By way of India he sailed for Muscat in January 1623, from where crossed the Arabian Gulf to Basra, continuing overland to Aleppo, arriving in Europe in 1626. Pinto, Fernão Mendes (c.1509?1583)
x+428 pages. Quarto (11 1/2" x 8") bound in original leather binding with raised bands and gilt label to spine. Edited by Antonio Tenreiro. In double column pages issued without map. First published in 1614.Fernão Mendes Pinto was a Portuguese explorer and writer. His exploits are known through the posthumous publication of his memoir Pilgrimage Peregrinação in 1614, an autobiographical work whose truthfulness is nearly impossible to assess. The tale of his adventures was written after the fact, according to Pinto's memories of the events, and for that reason it may be open to doubt as a completely accurate historical source. However, it well documents the impact of the Asian civilizations on the Europeans and constitutes a perfectly realistic analysis of Portuguese action in the Orient, far more realistic than the one made by Luís de Camões in The Lusiads. The most controversial of his claims is that of having been the first European to land in Japan and the introduction of the arquebus. Despite the impossibility of proving these specific assertions, there is little doubt that Pinto was among the first Europeans in Japan, and therefore his account may be considered more reliable than other books describing this period that were written long afterwards. Another controversial claim, that he fought in Java against the Muslims, has been analyzed by various historians. The Dutch historian P. A. Tiele, who wrote in 1880, did not believe Pinto was present during the campaign, but rather that he wrote his information from secondhand sources. Even so, Tiele admits Pinto's account c … [Click Below for Full Description]

LIPSIUS, Justus [1547-1606]
Antwerp: Ex Officina Plantiniana, Apud Viduam & Filios Joannis Moreti, 1614, and 1605, 1605. First work, "De Militia Romana": Pp. 397, [7] index. With 13 full-, half-, and quarter-page copper engravings (1 folding), Plantin's woodcut device, initials and several woodcut textual illustrations. Second work, "Poliorceticon": Pp. 219, [7] index. 36 full- and half-page engravings, woodcut printer's devices on title and last leaf, woodcut initials and ornaments. Bound in contemporary vellum, rebacked with original ink-lettered spine laid down, large blind-stamped arabesque centrepiece on covers. Brownish stain on rear cover, leaves lightly toned, noticeable offsetting from some plates, but overall a nice clean copy. An early combined edition of the Flemish humanist and Latin scholar, Justus Lipsius's two most important treatises on Roman military history. "De Militia Romana", first published in 1595, is a commentary on Polybius's "History", with the Greek text and a parallel Latin translation. "Poliorcetica" (1599) is a study of the Roman machinery of war. Both are embellished with the fine engravings of Peeter vander Borcht and Theodore Galle. In addition to these works, Lipsius produced critical editions of Vallerius Maximus, Vellius Paterculus, Seneca, and the younger Pliny, but he was most highly regarded for his editions of Tacitus (1574, 1600), whose work he knew so well that he "offered to repeat any passage with a dagger at his breast, to be used against him if his memory failed him". (Sandys II, 303).. Vellum. Very Good. Quarto.

SPILBERGEN, Joris van and Jacob Le MAIRE.
1614. Borba de Moraes, pp. 826-827; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 361; Sabin 89450; STCN (2 complete copies of present issue & 4 of issue without Hondius's name). Spilbergen spent two years calling at various Spanish and Portuguese ports along both coasts of South America, failing to capture any great amounts of silver or silk from Manila, but burning several settlements and emerging triumphant from a naval skirmish just south of Lima.By contrast, Le Maire's less mercenary expedition resulted in important discoveries; his exploration of Tierra del Fuego and the Tuamotou Archipelago called into doubt the existence of a massive southern continent (until it … [Click Below for Full Description]
