LAMBARD, William.
London: Company of Stationers, 1614. Two works bound together, small octavo; title, 634, [88] pp.; 94 pp. (Duties of Constables); contemporary limp vellum with faint manuscript lettering to spine. A handsome compendium of two early legal manuals: these early seventeenth-century handbooks of common law were prepared for local magistrates, at the time known as Justices of the Peace. The Eirenarcha was written by English magistrate and luminary William Lambard (1536-1601); the work is remarkable for its clarity, easy style and use of pragmatic precedent. The author was a Justice of the Peace for Kent and used his considerable personal experience to produce a common law handbook in comprehensible English free from tortured legalese. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states the Eirenarcha is 'written in a clear and unaffected style, this manual remained for a long time the standard authority'.In seventeenth-century England local magistrates were sourced from landholders and the aristocracy, many of whom were unfamiliar with legal terminology. The Eirenarcha was written for this audience, and the result is an amazing insight into everyday life and law in Elizabethan England (the book was first published in 1581 and remained substantially unchanged through later editions). Witchcraft prohibitions exist alongside modern laws such as those regarding concealed pistols, while a strong anti-Catholic theme is evident throughout. Title-page discoloured with some loss of the fore-edge, neatly laid down, preliminary leaves thumbed, frayed at corners and generally a bit damped, la … [Click Below for Full Description]

MUNSTER, SEBASTIAN....
Basle. [1614]. Black and white woodcut map of the world, relief shown pictorially, decorative border, text on verso: Die erste Landtafel..., printed surface measures 32 x 36cm and sheet 33.3 x 42cm, a 2 - 2.5cm strip of contemporary paper runs along lower edge the whole measuring 35 x 42cm. Browning, surface a little abraded in two small places. Die Ernst General Tafel... was first published in Munster's Cosmographia in 1544. Cosmographia, a very early German description of the world, was a very popular work running to many editions in German as well as translations into Latin, French, English, Italian and Czech. This interesting depiction of the world as seen from the perspective of information available in the 16th century shows the vast expanse of Terra Australis Non Dum Cognita (the southern land not yet known) along the bottom of the map. The nomenclature of Marco Polo is used extensively on the map including on the two northern pointing peninsulas, roughly where Australia is today the words Beach, Lucaoh and Maletur are printed on one and above the second, Java Minor. Persia, India and Orientalis are shown as regions in Asia with Mongol, China, Cathai (a term used by Marco Polo for northern China), Quinsai (modern day Hangzhou described by Marco Polo as "without fail the most important city and the best there is in all the world"), Japan, Calecut (modern day Kozhikode in the Indian State of Kerala), Sumatra and Java also named. HOLSTEYN Pieter the younger].
, . . Delicate watercolour of two grape hyacinths by the Dutch watercolour painter and engraver Pieter Holsteyn de Jonge (1614-1673). Holsteyn made many drawings of plants, birds and insects which were often composed in albums. Some of those albums are still intact and supplied with a title-page by the artist himself and as a result many of the drawings in those albums were not signed. These grape hyacinths were in such an album, which was later taken to pieces. With certificate from Dr. S. Segal, Amsterdam. In very good condition.

ABBEVILLE, Claude d'.
Paris: François Huby, 1614. First edition, second issue, of the principal printed source for the French colonization of north Brazil, for the customs, religion and astronomy of the local Tupinambá Indians, and for the natural history of the region. "C'est le texte le plus important - avec celui d'Yves d'Evreux - non seulement sur la tentative de colonisation française dans l'île de Maranhão, mais surtout pour les renseignements précieux qu'il fournit sur 'les singularitez admirables et les moeurs merveilleuses des Indiens'" (Duviols). "The narrative of the journey, and all the events, is the principal printed French source that exists about this tentative colonization of the north of Brazil. Although not endowed with the spontaneity and the literary talent of Yves d'Evreux, Claude d'Abbeville gives us valuable information concerning the religion and 'astronomy' of the Tupis, not to be found in any other writings" (Borba de Moraes). This is the first and most important written account of the Capuchin mission to Maranhão, of which this is the earliest known mention (Sabin). The work was considered rare a century ago by Leclerc ("un ouvrage aussi important que rare"). ABPC/RBH list only a single complete copy at auction in the last 45 years (Sotheby's New York, 12 November 2007, lot 21, $40,000 - also the second issue). The first issue was published earlier in 1614; this second issue has a number of corrections to the main text and a lengthier index at the end (see Borba). The island of Maranhão, uninhabited by the Portuguese, and an entryway to the Amazon, had been discovered … [Click Below for Full Description]

