PANTERA Pantero
1614. in - 4, ff. Bell'esemplare.

LAMBARD, William.
London: Company of Stationers, 1614. Two works bound together, small octavo; title, 634, [88] pp.; 94 pp. (Duties of Constables); contemporary limp vellum with faint manuscript lettering to spine. A handsome compendium of two early legal manuals: these early seventeenth-century handbooks of common law were prepared for local magistrates, at the time known as Justices of the Peace. The Eirenarcha was written by English magistrate and luminary William Lambard (1536-1601); the work is remarkable for its clarity, easy style and use of pragmatic precedent. The author was a Justice of the Peace for Kent and used his considerable personal experience to produce a common law handbook in comprehensible English free from tortured legalese. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states the Eirenarcha is 'written in a clear and unaffected style, this manual remained for a long time the standard authority'.In seventeenth-century England local magistrates were sourced from landholders and the aristocracy, many of whom were unfamiliar with legal terminology. The Eirenarcha was written for this audience, and the result is an amazing insight into everyday life and law in Elizabethan England (the book was first published in 1581 and remained substantially unchanged through later editions). Witchcraft prohibitions exist alongside modern laws such as those regarding concealed pistols, while a strong anti-Catholic theme is evident throughout. Title-page discoloured with some loss of the fore-edge, neatly laid down, preliminary leaves thumbed, frayed at corners and generally a bit damped, la … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUNSTER, SEBASTIAN.
Basle. [1614]. Black and white woodcut map of the world, relief shown pictorially, decorative border, text on verso: Die erste Landtafel..., printed surface measures 32 x 36cm and sheet 33.3 x 42cm, a 2 - 2.5cm strip of contemporary paper runs along lower edge the whole measuring 35 x 42cm. Browning, surface a little abraded in two small places. Die Ernst General Tafel... was first published in Munster's Cosmographia in 1544. Cosmographia, a very early German description of the world, was a very popular work running to many editions in German as well as translations into Latin, French, English, Italian and Czech. This interesting depiction of the world as seen from the perspective of information available in the 16th century shows the vast expanse of Terra Australis Non Dum Cognita (the southern land not yet known) along the bottom of the map. The nomenclature of Marco Polo is used extensively on the map including on the two northern pointing peninsulas, roughly where Australia is today the words Beach, Lucaoh and Maletur are printed on one and above the second, Java Minor. Persia, India and Orientalis are shown as regions in Asia with Mongol, China, Cathai (a term used by Marco Polo for northern China), Quinsai (modern day Hangzhou described by Marco Polo as "without fail the most important city and the best there is in all the world"), Japan, Calecut (modern day Kozhikode in the Indian State of Kerala), Sumatra and Java also named. Borba de Moraes notes, "The narrative of the journey, and all the events, is the principal printed French source that exists about this tentative colonization of the north of Brazil. Although not endowed with the spontaneity and the literary talent of Yves d'Evreux, Claude d'Abbeville gives us valuable … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jarric, Pierre de:
Bordeaux: Par S. Millanges, 1608, 1610, 1614. Three volumes. Titlepages printed in red and black. Engraved title in second volume. [12],699,[17]; [8],699,[41]; [12],1067,[35]pp. Small quarto. Contemporary vellum over boards, leather ties. Bookplate on front pastedowns. Some light soiling to second volume. Minor scattered foxing. Very good. First edition. One of the major early histories of western endeavor in the Orient and Brazil, and rare, the third volume more so than the first two. Pierre de Jarric (1566-1617) was a Jesuit writer and professor in Bordeaux. Being unable to join the missionary efforts of the Jesuits in the field, he elected instead to put his pen to good use on their behalf. The result was the present work, which records the order's efforts in Brazil and the East Indies. Jarric had at first simply intended to translate Luis de Guzman's HISTORIA DE LAS MISSIONES. (Alcala de Henares, 1601), but instead decided to expand upon that work. His labor took many years and in order to keep his material up to date he entered into correspondence with, among others, Father Fernao Guerreiro who was producing a famous series of annual reports on Jesuit business in the East, and who published a summary of those accounts in Lisbon in 1605. This led Jarric to conceive instead a broader-based history, but from a more secular point of view than either Guzman or Guerreiro. Because of his diligence, the work contains much useful information on the colonial and missionary activities of Europe, particularly the Portuguese. The second volume contains important American references … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARANDO, Theobaldo
Bartolomeo Merlo, Verona 1614 - FIRST EDITION small 4to. 12 unnumbered ll., A8 B4. Roman and Italic letter, beautiful four- to seven-lines woodcut foliated initials, traces of antique manuscript pagination on edges; very light water stain to some upper outer corners. A very good copy in near contemporary golden paper wrappers, almost uncut. Only early edition of a very rare collection of celebratory poems, we could trace no copies in the catalogues of the main Libraries. The work, presumably printed on the occasion of a pastoral visitation, is introduced by a dedication from the Augustinian friar Theobaldo Marano to Giovanni Battista d’Aste (‘d’Asti’?), general of the Augustinian order (‘Religio’). Marano much praises Aste for sending the ‘venerable master’ friar Gasparo Pagni, or ‘Panni’, as a preacher to the church of S. Eufemia in Verona; he enthusiastically celebrates the virtues of the friar, who is said to give memorable sermons and lectures. All the community wants to express sincere gratitude to Pagni, and many lyrics have been composed for him, but Marano collected only the best ones in order to make them ‘eternal through printing’ (‘fatte eterne col mez[z]o delle stampe’). According to the literary conventions of the time, these poems are short and enriched with puns and rhetoric figures, in order to portray the subject as an almost mythical character: his words are compared to holy flames, milk and ambrosia, he makes the sea of sin less frightful, because in his preaching he is accompanied by f … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Nürnberg), 2. Dezember 1614. Einblattdruck. 33 x 42 cm. Ansonsten droht Strafe. - Unbeschnittenes, sehr breitrandiges Exemplar des seltenen Dekrets! Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Del Canto, Francisco: [Peru]
Los Reyes [i.e. Lima]: Por Francisco del Canto, 1614. [4],35,28-31 [i.e. 36-39],[1],[176] leaves. Last five leaves in expert facsimile. Contemporary limp vellum. Light to moderate soiling of binding, corner of rear cover chipped. Titlepage mutilated around edges, affecting first portion of title; mounted on newer leaf. Second leaf clumsily repaired around edges, not affecting text. Trimmed closely at top, affecting text in some places. Light soiling. Good. An important Indian language work, from the first (and at the time only) press in South America, printed only twenty-eight years after the beginning of printing there, and twenty-six years before the Bay Psalm Book was published. Del Canto, the owner and operator of the only press in South America at the time, was the second printer in Peru. He acquired his press directly from Antonio Ricardo, the first printer in South America. This work begins with a grammar of the Quechua language, followed by Quechua-Spanish and Spanish-Quechua dictionaries. The book is in a handy smaller format for use in the field. Medina says this book is "extraordinariamente raro," and it is lacking from many of the great collections. This work is generally credited to Del Canto, the author of the introduction, but parts of it may be by Gonzalez Holguin, whose other publications on Peruvian Indian language were published in Lima in 1607 and 1608. Sabin attributes authorship, however, to Ludovico Bertonio. Only eight copies on OCLC. MEDINA, LIMA 58. VARGAS UGARTE 79. PALAU 17729. SABIN 5020. JCB (3)II:101. OCLC 6783843, 251190642.

Alcasar (Ludovici ab)
Antverpiae (Anvers), Apud Ioannem Keerbergium, 1614. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
