MARANDO, Theobaldo
Bartolomeo Merlo, Verona 1614 - FIRST EDITION small 4to. 12 unnumbered ll., A8 B4. Roman and Italic letter, beautiful four- to seven-lines woodcut foliated initials, traces of antique manuscript pagination on edges; very light water stain to some upper outer corners. A very good copy in near contemporary golden paper wrappers, almost uncut. Only early edition of a very rare collection of celebratory poems, we could trace no copies in the catalogues of the main Libraries. The work, presumably printed on the occasion of a pastoral visitation, is introduced by a dedication from the Augustinian friar Theobaldo Marano to Giovanni Battista d’Aste (‘d’Asti’?), general of the Augustinian order (‘Religio’). Marano much praises Aste for sending the ‘venerable master’ friar Gasparo Pagni, or ‘Panni’, as a preacher to the church of S. Eufemia in Verona; he enthusiastically celebrates the virtues of the friar, who is said to give memorable sermons and lectures. All the community wants to express sincere gratitude to Pagni, and many lyrics have been composed for him, but Marano collected only the best ones in order to make them ‘eternal through printing’ (‘fatte eterne col mez[z]o delle stampe’). According to the literary conventions of the time, these poems are short and enriched with puns and rhetoric figures, in order to portray the subject as an almost mythical character: his words are compared to holy flames, milk and ambrosia, he makes the sea of sin less frightful, because in his preaching he is accompanied by f … [Click Below for Full Description]

Del Canto, Francisco: [Peru]
Los Reyes [i.e. Lima]: Por Francisco del Canto, 1614. [4],35,28-31 [i.e. 36-39],[1],[176] leaves. Last five leaves in expert facsimile. Contemporary limp vellum. Light to moderate soiling of binding, corner of rear cover chipped. Titlepage mutilated around edges, affecting first portion of title; mounted on newer leaf. Second leaf clumsily repaired around edges, not affecting text. Trimmed closely at top, affecting text in some places. Light soiling. Good. An important Indian language work, from the first (and at the time only) press in South America, printed only twenty-eight years after the beginning of printing there, and twenty-six years before the Bay Psalm Book was published. Del Canto, the owner and operator of the only press in South America at the time, was the second printer in Peru. He acquired his press directly from Antonio Ricardo, the first printer in South America. This work begins with a grammar of the Quechua language, followed by Quechua-Spanish and Spanish-Quechua dictionaries. The book is in a handy smaller format for use in the field. Medina says this book is "extraordinariamente raro," and it is lacking from many of the great collections. This work is generally credited to Del Canto, the author of the introduction, but parts of it may be by Gonzalez Holguin, whose other publications on Peruvian Indian language were published in Lima in 1607 and 1608. Sabin attributes authorship, however, to Ludovico Bertonio. Only eight copies on OCLC. MEDINA, LIMA 58. VARGAS UGARTE 79. PALAU 17729. SABIN 5020. JCB (3)II:101. OCLC 6783843, 251190642.

Alcasar (Ludovici ab)
Antverpiae (Anvers), Apud Ioannem Keerbergium, 1614. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Borba de Moraes, pp. 826-827; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 361; Sabin 89450; STCN (2 complete copies of present issue & 4 of issue without Hondius's name). Scarce, first Latin edition (in the same year as the first edition in the original Dutch) of one of the bestsellers of illustrated 17th-century travel literature, describing one of the most famous early voyages around the world by Joris van Spilbergen, the veteran Dutch East Indies naval officer-turned-pirate, undertaken from 1614 to 1618. A short survey of another of the most important early voyages around the world, by Schouten and Le Maire in the years 1615 to 1617, is added at the end, with drop-title "Navigationes Australes". It reports Le Maire's proof that Tierra del Fuego is an island and his discovery of what is still called the Strait of Le Maire, an alternative route to the Pacific. In 1614 the VOC commissioned Spilbergen to sail to the Moluccas with nearly 700 men. Despite the commercial nature of his expedition, Spilbergen's six vessels were heavily armed, anticipating encounters with silver-laden Spanish vessels. Spilbergen spent two years calling at various Spanish and Portuguese ports along both coasts of South America, failing to capture any great amounts of silver or silk from Manila, but burning several settlements and emerging triumphant from a naval skirmish just south of Lima.By contrast, Le Maire's less mercenary expedition resulted in important discoveries; his exploration of Tierra del Fuego and the Tuamotou Archipelago called into doubt the existence of a massive southern continent (until its exis … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Lon Techener, Bibliothque champenoise, 1630). Saffroy, I, 6908. Bel exemplaire.

