Köln (Coloniae), Apud Ioannem Crithium, Sub signo Galli, 1612. 12mo. (IV),650,(14 indices) p. Overlapping vellum 14 cm (Details: 5 thongs laced through the joints. Woodcut printer's mark of the Jesuit Order on the title) (Condition: Vellum age-tanned. All four ties gone. Outer edge of the first and last two leaves are slightly thumbed) (Note: The Portuguese Jesuit theologian and Biblical scholar Manuel de Sá, 1530-1596, (the latinized form is Emanuel Sa) has written three important works, which were repeatedly published in most European countries well into the seventeenth century: 'Scholia in Quatuor Evangelia', 'Notationes in totam Scripturam Sacram' and the 'Aphorismi confessariorum'. In 1557 he was appointed professor at the Roman College at Rome, where he lectured on the prophecies of Osee, one of the minor prophets, and the 'Summa' of Thomas Aquinas. Pope Pius V appointed De Sa as a member of the commission in charge of preparing an authentic edition of the Septuagint. His last work, the 'Aphorismi confessariorum', first published in Venice in 1595, is considered to be his most important work. In it the entries are arranged as in encyclopedias in alphabetical order. The word 'aphorism' on the title has little to do with the meaning that we give it today. For instance, under the heading 'Episcopus', De Sa offers 43 quotes from different authorative sources to explain the duties and power of a bishop. In 1603 the 'Aphorismi confessariorum' were censured and placed on the 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' of the Catholic Church, in English, 'List of Banned Books', a list of p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jodocus HONDIUS II (1594 -1629)
A superior rival to the pocket Ortelius atlas appeared about 1598, under the imprint of Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz. Claesz also published the Tabularum Geographicarum Contractarum, edition with texy by Petrus Bertius, in 1600. After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title-page and 220 full-page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after Mercator and Hondius, taken from Bertius, who was only responsible for revising his text again. Copperplates, in very good conditions. Amsterd … [Click Below for Full Description]

SAINT-SIMON, Maximilien Henri, Marquis de.
, . . STCN (4 copies); cf. Admirante, Bib. Militar, p. 770; Muller, Historieplaten 66. One of three simultaneous issues of the first and only edition of a luxurious and beautifully illustrated semi-mythological history of the Batavian revolt against the Roman empire in 69-70 AD. The author and publisher spared no expense to produce a lavish book, with coloured folding maps, and illustration plates copied from those engraved by Antonio Tempesta for Otto van Veen, Batavorum cum Romanis Bellum (1612). During the Dutch revolt against Spain, the Batavian revolt against Rome took on symbolic meaning and a powerful aura of patriotism. With tears along the fold of one map, but otherwise in very good condition, with a marginal water stain at the foot of the half-title. The binding is tattered. A patriotic show-piece on the Batavian revolt.
