Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de
Pamplona: Nicolas de Assiayn, Impressor del Reyno de Navarra, 1614. Second edition. [xvi], 391, [3] pp. Collation: ¶^8 A-2Z^8 3A-3C^8. 8vo. The rare true second edition of Cervantes' Novelas Ejemplares, a collection of 12 novellas inspired by Boccaccio and first published by Robles in Madrid in 1613, between publication of the first and second parts of Don Quixote (1605, 1615). A Madrid edition of 1614, with the imprint of Juan de la Cuesta and Francisco de Robles was long thought to be the second edition, and is identified as such by Ruis. It is in fact a piracy, variously ascribed to the Lisbon printer Antonio Alvare (vide Astrana Marín) and more recently to the the Seville printer Gabriel Ramos Bejarano (vide Jaime Moll, "Novelas ejemplares, Madrid, 1614: edición contrahecha sevillana"). The present 1614 Pamplona edition is the true second edition, with the privilege from the kingdom of Navarre granted on 11 January 1614. Cervantes' Madrid publisher, Francisco de Robles, had obtained privileges from Castille and Arragón for the 1613 first edition, published in July of that year. He was determined to combat illegal reprintings and sued booksellers in Zaragosa intending to pirate the Novelas (Marín VII, p. 74). But he was unable to stop either the indignity of the 1614 piracy (which used his own name) or this authorized 1614 Pamplona edition, printed by Nicolas de Assiayn. This edition removes the sonnet of Juan de Solís Mexia printed in the first edition. Assiayn published a second Pamplona edition in 1617.The 1613 Madrid edition is rare, known only in a handful of copie … [Click Below for Full Description]

"At nine Sylvester was enrolled in the Southampton grammar school, headed by Hadrianus Saravia, which specialized in the French language. While he later lamented leaving school after only three years, the grounding in French he received there enabled him to translate with little error the voluminous and often highly embellished writings of his literary hero, the Gascon Huguenot poet Guillaume de Saluste, sieur Du Bartas" (ODNB). Romae: ex Typographia Sauariana. 4to, pp. [8], 474, [3]; parallel text in double column (Arabic and Latin); woodcut coat-of-arms on title-p., woodcut printer's device on the antepenultimate leaf; contemporary ink marginalia on the first two leaves of the text; contemporary full vellum, manuscript titling on spine, yapp edges, page edges stained blue; the last 75 leaves with rodent nibblings in the fore-margin extending into the leaf approximately 3/8 of an inch but never approaching any text; the vellum also neatly restored at the fore-margin; 19th century bookplate of Dr. Grauff, and the bookseller's ticket of S. Wolf, Antiquare, Heidelberg. Contained in a brown cloth clamshell box, leather label on spine. "In a recent study Duverdier has shown how Savary de Breves, Ambassador of France in Constantinople from 1584 to 1606, in a crusading spirit conceived the idea of an Oriental press, so that, with the printing of religious works in Syriac and Arabic, the Christian minorities in the Levant would be better prepared to understand and accept the Roman church when their political liberation was near. He has Arabic and Syriac type cut during his stay in Rome (1608-1614) with which first Bellarmin's Catechism in Arabic was published in 1613. An Arabic Psalter was begun at the same time and published a year later. .. The Arabic typeface for this edition was probably cut by Sottile or another Italian craftsman, and is closely modeled after a Vatical manuscript of the Psalter" (Smitskamp). Included is a detailed map depicting Arabia, Persia and India by Langren. The interior has been taken from Gastaldi after Mercator's World Map of 1569, but has been given interesting improvements: 'The surprising fact about the representation of the [Arabian] peninsula is the close resemblance of the outline to that of a modern map when compared with other engraved maps of the time. There is a vague suggestion of the Qatar peninsula, which is not seen again until the nineteenth century' (Tibbets). The book is divided into four parts. Meigret was most known for writing the very first grammatical description of the French language. Due to this, his French translations are exceptionally accurate and respected. During his life, however, he struggled to find a suitable printer that would take on his work. This was because Meigret sought to simplify French spelling by focusing only on pronunciation. This was a highly unpopular move with the public. However, 19th-century linguist Charles Livet said "It is not Dubois, it is not Henri Etienne who is the father of French grammar: it is Meigret." Albrecht Dürer (1471 - 1528) was a German painter, engraver, printmaker, mathematician, and theorist from Nuremberg. His high-quality woodcuts (nowadays often called Meisterstiche or "master prints") established his reputation and influence across Europe when he was still in his twenties, and he has been conventionally regarded as the greatest artist of the Northern Renaissance. We do not find another example of this exceedingly rare title for sale worldwide. Main author: Albrecht Dürer; Louis Meigret (transl.) Del Canto, Francisco: [Peru]
Los Reyes [i.e. Lima]: Por Francisco del Canto, 1614. [4],35,28-31 [i.e. 36-39],[1],[176] leaves. Last five leaves in expert facsimile. Contemporary limp vellum. Light to moderate soiling of binding, corner of rear cover chipped. Titlepage mutilated around edges, affecting first portion of title; mounted on newer leaf. Second leaf clumsily repaired around edges, not affecting text. Trimmed closely at top, affecting text in some places. Light soiling. Good. An important Indian language work, from the first (and at the time only) press in South America, printed only twenty-eight years after the beginning of printing there, and twenty-six years before the Bay Psalm Book was published. Del Canto, the owner and operator of the only press in South America at the time, was the second printer in Peru. He acquired his press directly from Antonio Ricardo, the first printer in South America. This work begins with a grammar of the Quechua language, followed by Quechua-Spanish and Spanish-Quechua dictionaries. The book is in a handy smaller format for use in the field. Medina says this book is "extraordinariamente raro," and it is lacking from many of the great collections. This work is generally credited to Del Canto, the author of the introduction, but parts of it may be by Gonzalez Holguin, whose other publications on Peruvian Indian language were published in Lima in 1607 and 1608. Sabin attributes authorship, however, to Ludovico Bertonio. Only eight copies on OCLC. MEDINA, LIMA 58. VARGAS UGARTE 79. PALAU 17729. SABIN 5020. JCB (3)II:101. OCLC 6783843, 251190642.

