Settala Ludovico.
Cm. 15,5, pp. (16) 260 (42). Marchio tipografico al frontespizio e bel ritratto dell'autore inciso in rame (e ripiegato) nelle preliminari. Cfr. Rota Gribaudi (21).

ZUBLER, Leonhard.
Basel, Ludwig Knig, 1614. Basel, Ludwig König, 1614. Title printed in red and black. With engr. title border, and 20 large engravings (1 full-page). 67 (i.e. 71) pp. Small 4to. 19th-century half morocco (paper cover renewed). Basel, Ludwig König, 1614. Zubler (1563-1609) was an instrument maker and mathematician in Zurich, who closely examined the central perpective and constructed corresponding instruments, some of which were the forerunners of Bramer's measuring instruments. He describes an important surveying instrument of his invention, "one of the earliest triangulation instruments" (Kiely). Zinner records that examples of Zubler's instrument are kept at the Germanisches National Museum, Nuremberg, and at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago. The full-page plate shows all the details of the measuring instruments, while the other illustrations shows meauring processes and also the military importance of surveying, e.g. to find the range for artillery. The plates are identical in the first ed. from 1607 and the present 1614 edition, which both mistakenly mention 22 illustrations in the title, and both claim to be published for the first time. The text was written in German, there was also a Latin version by Caspar Waser (1607). - Faint library stamp on title, somewhat cropped at head, some pages rehinged. - VD 17 39:121596B; Cockle 949; Berlin Katalog 1713 (the 1607 ed.); Poggendorff II, 1420; Kiely, Surveying Instruments, 224-226, 328-232 (reprod. of 3 of the plates); Zinner, Instrumente, 597. PHILIPPI, Johann
8 p.l., 438, [42] pp. (the last leaf a blank). Small thick 4to, cont. richly blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards from the workshop of Jakob Krause, upper cover with the arms of Duke Augustus of Saxe-Weissenfels (1614-80), stamped at top of panel in gilt "H H V B" & at bottom "1668," arms repeated on lower cover. Leipzig: J. Gross & C. Michael, 1667. First edition of this uncommon and interesting book on auctions, their history since antiquity, the various kinds of auctions -- "Dutch" auctions, auctions by candle, etc. -- and the legal aspects of auctions. While auctions were common in Babylonian and Roman times, they fell out of favor until the end of the 16th century when the practice revived. This book was published in Leipzig, the traditional German center for auctions from about 1670. Numerous Roman and German legal and historical documents are cited in the text. There are several references to book auctions in the text. Phillipi (1607-79), was professor of law at the University of Leipzig and held a series of prominent legal positions in the local government. He wrote extensively on legal topics. Fine copy. Bound-in after are 1) J. G. Freyer, Tractatus de solutionibus: in quo de personis solventibus, & solutum recipientibus, rebus, tempore, loco, modis ...solutionisagitur (Erfurt: Saher, 1660) and 2) J. Thomae, Tractatus de noxia animalium: continens pauperiei, pastus, edicti de animalibus ferocibus aedilitii, pignorationem item, vindictae privatae & publicae (Leipzig: Kirchner, 1653). PLUTARQUE
Brunet, IV, 738. Restaurations habiles aux coins, coiffes et bord … [Click Below for Full Description]

Without blanks A1, K3, and K4. Titlepage soiled and repaired, with the lower right quarter supplied in facsimile. Light soiling throughout. Other than loss to title- leaf, a very good copy. The second edition of Coverte's account of his voyage to the East Indies, following the first edition published in London in 1612. The author and his men left Plymouth in March 1607 aboard the Ascension and were among the first Englishmen to see the Cape of Good Hope, arriving there in July 1608. Coverte eventually reached Gujarat, where the ship ran aground while approaching Surat. Not granted permission to remain in Surat, the crew departed to various destinations. Coverte and others set out for the Moghul Court at Agra, arriving there in December 1609. He and other crew members left Agra in January 1610 "with the intention of making their way back to the Levant by the overland route. Travelling by way of Kandahar, Esfahan, and Baghdad...they reached Aleppo in December 1610 and from the coast of the Levant sailed for England. They subsequently arrived home in April 1611" (Howgego). An absorbing account presented in the form of a travel diary, Penrose described the work as a "vigorous narrative...it relates its author's reception by the Emperor Jahangir, and his tedious journey across India, Afghanistan, and Persia, and as such is one of the best examples of a travel journal that the … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLUTARQUE
[Click Below for Full Description]

"In a recent study Duverdier has shown how Savary de Breves, Ambassador of France in Constantinople from 1584 to 1606, in a crusading spirit conceived the idea of an Oriental press, so that, with the printing of religious works in Syriac and Arabic, the Christian minorities in the Levant would be better prepared to understand and accept the Roman church when their political liberation was near. He has Arabic and Syriac type cut during his stay in Rome (1608-1614) with which first Bellarmin's Catechism in Arabic was published in 1613. An Arabic Psalter was begun at the same time and published a year later . The Arabic typeface for this edition was probably cut by Sottile or another Italian craftsman, and is closely modeled after a Vatical manuscript of the Psalter" (Smitskamp).
