Antonio Neri
Firenze, nella stamperia de' Giunti, 1612. Volume in -4o, pp. [8], 114, [6]. [Click Below for Full Description]

ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527–1598).
[Antwerp: ca 1612]. Single sheet (17 x 22 inches, full margins showing the plate mark). Three fine engraved maps, on a single engraved sheet, of Peru and Central America, Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, and Guatemala, the titles within fine mannerist strapwork cartouches in each map, the Pacific ocean decorated with a large galleon and a sailboat, all with fine modern hand-colouring in full, Italian text on verso. "This is one of the very few maps printed in the sixteenth century that was based upon original Spanish sources.... THE FIRST REGIONAL MAP OF THE SOUTH-EASTERN PORTION OF NORTH AMERICA... its influence was considerable" (Burden 57). The later Italian edition of this map, first published in 1584.The map records the discoveries of Hernando de Soto's expedition of 1539-1543. Drawn by the royal Spanish cosmographer, Geronimo de Chaves, who had access to first-hand information from the latest discoveries by Spanish explorers, it is one of the very few maps printed in the sixteenth century that was based upon original Spanish sources. Generally the Spanish were very protective of their knowledge of the Americas, a considerable source of their wealth. Based on de Soto's manuscript, Chaves's La Florida was the earliest printed map of the Gulf Coast from Florida to Texas, and is usually considered the first map to delineate any part of the interior of the present-day United States. The plate contains two other maps of similar Spanish regions of influence, Peruvviae and Guastecan (parts of present day Peru and Guatemala), the latter combining with La Florida to exten … [Click Below for Full Description]

NERI, Antonio (1576-1614)
Florence, Giunta, 1612. 4to (212 x 145 mm), pp [viii] 114 [6], with woodcut printer's device on title and several woodcut initials; some occasional slight spotting, a very attractive, crisp copy in contemporary limp Italian vellum.First edition of the first book devoted to glassmaking.'Neri is remembered only for L'arte vetraria (1612), a little book in which many, although by no means all, of the closely guarded secrets of glassmaking were printed for the first time. He recommended that glass be made from rocchetta (a fairly pure sodium sesquicarbonate from the Near East) and tarso, which he described as a kind of marble but which must have been some form of silica. He did not indicate the source of the necessary proportion of lime. The main part of the text deals with the coloring of glass with metallic oxides to give not only clear and uniform colors but also various veined effects. There are chapters on making lead glass of high refractive index and enamel (opaque) glass by the addition of tin oxide.'Almost nothing is known with certainty about Neri, except that his father, Jacopo, was a physician; that Neri was ordained a priest before 1601; and that he led a wandering life. He appears to have learned the art of glassmaking at Murano, near Venice, and to have continued his studies of this and other chemical arts in the Low Countries' (DSB).Neri began as an experimenter in the arts of glassmaking with Niccolo Landi at the house of Don Antonio dei Medici, son of the Grand Duke Francesco, near the Piazza San Marco. Don Antonio, who was interested in alchemy, had a laborat … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHRISTIANITY IN JAPAN)
A fascinating and important series of government documents which fall into the general category of shumon aratame cho ("register of religious investigations") which were kept, listing the names, ages, and relationship to the heads of households for individuals in villages and towns throughout Japan. Christianity was outlawed in Japan in 1612 but continued secretly, mostly in southwestern Japan, near Nagasaki. Following the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637-38, there were renewed efforts to exterminate Christianity on the Japanese mainland. Registers, such as these, began to be compiled in the 1660s, which required all subjects to officially register with a Buddhist temple, and also that every year every head of household had to report to his village headman or equivalent official that no one in his family was a Christian. As each village headman or other local/regional official reported in, each domain totaled the figures, and recorded a total number of people in the domain. These registers have proven to be important and useful documents, quite akin to census reports. 1. Manuscript on paper entitled "Kirishitan sensaku shumon cho" [trans.: "Documents of an Investigation regarding Christianity and individual recantations"], 47 folding leaves, large 8vo (283 x 210 mm.), later wrappers, new stitching. Conimbricae (Coimbra), Didacum Gomez de Loureyro, 1612. Fol. Inscr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bacon, Francis
London: [William Jaggard] for John Jaggard, 1612. Second Jaggard edition, second issue with G7,8 canceled with addition of signatures H-O. Woodcut headpiece and printer's ornaments on title and "Of the Colours" section title, woodcut initials. [220] pp. Collation: A-F^8 G^8 (--G7,8) H-O^8. Small 8vo. Huth-Pirie Copy of the 1612 Jaggard Printing of Bacon's Essayes. The second Jaggard edition of the Essayes of statesman and philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Jaggard used his 1606 edition of the Essayes, which contained the original 10 essays of the first edition, as a model for this 1612 printing. When a new edition by Beale, expanded from 10 to 38 essays, appeared in 1612, Jaggard canceled the final two leaves (G7,8) and expanded the work to include the full compliment of essays. Jaggard made no entry of this or his 1606 and 1613 editions of the Essayes in the Stationers' Register, and so it has been customary to regard his editions as piracies. Jackson gently disputes this notion in the note to Pforzheimer 29, suggesting that a later transfer of rights to Jaggard's widow in 1624, as well as the silence of Hopper and Beale (who did register their rights with the Stationers' Company), argues for Jaggard having some right to the Essayes. "In some manner, therefore, Jaggard must have himself secured 'rights' which the Stationers' Company regarded as transferable even though not previously entered in the Register" (Pforzheimer). In any case, a rare edition: we trace only this copy at auction. The Essayes, which went into numerous editions in the author's lifetime and eventua … [Click Below for Full Description]

