome; the types have survived and are now in the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris. - From the library of the Biblical scholar Samuel Davidson (1806-98) with his ms. ownership to title page; binding slightly bumped, but a fine copy altogether. Hessel GERRITSZ (c. 1581-1632)
Copper engraving (professionaly restored tiny holes and two small worm-holes in the lower part, repaired short tears in the vertical fold, remargined to the plate mark, otherwise a clean copy of this rare map), 42,5 x 54,5 cm. - Amsterdam 1614 A detailed map shows the area of west Russia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia with in-set bird’s eye view of Moscow and a view of Arkhangelsk. Very rare map of Russia by Hessel Gerritsz. Gerritsz was a Dutch cartographer and publisher, considered by some experts „unquestionably the chief Dutch cartographer of the 17th century" (Johannes Keuning "Hessel Gerritsz" (1949) Imago Mundi Vol. 6, pp. 46-66). In the first years of the 17th century he started cooperating with Willem Jansz Blaeu in Amsterdam and in 1610 he opened his own printing shop. His maps were published in atlases by Janssonius and Blaeu, amongst others. As an indipendant publisher he issued his famous map of Russia. The map has a very important place in the history of Russia. As mentioned in the cartouche, the draft was made personally by the Czar of Russia Feodor II Godunov (1589 – 1605), while he was only in his mid-teens. Feodor, a son of Czar Boris Godunov, was a highly intelligent and promising young ruler of Russia, known for his fine education. He was murdered by his opponents in 1605 when he was only 16 years old, during the period of the Russian history known as „Time of Troubles". This turbulent era lasted from the death of the last Russian Csar of the Rurik Dynasty, Feodor Ivanovich, in 1598, to the establishment of the Romanov Dynasty in 1613 … [Click Below for Full Description]

496 y 497). Pérez Pastor, Bib. Madrileña, 1287. Palau 164880-1. Picatoste, 473. Hurtado, Astrología, 332.

ONGARO, Antonio
Per Vitt. Baldini, 1614. FIRST EDITION thus. 4to. ff. 8, pp. 9-40, ff. 41-48, pp. 49-306, [ii]. Roman and Italic letter. Title within architectural border with putti and heroic figures at sides, arms of the dedicatee at center, floriated woodcut initials, borders and head and tail pieces, typographical and woodcut ornaments. Feint C18 library stamp on title and second leaf of the 'Libraria Colonna' one of Italy's greatest families, on pastedown. Light occasional marginal spotting, a very good copy, crisp and clean, in dark blue paper over boards c.1800, spine gilt in bands, surface tear from upper compartment, all edges yellow. Excellent edition of Ongaro's pastoral, L'Alceo, with the first edition of Guarini's intermezzi, effectively the great poet's last work, with explanatory essays on the intermezzi and the production of the work at Ferrara in 1613 by Arsiccio. Little is known about Ongaro who died very young, shortly after the first publication of this, his only major work. He was in the service of the Farnese at Ferrara where he would have seen the first production of Tasso's L'Aminta in 1572 which had such an influence on him. Tasso's success inspired him to write the present work, though instead of using shepherds as the pastoral subject, he chose fishermen. The work was well received, if criticised for its use of coarse fishermen's language, though the beauty of its verse was recognised. It was however so closely based on L'Aminta that malicious tongues called it the "Aminta bagnato" (the wet Aminta). It was widely published well into the eighteenth century.
