Paris, Toussaint Dubray 0. In 12mo (cm 13); legatura francese coeva in marocchino bordeaux con eleganti decorazioni sui piatti e sul dorso, tagli dorati (molto ben conservata); cc. (4), 166, (1), 1 bianca. [Click Below for Full Description]

"For many, Platter's fame is based on the abundance of individual observations contained in the case histories in his Observationes. . . . The Observationes contains observations in all branches of medicine. . . . It is astonishing how [Platter] could see and grasp originalities in every field" (Karcher, Platter, pp. 80-81 [our translation]; also pp. 56-87). BREREWOOD, Edward.
London: Printed for John Bill, 1614. Small quarto, bound with another work in contemporary limp vellum; boxed. First edition: Brerewood, professor of astronomy and scholar in many fields, discusses the tongues in which the liturgy is celebrated, and identifies the parts of the world where Christians live, and the other parts where 'idolaters' flourish. There are digressions on the height of mountains, the depth of the sea, and the dimensions of whales and elephants. As well as speculations on the size of the "Great Southern Continent..." there are numerous references to America, including reports on the religious practices encountered by Spanish and Portuguese explorers, a report of converts "above the Bay of California, of whom as yet, histories make so little report, that of their number I can make no estimate", and an attempt to prove that the indigenous Americans were descended from Tartar stock. Of great interest is the extended reference to "Beach", the supposed Australia of Marco Polo, the "southern continent not yet discovered" ("Beach" is an old corruption, perpetuated by Mercator, stemming from a misprint of "Locach" in the 1532 edition of Grynaeus): "But if the South or Antarctique continent, be so large, as I am verily perswaded it is (even no lesse, than that of the East before mentioned, which containeth Europe, Afrique, and Asia together) then will the Idolaters be found to surpasse all the other religions, in exceeding great proportion, for that the Inhabitants of that South continent, are Idolaters, there is no question at all (as I take it) to bee made, bo … [Click Below for Full Description]

Though the mildest of men, his whole life was spent amidst scenes of controversy and civil war. Del Canto, Francisco: [Peru]:
Los Reyes [i.e. Lima]: Por Francisco del Canto. 1614.. [4],35,28-31 [i.e. 36-39], [1],[176] leaves. Last five leaves provided in expert facsimile. Contemporary limp vellum. Light to moderate soiling to binding; corner of rear cover chipped. Titlepage mutilated around the edges, affecting first portion of title text; mounted on newer leaf. Second leaf clumsily repaired around the edges, not affecting text. Trimmed closely at the top, affecting text in some places. Light soiling. Good. An important Indian language work, from the first (and at the time only) press in South America, printed only twenty-eight years after the beginning of printing there, and twenty-six years before the Bay Psalm Book was published. Del Canto, the owner and operator of the only press in South America at the time, was only the second printer in Peru. He acquired his press directly from Antonio Ricardo, the first printer in South America. This work begins with a grammar of the Quecha language, followed by Quecha-Spanish and Spanish-Quecha dictionaries. The book is in a handy smaller format for use in the field. Medina says this work is "extraordinariamente raro," and it is lacking from many of the great collections. This work is generally credited to Del Canto, the author of the introduction, but parts of it may be by Gonzalez Holguin, whose other works on Peruvian Indian language were published in Lima in 1607 and 1608. Sabin attributes authorship, however, to Ludovico Bertonio. Only eight copies on OCLC. MEDINA (LIMA) 58. VARGAS UGARTE 79. PALAU 17729. SABIN 5020. JCB (3)II:101.

Marchand, Guillaume (1555-1624), a.k.a. "Maitre Guillaume, Fou du Roi"
s.n., S.l. (Paris?) 1614 - 8vo. Collation: A-D4, COMPLETE. 32 pp. Beautifully bound in recent half calf over marbled boards in the antique style. Blindstamps of the now-defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut First edition of this "FANTASTICAL CHRONICLE OF NONSENSE ON THE SUBJECT OF PEACE. The text presents AN INEXHAUSTIBLE CATALOGUE OF THE WILDEST NEOLOGISMS" (Mercier, La Litterature Facetieuse). The pamphlet is now very rare and was apparently suppressed upon publication according to Jules Mathorez in his bibliography of Maitre Guillaume. Until the age of 40 Gaillaume Marchand (a.k.a. Maitre Guillaume) practiced as an apothecary in Louviers, Normandy. A respected Bourgeois in his town, he was conspicuous for his exemplary piety, his devotion to the Catholic religion and his hatred of the Huguenots. In 1590, when the troops of Henri IV attacked his city, Guillaume did not hesitate to take up arms to fight them. The partisan blows to his head made him a changed man. The following year we find him as a "bouffon" in the service of the Cardinal de Bourbon, before receiving the ultimate accolade: "Fou du Roi." Maitre Guillaume never recovered from the death of Henri IV, continued their dialogue with him in the realm of shadows. Maitre Guillaume also served with distinction Henri's successor Louis XIII. Contemporary accounts suggest that he was "a dreaming half-witted fellow [.] a Roman Catholic, like [Gascon] Chicot, but he was less tolerant. He so hated the reformed religion, and the Reformation itself, that he always used the words 'ruined religion' or the 'Ruin' to show … [Click Below for Full Description]
