Ad 1: A rare Cologne edition, in the original Latin, of the most important and influential early encyclopaedia or dictionary of classical history, geography and mythology, including the author's preface to the first edition of 1498. It gives concise accounts, ranging from one line to more than half a page, of people, mythological figures, regions, cities, mountains, rivers, objects, etc. from classical times, gathered mainly from classical literature and arranged in alphabetical order. The Elucidarius was one of the most popular reference works of the first half of the 16th century and certainly the most important classical dictionary of its time. Ad 2: Rare first and only edition, in the original Latin, of the only work written by Aethon Johann von Freudenberg: a pamphlet exposing the abuses perpetrated by dishonest or incompetent doctors and the dangers of the inappropriate medications or treatments they prescribe. With a donation inscription for the San Pantaleon church (in Venice) by the heirs of the Florentine painter Francesco de Rossi (1510-1563), and on the blank final page 16 lines of manuscript notes signed "Joannes Walker", perhaps the British student of that name (b. ca. 1606/07) who registered at Leiden University in 1632. SPENSER, EDM. - [FIRST COLLECTED WORKS OF THE ENGLISH LITERARY RENAISSANCE]
(London), Mathew Lownes, 1611 (1612 & 1613). Small folio. Wonderfully bound in a beautiful full calf binding, presumably from the early 18th century, with elaborately blindstamped ornamental boards, with a single gilt line-frame. Excellently rebacked, presuambly later in the 18th or early 19th century, perfectly matching the boards, with four raised bands and blindstamped ornamentations in compartments. Gilt leather-title- and tome-labels renewed later. Some overall wear, but overall very fine. The general title-page mounted and a long vertical tear thus closed. A small hole to lower part, touching the bottom of the woodcut border. Title-page somewhat soiled and with old, faint inscriptions. Last leaf also a bit soiled and with an old, faint and crossed-out inscription. Otherwise in very nice condition with only occasional and lighter brownspotting. Three book-plates to marbled front end-papers: Harold Alfred MacMichael; Doucel; Ernest E. Baker F.S.A. With the ownership-inscription of "John Easton" in various forms to verso colophon leaf of The Faerie Queen and to first leaf of A Letter of the Authors. General title-page with elaborate woodcut border, both ornamental and figurative. Separate title-page for the second part of the Faerie Queen with half-page woodcut printer's device and woodcut device to the colophon. The other separate title-pages with different woodcut printer's devices and ornamentations. Each canto of The Faerie Queen with a large woodcut ornamental and figurative border around an epitome. London: Robert Barker, 1611. Fine antiquarian condition. The Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible "The Noblest Monument of English Prose" First Edition, First Issue "Great He" London, 1611 BIBLE, IN ENGLISH, AUTHORIZED VERSION [The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New], FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF KING JAMES BIBLE; Robert Barker; London, 1611. The Shackerstone Church St. Peter Copy, originally held by the historic Shackerstone Church St. Peter in Leicestershire and one of the few copies with any evidence of original provenance. This is the first edition, first issue of the celebrated King James Bible, often termed the "Great He" Bible due to the variant reading 'he' in Ruth 3:15 (Bb2r). All other issue points present as called for. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than five years and was laboriously attended to by over fifty translators and researchers. Six separate groups were assigned a specific section of the Scriptures and each made a preliminary translation under the direction of Lancelot Andrewes, Edward Lively and John Harding. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed, reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale, Coverdale, Geneva and Bishops' Bibles, it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. Herbert 309; Pforzheimer 61; PMM 114; STC 2216. Arguably the most important book ever published in English. PROVENANCE NOTES: "This Booke belonge … [Click Below for Full Description]

DESPORTES PHILIPPE
Edition-originale.com - [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] New edition adorned with an engraved frontispiece title and drawn by Leonard Gautier. León, Martín de.
En la Emprenta de Diego Lopez Davalos, 1611. Sole colonial-era edition and one rare in commerce of Fr. Martín de León's famous work for priests ministering to Nahuatl-speaking Indians. Fray Martín is universally held to have been one of the great scholars of the language in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, admired for his fluency and ability to explain complex matters in elegant yet easy to understand expositions, as here in his confessionary, catechism, and calendar essay. Tragedy struck this copy, which lacks the title-leaf, licences, dedication, preliminaries concerning use of the word "Teotlacatl," prologue, the remarks on the Mexican language, the first nine leaves of the catechism in Nahuatl, and fols. 109 and 124-60. Surviving is most of the catechism, the section in Spanish on the syncretism of the Spanish and the Mexican religious calendars, and all but the last half page of the confessionary in Nahuatl, the missing paragraph supplied in early, neat manuscript -- the book's sad owner redeeming its losses as best he could?