Del Canto, Francisco: [Peru]:
Los Reyes [i.e. Lima]: Por Francisco del Canto. 1614. [4],35,28-31 [i.e. 36-39],[1],[176] leaves. Last five leaves in expert facsimile. Contemporary limp vellum. Light to moderate soiling of binding, corner of rear cover chipped. Titlepage mutilated around edges, affecting first portion of title; mounted on newer leaf. Second leaf clumsily repaired around edges, not affecting text. Trimmed closely at top, affecting text in some places. Light soiling. Good. An important Indian language work, from the first (and at the time only) press in South America, printed only twenty-eight years after the beginning of printing there, and twenty-six years before the Bay Psalm Book was published. Del Canto, the owner and operator of the only press in South America at the time, was the second printer in Peru. He acquired his press directly from Antonio Ricardo, the first printer in South America. This work begins with a grammar of the Quechua language, followed by Quechua-Spanish and Spanish- Quechua dictionaries. The book is in a handy smaller format for use in the field. Medina says this book is "extraordinariamente raro," and it is lacking from many of the great collections. This work is generally credited to Del Canto, the author of the introduction, but parts of it may be by Gonzalez Holguin, whose other publications on Peruvian Indian language were published in Lima in 1607 and 1608. Sabin attributes authorship, however, to Ludovico Bertonio. Only eight copies on OCLC. MEDINA, LIMA 58. VARGAS UGARTE 79. PALAU 17729. SABIN 5020. JCB (3)II:101. OCLC 6783843, 251190642.

PONTANUS, Johannes Isaac.
Amsterdam, Judocus Hondius, 1614.4to. Contemporary blind-tooled vellum (1 hinge cracked but holding). With 2 printer's marks, 6 (of 7) folding maps and plans and 51 large engraved maps and views in the text. (8),360,(6) pp.First Dutch edition; first published in Latin in Amsterdam in 1611. - One of the earliest descriptions of Amsterdam, its history and institutions. Of special importance are the accounts of Dutch explorations in the East-Indies and Africa, and reports of the attempts to find a North-East passage, including the account of the third voyage of Willem Barentsz. to Nova Zembla (1596-97) during which voyage Barendsz and his crew members were iced in and forced to winter over in Novaya Zemlya in a wooden cabin ('Het behouden Huis').The map of the Polar regions illustrating this third voyage of Willem Barentsz. is also important as an Americanum in giving the results of Hudson's first two voyages (1607-1608) for the Muscovy Company of London. The appearance of the map by Hondius was doubtless the result of Hudson's employment by the Dutch East India Company in 1609. Pontanus also describes in detail the activities on the Amsterdam stock- and commodity markets, one of the earliest in the world and at that time the most important one. - (Stamp on title-page; map of Holland missing). - Scarce Dutch edition. Willem BLAEU Amsterdam, circa 1640. Copper engraving with outline colour (decorative recent colour, in a good condition), 38,5 x 50 cm.
- One of the most importing maps from the history of America, based on Adrien Blockwith's map from 1614, showing Manhattan as an island. It embraces the area between Virginia, past New York and Long Island to Cape Code, New England, and Quebec. The Blaeu Family: The Leading Cartographers of the 17th Century Willem Jansz Blaeu (1571-1638) was, more than any other figure, responsible for the ascension of Dutch cartography to a globally dominant position. Blaeu, originally from Alkmaar, north of Amsterdam, got his start while serving as an apprentice to the legendary Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe at his observatory of Uranienborg, from 1594 to 1596. Upon Willem’s return to the Netherlands, he started a business making charts, globes and nautical instruments. His timing was impeccable, as the Dutch economy, based on maritime trade, was booming and there was an insatiable demand for high quality sea charts and nautical kit. Notably, in 1596, the Dutch made their first voyage to the East Indies, which led the establishment of the Dutch East India Company in 1602. The VOC would be one of Blaeu’s anchor clients and in 1633 he was appointed the Company’s official hydrographer. Blaeu’s sea atlas of European waters, Het Licht der Zee-vaert (1608) was revolutionary, being the first broadly accurate maritime atlas. He went on to create magnificent wall maps, large-format charts and eventually terrestrial atlases, all decorated with the finest Dutch Baroque artistry. In particular, the Pascaarte van alle de Zecusten van Europa (1621) helped to establish Blaeu’s s … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Biblia arabico-latina - Psalmi].
1614. 4to. (8), 474, (6) pp. With two woodcut coats of arms on t. p. and at the end. Late 19th century half calf. First edition of this adaptation of the Psalms, set in Arabic-Latin parallel text. Printed in some 3000 copies, most of which were used for a 1619 re-issue with only the title page changed. Famous for the clarity and elegance of the typeface created by Savary de Brèves: the extensive vocalisation helped this handy quarto volume achieve immense popularity among oriental scholars throughout Europe. Formerly it was assumed that the type design was based on specimens Savary had seen during his time as French envoy at Constantinople; today his probable model is believed to be a calligraphical manuscript from Qannubin, preserved in the Bibliotheca Vaticana. The cutting and founding of the types were done in Rome, in collaboration with Stefano Paolini, an experienced printer formerly of the Typographia Medicea. The Psalms' text is based on a manuscript Savary de Brèves had bought in Jerusalem (cf. Balagna, L'imprimerie arabe en occident, p. 55f.); as it occasionally departs from the Vulgate (as does the translation by the Maronites Sionita and Scialac), an extensive imprimatur was necessary. - Bellarmin's Arabic catechism and the Arabic-Latin Psalter would remain the only works to leave the Typographia Savariana in Rome; the types have survived and are now in the archives of the Imprimerie Nationale in Paris. - From the library of the Biblical scholar Samuel Davidson (1806-98) with his ms. ownership to title page; binding slightly bumped, but a fine copy altogether.