ONGARO Antonio
Per Vitt. Baldini, Ferrara, 1614. FIRST EDITION thus. 4to. ff. 8, pp. 9-40, ff. 41-48, pp. 49-306, [ii]. Roman and Italic letter. Title within architectural border with putti and heroic figures at sides, arms of the dedicatee at center, floriated woodcut initials, borders and head and tail pieces, typographical and woodcut ornaments. Feint C18 library stamp on title and second leaf of the ‘Libraria Colonna’ one of Italy’s greatest families, on pastedown. Light occasional marginal spotting, a very good copy, crisp and clean, in dark blue paper over boards c.1800, spine gilt in bands, surface tear from upper compartment, all edges yellow. Excellent edition of Ongaro’s pastoral, L’Alceo, with the first edition of Guarini’s intermezzi, effectively the great poet’s last work, with explanatory essays on the intermezzi and the production of the work at Ferrara in 1613 by Arsiccio. Little is known about Ongaro who died very young, shortly after the first publication of this, his only major work. He was in the service of the Farnese at Ferrara where he would have seen the first production of Tasso’s L’Aminta in 1572 which had such an influence on him. Tasso’s success inspired him to write the present work, though instead of using shepherds as the pastoral subject, he chose fishermen. The work was well received, if criticised for its use of coarse fishermen's language, though the beauty of its verse was recognised. It was however so closely based on L’Aminta that malicious tongues called it the "Aminta bagnato" (the wet Aminta). It was widely published well into the eighteenth centur … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Nürnberg), 2. Dezember 1614. - Einblattdruck. 33 x 42 cm. Ansonsten droht Strafe. - Unbeschnittenes, sehr breitrandiges Exemplar des seltenen Dekrets!

[HOLSTEYN Pieter the younger].
Delicate watercolour of two grape hyacinths by the Dutch watercolour painter and engraver Pieter Holsteyn de Jonge (1614-1673). Holsteyn made many drawings of plants, birds and insects which were often composed in albums. Some of those albums are still intact and supplied with a title-page by the artist himself and as a result many of the drawings in those albums were not signed. These grape hyacinths were in such an album, which was later taken to pieces. With certificate from Dr. S. Segal, Amsterdam. In very good condition.

PLATTER, Felix.
Basel: Ludwig König for Conrad Waldkirch, 1614. First edition. A fine copy of this important medical work by one of the foremost pathologists of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. It contains "the first known case report of the death from hypertrophy of the thymus (in an infant) and an account of a meningioma" (Norman). "The work also contains the first mention of the thickening of the palmer fascia which results in retraction of the fingers and later called Dupuytren's contracture". (Heirs of Hippocrates). Norman 1716; Heirs of Hippocrates 373; G&M 3789 (endocrinology), 4297.9 (the earliest book listed on orthopaedics), and 4511.1 (neurology). A disciple of Eustachi, Falloppio and Vesalius, Platter was one of the foremost pathologists of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, occupying a place midway between Fernel (1497-1558) and Bonet (1620-89). "Platter proposed a classification of diseases based on symptoms, a system very different from that followed by contemporary practitioners. He performed over 300 dissections, making numerous significant pathological observations, including sublingual calculi, giantism, intestinal parasites, and cystic liver and kidneys associated with terminal anasarca. Platter also made the first attempt to classify mental diseases, grouping them under mental weakness (caused by heredity, trauma or physical illness), mental consternation Oistlessness, stupor, paralysis, agitation or catalepsy), deep sleep (comatose or torpid states) and mental alienation. He gave one of the earliest accurate clinical descriptions of cretinism … [Click Below for Full Description]