ORTELIUS, Abraham
1612. unbound. very good(+). Engraving. Image measures 14" x 19", sheet measures 19" x 23". This stunning 1612 map by Abraham Ortelius depicts the Western Hemisphere. At the time it was issued, the coastal areas of the New World had been fairly well explored, and Europeans were just beginning settlement and colonization. It is notable for depicting Spanish and Portuguese colonies in high detail, for these powers were notoriously protective of their geographical surveys. This is the first state of the third plate engraved for Ortelius's landmark map of the New World. It is distinguished from the first two plates by the lack of the bulge to the southwest coast of South America. Several other cartographic enhancements are apparent on closer inspections. Abraham Ortelius (1527--1598), a Flemish cartographer and geographer, is widely regarded as one of the important and influential cartographers in history. He is known for his "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which was the first modern atlas. Very hard to find in black and white.

VERJUS, Antoine de.
Cf. F. Vermote, The role of urban real estate in Jesuit finances and networks between Europe and China, 1612-1778 (2013). Signed autograph letter written by Antoine Verjus (1632-1706), Parisian Jesuit procurator for the Indian and Chinese missions from 1678 to 1702 and, on the evidence of the present letter still in 1703. He reports on various Jesuits who have left for China, notes the importance of the work and the honour it has brought to others (explicitly noting the Duchess of Alba), and appears to be seeking patronage. In the 1690s Verjus had corresponded with Leibniz and helped him establish contacts in China. He spent much of his career attempting to establish a safer and more reliable connection between Europe and China. He distrusted the motives of his colleagues in other European countries, even fellow Jesuits, and succeeded in diverting funding for missions from Lisbon to Paris. He found much support in Germany, however, especially the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Ferdinand von Fürstenberg. "Verjus' correspondence ... illustrates his pivotal role in reshaping Jesuit transport and communication networks." (Vermote p. 32). The letter was formerly folded horizontally and vertically, probably for sending, and one corner is slightly damaged with no loss of text. In very good condition. An important primary source on French Jesuit missionary work in China and it financing.

London England: The first quarto edition of the King James Bible 1612 THE HOLY BIBLE. CONTEINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW. NEWLY TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINALL TONGUES. London: Robert Barker, 1612-13. 4to. A8, A-Zzz8, [A]-[M]8. Lacking Kkk3-4, being two leaves from the Apocrypha (Esdras); a few leaves of Psalms possibly supplied from another copy. [BOUND WITH] Genealogies by John Speed: A-D4, E2, F2, including double-page map of Canaan. Bound at front, following a defective and partial book of common prayer. [BOUND WITH] THE BOOKE OF PSALMS, COLLECTED INTO ENGLISH MEETRE... London, 1614. A-G8, H7 (lacking H8.) Bound after the Bible. **** The whole bound in modern calf with spine lettered in gilt. Contents with occasional soiling, typical age-toning, some margins cropped into neatline and/or with frayed edges, some marginal tears and chips, Bible and Genealogies Good to Very Good overall (the other matter bound at front and back with paper repairs and some loss of text.) ********************************* Comports most closely with Herbert 313 (the first quarto edition of the King James Bible, 1612) with the NT title omitting "Appointed," Gen. x, 16 reading "Emorite," and Ruth iii, 15, reading "hee." However, the general title is dated 1613, while the NT title and colophon are dated 1612. This would suggest Herbert 320; however, "Appointed" is not omitted on the general title (Herbert 320 calls for both titles to omit this), and Ruth iii, 15 reads "hee" (Herbert 320 call for "she".) Quite possibly the 1612 edition (Herbert 313) with general title taken from another edit … [Click Below for Full Description]

LONGOMONTANUS, CHRISTIAN S. - [SOLVING THE QUADRATURE OF THE CIRCLE - BY THE SOLE DISCIPLE O TYCHO BRAHE]
Hafniae (i.e. Copenhagen), Henric Waldkirch, 1612. 4to. Bound in a recent half vellum with handwritten title to spine. Text browned, due to the quality of the paper. A tiny hole to the woodcut frame of the title-page and a handwritten "4" to the top of the title-page. A good copy. 83 pp. Title within an ornamental woodcut border, large woodcut initials, and woodcut illustrations in the text. With dedicatory letter to King Christian IV and a eulogy to the author by Casper Bartholin. ¶ The extremely rare first edition of one of Longomontanus' most important works, namely his first publication on the squaring of the circle, a problem that occupied him for decades, until his death in 1647.
The work sparked an international feud, as Longomontanus' claim to have solved the squaring of the circle provoked the British mathematician John Pell to such a degree that almost his entire time in the Netherlands (1643 till 1652) was occupied with refuting Longomonatunus' claim. Having continued to work on the quadrature of the circle ever since 1612, yet another work by Longomontanus on the problem was published in Amsterdam in 1644. The Longomontanus-Pell-affair occupied a great deal of mathematicians at the time and no-one succeeded in convincing Longomontanus that he had not solved the problem.

Longomontanus is one of the most famous Danish astronomers and mathematicians. He was so closely connected to Tycho Brahe that it is difficult to separate his fame from that of Brahe, which meant that whatever his mathematical skills may actually have been, everything he published was … [Click Below for Full Description]

PHILOLOGIE) THEOPHRASTE.
Lugduni, Viduam Ant. [Click Below for Full Description]