Biblia Sacra
1611 Biblia Sacra Lutheran Osiander BIBLE + Mystic Commentary New Testament A highly rare example of an early 17th-century New Testament Biblia Sacra published in Frankfurt in 1611. In 1522, Andreas Osiander edited and corrected an edition of the Vulgate Bible which included important portions of Luther’s Small Catechism. This edition, published nearly a century later, features the Vulgate that Osiander, a devout Christian mystic, used in his 16th-century. This particular example is quite rare in that it was bound with multiple full-page blank sheets between each page of text. This concept was used for Bible scholars to include their own handwritten commentary. While the majority of the sheets in this example are empty, there is a number of leaves that includes notes. All printed leaves are consecutive and present. Uebersetzungen erschienene Schrift: ?De strategematibus Satanae?, Basel 1565? (ADB I, 40f.). ? Printed double-column with headlines and chapter lines, this leaf with a fine five line ornamental capital initials, text within woodcut rules, in both gothic and roman letter. Royal Folio, Single leaf. A very fine and well preserved leaf with little wear and only a mild bit of discoloration along the outside edge. MATTHEW FROM THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF KING JAMES' BIBLE, COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE 'AUTHORIZED' VERSION, A LANDMARK OF PRINTING AND THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL ENGLISH BIBLES. The King James Bible was described by W. A. Jackson as "perhaps the single most important influence upon the development of English prose style." It was royally commissioned, in the hopes of reconciling or ameliorating the conflicts between the Bishop's Bible, officially read in services, and the Geneva Bible, much more popular among the laity, but mistrusted within much of the Church hierarchy as being aggressively radical, especially in its annotations. He was an excellent teacher... His Algebra appeared in 1608 and was one of the best textbooks on the subject that had been written up to that time... Quirós, Pedro Fernández de [Queirós, Pedro Fernandes de], 1563-1615
Augspurg [i.e. Augsburg] : bey Chrysostomo Dabertzhofer, 1611. Small quarto, recent marbled papered wrappers, all edges blue, pp [2], 9, [1], title leaf with woodcut printer's device, engraved headpiece with Jesuit trigram, historiated initial; a fine copy, housed in a custom blind tooled morocco clam shell box. Rare first German edition of the Memorial octavo of the explorer Fernández de Quirós, a report relating the discovery of the southern continent or "Terra Australis Incognita". A German translation of the eighth in a series of fourteen known presentation memorials addressed by Quirós to King Philip III of Spain, in which Quirós describes his discovery of Terra Australis Incognita, the fifth part of the known world, which he had named Australia del Espiritu Santo. In actual fact, Quirós had not discovered a southern continent, but part of the New Hebrides archipelago. Quirós is thought to have penned between 50 and 70 such memorials in total, all of them petitioning for royal support to mount a new expedition to establish a Spanish colony in the lands that he, along with Mendaña and Torres, had discovered in the South Seas. These memorials were circulated exclusively among the King and his Council ministers. The majority were manuscripts, but between 1607 and 1614 Quirós published fourteen memorials at his own expense, which were presented at the Council of the Indies. In 1610, on learning that some of these memorials had been distributed beyond their intended circle, the King ordered the recall of all copies of these documents. However, copies of the eighth memori … [Click Below for Full Description]

Original Etching. 26 cm x 37 cm. Original, vintage etching by Sir Ernest George. Signed in the plate, not in pencil ! Only very faint signs of some foxing. Mounted, ready to be framed. With descriptive Letterpress by Ernest George (included is a wonderful historic explanation regarding this old location in London by Ernest George). Sir Paul Pindar (15651650) was a merchant and, from 1611 to 1620, was Ambassador of King James I of England to the Ottoman Empire. Born in Wellingborough and educated at Wellingborough School Pindar entered trade as the apprentice to an Italian merchant in London. He later became involved when he received Company Articles to the Ottoman Empire on 27 September 1611. As secretary to the English ambassador in Constantinople he arrived in December 1611, eventually becoming ambassador himself. Pindar was present when the famous gift of an organ was made to the royal household by Ambassador Lello and he went on to become a favourite of Safiye Sultan the powerful mother of Sultan Mehmet III. The frontage of Paul Pindar's house on Bishopgate is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum. As ambassador he was "renowned for his generosity in educating young men at his own 'care and cost'" He was recalled on 25 January 1618 but did not leave until May 1620. Pindar was knighted by James I in 1623.A pamphlet published in London in 1642 states that Pindar saved the life of a felon named "Running Jack" who had been sentenced to death. The prisoner "was found to have bin such a notorious Malefactor, that the Bench did condemn him to dy: but hee hath since obtai … [Click Below for Full Description]

Helt guldsnit med ciselerede ornamenter. Dobbelte kapitælbånd. Spor efter lukkesnore. Titelbladet trykt i rødt og sort indenfor en røskenramme.