(EMBLEM BOOK). ALCIATI, ANDREA
Lvgdvni: Apud Hredes Gulielmi Rouillii [Guillaume Rouille], 1614. Lvgdvni: Apud Hæredes Gulielmi Rouillii [Guillaume Rouille], 1614. This is a fine representative example of the emblem book at its highest point of popularity, from a publishing house known for its editions of emblematic literature, offered here in a presentation binding with the arms of a French nobleman. The combination of allegorical pictures and epigrams that became known as an "emblem book" was popularized by the Milanese jurist Andrea Alciati (1492-1550), who established the format for the genre: each emblem appeared on a separate page, with title or motto and image, and a text explanation below. Emblem books combined images and text to teach a moral truth in such a way that the reader's memory would grasp it, not as a formula, but as a genuine experience that would serve as an effective guide to understanding and conduct. This singular category of illustrated books exerted a strong influence on both contemporary literature and the fine arts. French lexicographer Jean-Pierre Nicéron remarked that a person's education was not complete unless he knew Alciati in this version edited by esteemed scholar Claude Mignault, which first appeared in 1571. Alciati's first book had been printed in 1531 by Chrestien Wechel in Augsburg, but by the 1540s, the main production of emblem books had shifted to Lyon, where Guillaume Rouille, Jean de Tournes, and Macé Bonhomme produced competing editions. The animated series of woodcuts appearing here was produced for our printer Rouille in 1548 by Pierre Eskrich to compet … [Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Walter Raleigh, The History of the World (1614) History of the World The History of the World: Suppressed by King James for "being too saucy in censuring Princes." This work was written by Sir Walter Raleigh, the famous English explorer, during his imprisonment in the Tower of London from 1603 to 1616. Raleigh, who had established the lost colony of Roanoke in present-day North Carolina and headed several expeditions to South America, was arrested upon the death of Queen Elizabeth and imprisoned by King James I, with whom he was highly unpopular. The History of the World was intended to outline historical events from creation to modern times, drawing on the Bible, Greek mythology, and other sources. Raleigh dedicated it to the young Prince Henry, his patron and supporter who was trying to secure his release from prison. The prince's death in 1612 discouraged Raleigh, and the book ends abruptly with the second Macedonian War instead of continuing through two more volumes as originally intended … [Click Below for Full Description]

An Arabic Psalter was begun at the same time and published a year later ... The Arabic typeface for this edition was probably cut by Sottile or another Italian craftsman, and is closely modeled after a Vatical manuscript of the Psalter" (Smitskamp). Darlow & Moule, 1641; Smitskamp, Philologia Orientalis, 33.

""A Learned English divine, and compiler of a valuable collection of travels... educated at Cambridge. In 1604 he was instituted vicar of Eastwood in Essex, but, leaving the cure of it to his brother, removed to London, the better to carry on the great work he had undertaken. He published the first volume in 1613, and the four last in 1625... His Pilgrimages, and the learned Hackluyt's Voyages, led the way to all other collections of that kind, and have been justly valued and esteemed.""--McClintock & Strong: Cycl Bibl Theol & Eccl Lit., VIII:794. This volume, though published first in 1613, in its 4th edition of 1626, always accompanies and forms the 5th volume of the authors 4 volume work published in 1625. This work ""is an entirely different work from his larger collection of 'Pilgrimes,"" of which the fourth edition of this forms a fifth or supplementary volume. The distinction between the two works is explained by the author himself in the dedication prefixed to the fourth edition of the 'Pilgrimage' in the following words: 'I had pleased his Majestie to enquire further into the different scope of my Pilgrimage, & my then presented Pilgrims, which here also for the Reader's sake I think fit to answer; that These Brethren holdin much resemblance in name, nature and feature, yet differ both in object and subject: This being mine owne in matter (though borrowed) and in some of words and method. 1614. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. 1614 German Old Master Albrecht Durer Renaissance Art Drawing Artistic Anatomy EXQUISITE translation by the famous Meigret A fascinating work of the drawing of the human figure by Albrecht Durer translated by 16th-century grammarian Louis Meigret. Main author: Albrecht Dürer; Louis Meigret (transl.) Title: Les quatre livres d'Albert Durer : peinctre & geometrien tres excellent, de la proportion des parties & pourtraicts des corps humains Published: Arnhem : Jean Jeansz, 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]
