SWEERT)
Frankfurt, Germany., Ca. 1612. Frankfurt, Germany.. Ca. 1612.. Engraving with handcolor, image 13 1/2 x 8 inches. Very good condition. Conservation matted. From Emanuel Sweert's Florilegium, first issued in 1612, with five subsequent editions. "Emanuel Sweert, a Dutch florist, was at one time Praefectus of the gardens of the Emperor Rudolf II, and it was at his behest that the work was produced. Although it did not contain prices it also served as a catalogue of plants offered for sale by Sweert at the Frankfurt Fair." (de Belder catalogue). The intaglio processes of engraving and etching had only recently been applied to botanical illustration, allowing for a finer, more spontaneous line than the woodcut. Pictured are a number of varieties of the Amaryllis family. .

DAVIES, Sir John
John Jaggard, London 1612 - A MAJOR HISTORICAL WORK 4to, pp. (iv) 287 (i). lacking first blank except for signature. Roman letter, text within double-ruled border, printed side notes, errata on verso of last. Armorial woodcuts to title page, woodcut borders and ornament to next. Large historiated initial. Contemporary autograph of 'Nico. Atkinson' (not otherwise known) at head of title page. Mostly marginal age-yellowing, a good wide copy in contemp. calf, rebacked. FIRST EDITION of the major historical work of Sir John Davies (1569-1626), poet, politician and Attorney General for Ireland, who was responsible for framing the terms of the Plantation of Ulster, a model which served the British Crown as it extended its colonial reach in North America and elsewhere. A favourite of Elizabeth I, to whom he dedicated his Hymns of Astraea (1599), Davies was later part of the deputation sent to bring James VI of Scotland to London. The new James I was also an admirer of Davies' poetry, and rewarded him with a knighthood and appointments as Solicitor-General, and later Attorney-General of Ireland. Long neglected as a poet, Davies was later championed by T. S. Eliot. Davies arrived in Ireland in 1603, just six months after the submission of the rebellious Earl of Tyrone, Hugh O'Neill. He set about constructing a system whereby English control might be extended and consolidated, placing particular importance on religious reform and 'plantation' with English and Scottish settlers. It was at around this time that he wrote the present work, which bemoans Ireland's long history of ineffici … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINT-SIMON, Maximilien Henri, Marquis de.
STCN (4 copies); cf. Admirante, Bib. Militar, p. 770; Muller, Historieplaten 66. One of three simultaneous issues of the first and only edition of a luxurious and beautifully illustrated semi-mythological history of the Batavian revolt against the Roman empire in 69-70 AD. The author and publisher spared no expense to produce a lavish book, with coloured folding maps, and illustration plates copied from those engraved by Antonio Tempesta for Otto van Veen, Batavorum cum Romanis Bellum (1612). During the Dutch revolt against Spain, the Batavian revolt against Rome took on symbolic meaning and a powerful aura of patriotism. With tears along the fold of one map, but otherwise in very good condition, with a marginal water stain at the foot of the half-title. The binding is tattered. A patriotic show-piece on the Batavian revolt..

1612. Contemporary vellum, lower right corner of front and corner of back cover damaged, else a very good copy of this rare edition, with a contemporary ownership mark at the final endpaper. pag.: [6] 144, 6. With engr. titleborder with a centrepiece titlepage mounted, woodcut printer’s device on the typographic titlepage and 29, mostly double-page folded engravings. 2: PI, PI2 A-S4 a4 (a4 blank). Diego Ufano was associated with the Spanish armies in the Netherlands. His book on artillerie first appeared in 1612. The first edition of the French translation was published in Zutphen in 1621. According to Simoni this edition was based on the French edition that was published in Frankfurt in 1614, for which Theodor de Bry copied the original plates (which are subsequently copied in our edition), and printed by Paulus van Ravesteyn at Amsterdam, with the ‘nobilitas’ device of Theodore Rodenburgh he used. Apparently Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam bought the remaining copies of the Zwolle publisher and republished the book als a title-issue. He simply added a new titlepage, consisting of an engraved border with a new titlepage pasted on in the centre. In his work Ufano describes a method used for salving guns, which had to be recovered after being lost occasionally when armies crossed rivers. The illustration shows one of the earliest depictions of a diver, using a large hood made of cow’s hide. A respiration tube was connected to his helmet and was kept above by a pig’s blatter, allowing the diver to breathe when he didn’t go any deeper then a few meters.
