PHILOLOGIE) THEOPHRASTE.
Lugduni, Viduam Ant. [Click Below for Full Description]

SYNESIUS of Cyrene (c.373-c.414); PETAU, Denis [Dionysius Petavius] (1583-1652).
Paris: Sebastien Cramoisy, 1612. Paris:: Sebastien Cramoisy, 1612., 1612. Folio (in 6s). [viii], 176, 175-427, [3], 66, [12] pp. Title printed in red and black, large title woodcut vignette (of the Morel family), decorative woodcut headpieces, large woodcut initial letters, text in double columns, 4 figs. on pages 369, 370 and 375, indexes, erratum; lacks rear free endpaper, lower corner of title torn away. The second numbered sequence in the pagination has the caption title: Ad Synesii orationem de regno. Original full vellum. Near fine. Rare. This is the only complete edition of Synesius's writings. The edition is bi-lingual, with facing Greek and Latin texts, translated by Petau, with extensive notes. Synesius was a Greek Bishop of Ptolemais and Neo-Platonic philosopher in the Cyrenaica. His writings are perhaps most notable for the tension they reveal between his Christian and Platonist beliefs. "Synesius pursued his higher studies at Alexandria, where he became a devoted disciple of the famous Hypatia, to whom several of his letters are addressed and for whom he entertained a life-long devotion. After serving sometime in the army he settled in his native land, "studying philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, everything; farming, hunting, having many a brush with hordes of pilfering Libyans; and every now and then upholding the cause of someone who had undeservedly fallen into difficulties". This kind of life, in every way suited to his tastes and disposition, was interrupted by a mission to Constantinople, the object of which was to present a gold crown to the new emper … [Click Below for Full Description]

MESSENIUS (Johan) ].
s.l. (Stockholm ?) 1612. in-12. 8ff. 199pp. 3ff. [Attributes: First Edition]

SNEL, Willebrord] (1580-1626)
Leiden, ex Officina Plantiniana Raphelengii, 1612. 4to (193 x 150 mm), pp 18 [2, verses from Lucretius on recto, verso blank]; with woodcut printer's device on title, a very good copy in nineteenth-century plain blue wrappers. First edition of this extremely rare work on sunspots and the telescope, written as an anonymous response to Christoph Scheiner's Tres epistolae de maculis solaribus, 1612, which had been published under the pseudonym 'Apelles'. This tract, the first to respond to Scheiner's Tres epistolae, has been variously catalogued under the names of Scheiner or Fabricius, but Snel has been conclusively demonstrated to be the author. Snel published this work the year before Galileo's own similarly argued response. Snel dedicated it to the Leiden University rector, Cornelius Vandermil.Snel begins by singing the praises of the wonderful invention of the telescope (the opening words of the text, 'Batavica dioptra', the 'Dutch telescope'), and then proceeds to analyse and refute Scheiner's 'three letters' point-by-point. He dismisses Scheiner's arguments about Venus in relation to the sunspots. Scheiner had observed the lower conjunction of Venus with the Sun and had concluded, correctly, that Venus and Mercury revolve around the Sun. He therefore took the sunspots to be miniature planets also circling the Sun. Snel notes how the spots thin at the extremities of the solar disc, sometimes join there and part at the centre, and move faster at the centre than at the extremities. He concludes, correctly, that they must be surface phenomena of the Sun. Galileo uses precis … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Early vellum, edges rubbed, minor soiling, some chipping to front cover. Rome (no publisher noted) 1612-1615. Rossetti 6069; Borroni 7995; Cicognara 3759; Olschki 17382. Rome. One of the most famous, exhaustive and influential view books of the monuments and antiquities of ancient and modern Rome, which was reprinted in various forms over the centuries; as well as later editions under the same title, Domenico de' Rossi and Pietro Santi Bartoli used 138 of Lauro's engravings from this work in their 1699 publication, Romanae Magnitudinis Monumenta. The charming and detailed engravings are accompanied by extensive etched captions, providing detailed critical material on many of the most notable sites in the city. London England: Robert Barker. See Photo,s. King James 1612 Join us in our fight to keep the destruction of bibles from happening due to greed. Warning Note: There are several sellers on eBay that tear Bibles apart to sell pages from $50.00 to $75.00 just for a page. We block these buyers from getting our Bibles. Their claim is the pages they sell are leftover from restoring the original books. The problem is they have no completed Bibles from the time periods of the pages they have for resale. Just a mass of separate pages from books they have torn apart. As a single page seller this book would bring well over $20,000.00 from one of these sellers. A loss of a great volume in time would be gone. Help us stop the destruction of Bibles for greed! The King James old and new testament is collated as complete with the exceptions noted. Now is your chance to get an original King James book from the beginnings of the first few years of the Kings print (at an affordable price !) Book is not perfect and priced low as such. Incomplete genealogy, 1613 Old Testament Title page with tear across right page bottom, 1612 New Testament Title page with tear from page bottom. Markings and page toning throughout as expected from a 400 year old book. Incomplete Psalms at rear. Rest of Bible collates complete. A great value of an original time period. London England: Robert Barker. Very Good Condition. THE HOLY BIBLE 1612 CONTAINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW. NEWLY TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL TONGUES. London: Robert Barker, 1612-13. 4to. A8, A-Zzz8, [A]-[M]8. Lacking Kkk3-4, being two leaves from the Apocrypha (Esdras); a few leaves of Psalms possibly supplied from another copy. [BOUND WITH] Genealogies by John Speed: A-D4, E2, F2, including double-page map of Canaan. Bound at front, following a defective and partial book of common prayer. [BOUND WITH] THE BOOK OF PSALMS, COLLECTED INTO ENGLISH MEETRE... London, 1614. A-G8, H7 (lacking H8.) Bound after the Bible. **** The whole bound in modern calf with spine lettered in gilt. Contents with occasional soiling, typical age-toning, some margins cropped into neat line and/or with frayed edges, some marginal tears and chips, Bible and Genealogies Good to Very Good overall (the other matter bound at front and back with paper repairs and some loss of text.) Comports most closely with Herbert 313 (the first quarto edition of the King James Bible, 1612) with the NT title omitting "Appointed," Gen. x, 16 reading "Emorite," However, the general title is dated 1613, while the NT title and colophon are dated 1612. This would suggest Herbert 320; however, "Appointed" is not omitted on the general title (Herbert 320 calls for both titles to omit this), Quite possibly the 1612 edition (Herbert 313) with general title taken from another edition. Provenance: With early ink signature of William Armstrong, Dorchester, Oxfordshire to blank page at front of Psalms, and 18th century si … [Click Below for Full Description]

Raffaello SCHIAMINOSSI (Borgo Sansepolcro, 1572 - 1622)
Acquaforte e bulino, 1612, firmata e datata in lastra in basso. Etching and engraving, 1612, signed and dated in the plate at the bottom. After Luca Cambiaso. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed to the copperplate, in excellent condition. Raffaello Schiaminossi is part of the large group of native artists of the small village of St. Seplocro. Member of the Guild of Florentine painters from 1596, he devoted himself with success incision, translating and interpreting printed design by Ventura Salimbeni, Federico Barocci, Paolo Veronese and precisely Luca Cambiaso. Its art of engraving is quite special and innovative, characterized by strong use of chiaroscuro, realized through the use of a dense series of crossed lines, alternating with areas carved gently. Odoardo FIALETTI (Bologna 1593 - 1638)
Acquaforte, 1612, firmata in lastra in basso. Rara. cfr. Frutaz XVIII, Tav. 35; Scaccia Scarafoni, p. 26, n. 16. 364 287mm [Attributes: First Edition]

Joost van den Vondel (1587-1679): Het Pascha ofte de Verlossinge Israels wt Egypten. First Edition. Schiedam 1612. 32mo [146 x 100mm]. Contemporary vellum. With engraved title. 44 unnumbered leaves. Joost van den Vondel, (1587-1679) was a renowed Dutch writer of the 17th century. He mainly wrote poetry and theater plays, whose subject often revolved around religious themes. For a vast part of his work, Vondel's main preocuppation centered around providing a religious perspective to contemporary historical events. The present play is the author's first dramatic play, and comes as proof of his interests in theological issues. It was first staged in 1610 and then published in 1612, in the present first edition. As his most important early writing, „The Passover“ is a dramatization of the story of Moses' liberation of the Jews from Egypt. This play takes the form of an allegory that compares the exodus and liberation of the Jews from Egypt with the liberation of the Dutch from Spain. Vondel makes the comparison evident in the epilogue to the play („Comparison of the Delivery of the Children of Israel With the Liberation of the United Provinces of the Netherlands“) where he compares Wilhelm of Orania to a sort of Moses, a saviour who is meant to provide freedom to his homeland and save its people from the reign of the Spanish empire – Philip II, on the other hand, is compared to the Pharaoh of Egypt. [Click Below for Full Description]

SCHINDLER (Valentin)
Hanoviae. Typis Joannis Jacobi Hennei, 1612. Large folio, 327 x 207 mms., pp. [xvi], 1992 columns, pp. [152], attractively bound in 19th full panelled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, black leather label; some slight wear to binding, but a very good to fine copy of this major work on semitic languages. Schindler (1543 - 1604), a professor of Hebrew and oriental languages was said to have worked for decades on this dictionary, which translates Hebrew and four other semitic languages into Latin. In his Christian Hebraism in the Reformation Era (1500-1660) (2012), Stephen G. Burnett takes account of the comparative similarity of Hebrew and other semitic languages, and the study of them in the early 17th century. Referring to Schindler's "massive" work as "particularly important because it was the first attempt to produce a universal Semitic reference dictionary that provided information on biblical Hebrew, Rabbinic Hebrew, targumic and Talmudic Aramaic and even Arabic." In his 2013 study of Arabic and Semitic Languages, Arabic and Islamic Studies in the Seventeenth Century, Jan Loop amusingly remarks that "In the long run, the study of oriental languages had consequences which proved fatal for the divine status of Hebrew. By referring to the cornucopia of words, letters, and nations involved in this rich language, Valentin Schindler is reported to have championed the opinion - privately, to be sure - that Arabic was older than Hebrew." CHASSENEUZ, Barthelemy de
Francofurti ad Moenum: Willierianis, 1612. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Barthelemy de Chasseneuz was a 16th-century French jurist who published a number of books on customary law which were an important influence on Napoleonic Code. In addition to this works on law, he wrote an extensive encyclopedia entitled 'Catalogus Gloriae Mundi'. This book was a survey of every known topic with which Chasseneuz was familiar. However, the main focus of the work was French heraldry and societal ranks in the 15th-century. This 1612 edition includes charming illustrations throughout including dozens of coats of arms and family crests.
