Coryate, Thomas
London: printed by W[illiam] S[tansby for the author], 1611. First edition. Engraved title by William Hole featuring portrait bust of author surrounded by emblematic figures, four additional engraved plates (2 folding) and 2 engravings in text also by Hole, full-page woodcut badge of the Prince of Wales. [196], 364, [23], 366-393, [23], 395-398, 403-655, [51] pp. Letterpress title: "Three Crude Veines are Present in This Booke...". With errata leaf and apology for errata leaf; separate title for "Posthuma fragmenta poematum georgii coryati". 4to (209 x 145 mm). The First Grand Tour, One of the Great English Literary Curiosities. In 1608 Thomas Coryate, something of an unofficial court jester in the house of Henry, Prince of Wales, undertook a journey across the continent, much of it by foot, which established precedence for the Grand Tour that would become a matter of ritual for Britians of generations to come. Coryate's idiosyncratic account of his travels remains an important work of early English literature; "intended to encourage courtiers and gallants to enrich their minds by continental travel, [it] contains illustrations, historical data, architectural descriptions, local customs, prices, exchange rates, and food and drink" (ODNB). "There probably has never been another such combination of learning and unconscious buffoonery as is here set forth. Coryate was a serious and pedantic traveller who in five months toilsome travel wandered ... over a large part (by his own reckoning 1,975 miles) of western Europe. His adventures probably appeared to his contemporaries as m … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Italian: Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino; 4 October 1542 - 17 September 1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He was canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church. Bellarmine is also widely remembered for his role in the Galileo affair. Bellarmine was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930; the following year he was declared a Doctor of the Church. His remains, in a cardinal's red robes, are displayed behind glass under a side altar in the Church of Saint Ignatius, the chapel of the Roman College, next to the body of his student, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, as he himself had wished. In the General Roman Calendar Saint Robert Bellarmine's feast day is on 17 September, the day of his death; but some continue to use pre-1969 calendars, in which for 37 years his feast day was on 13 May. The rank assigned to his feast has been "double" (1932-1959) … [Click Below for Full Description]

London:William Hall for Raphe Mab, 1611. [Colophon, 1610]. First edition. Following Guilim's death seven further editions of the work were printed, the last being in 1724. This issue, with 1611 title page is a reissue of the first edition and retains the 1610 colophon and this copy has the pagination of the final gathering in corrected state (others retain the mispaginations of the first edition).'Guillim began writing his one work, and the reason for his subsequent deserved fame, A Display of Heraldrie, at the age of forty-four in 1595. In 1611 [it] was published with a colophon dated 1610. It contained 283 folio pages and more than 500 woodcuts of shields in the text, illustrating the arms of named families and early seventeenth-century office-holders. Guillim's Display of Heraldrie, of which there were further posthumous enlarged editions, was to remain the standard textbook on English heraldry until the second half of the eighteenth century, and it is still regularly used by working heralds in the twenty-first century. The Display, which quotes earlier English and continental writers, is divided into six sections of which the first commences with the origins of heraldry, the second contains the basic divisions of the shield, the third and largest describes natural as compared to man-made charges, which are in the fourth section, the fifth has patterned coats without a predominant tincture, and the sixth deals with marshalling of arms. This copy collates complete including all title pages and text. It is rare to find this popular edition in such a state of completeness as it was well used and contrasted to the release of the first King James Bible. The entire Book of Common Prayer and Psalms as well as preliminaries are found as called for in Geneva editions as well as the complete Genealogies and 2 page map by John Speed as found in the newly released King James versions. In addition at the rear are both complete tables and the entire Metrical Psalms and Prayers.Found in rich supple leather hydes the binding is recent and tight. The spine maintains a maroon label with the words The Holy Bible emboldened in gold as well as the date 1611. Custom Box provided. The covers are nicely blindtooled in contemporary fashion. Although this edition was clearly trimmed based on the loss of some hand writing it remains with full wide margins and would appear uncut or trimmed if not for the minor loss of some inscriptions. Folio 357 x 225 Rare First Settler Provenance The most noteworthy provenance is that of the original owner William Smith and later his marriage to Elizabeth Smith as they were the first settlers to Middletown Connecticut in 1650. This coincides with the acquisition of the book by John Oakes in 1644 who later passed it on at his death to Thomas Palmer. Rarely have I seen such extensive 17th century chain of ownership. I suspect the Smith family sold this treasure either to support need of funds or most likely because it would have been illegal to transport an English Geneva Bible to the Americas. London 1611, 1613, 1617, 1634, 1640: Robert Barker, 1611. CONDITION: THERE IS A STORY BEHIND EVERY BLEMISH! Bible leaf collectors know that some leaves are hard to look at and others look as new as the day they left the printing press. The condition of a particular leaf reflects its history and is not an indication of its actual value. Perfect leaves are ones that have seen little or no use over the centuries in contrast to those that are scarred by the ravages of time. Unblemished leaves are unloved leaves because they have had little contact with sinners. Imperfect leaves tell a story. Some are torn and ripped and worn away by excessive use while others have burns or worm holes and still others are water stained by flood and sometimes even tears. Each ugly mark or stain is in fact a beautiful witness to the Word of God, which, "liveth and abideth forever." We offer Bible leaves as we acquire them letting their condition speak for themselves. All our leaves are sold as seen on eBay. Contact us for additional images or information. Choice Leaves, Finer than Gold, from the Word of God Taste and see! It's sweeter than honey!! Psalm 19 The BIBLICAL ARCHIVES Presents Six Original Same Text Leaves from the King James Bible 1 Thessalonians One DID YOU KNOW? Did you know that there are FIVE King James pulpit sized Bibles that at first glance all look the same? They were published by Robert Barker, the King's printer, to read page for page the same. This was a familiar practice of Robert's father, Christopher, who was the Royal printer in the 16th century. He often printed the same … [Click Below for Full Description]

RENAULME, P. DE.
Paris, Hadrianus Beys, 1611. 4to (120 x 176mm). pp. (6), 154, 47, (1), with 25 full page engraved plates. 18th century half vellum, marbled sides (small paper damage to back cover). First edition, together with Jacques August de Thou's five poems printed at the end. Most bibliographies do not mention the 24 leaves of the de Thou's text, it is however an integral part of the book. "Renaulme herborized in the Alps, in Switzerland, in Italy, and all around Paris. His book showed some awareness of the neccessity of plant classification, but he failed to arouse the interest of his contemporaries. Blunt speaks with understandable enthusiasm of the quality of the etchings, 'exquisitely sensitive and extremely personal in treatment. They are assuredly the work, not only of a great lover of nature, but of a great master of the etcher's craft'. H.H. Barlett also speaks with appreciation of the beauty of the illustrations, and his further remarks on Renaulme's nomenclature suggest that Renaulme was in advance of his time..." (Hunt 192).//Title with some old inkspotting, some inoffensive yellowing of the paper throughout.//Provenance: Bookplate of Ed. Bonnet, famous French botanist, and bookplate of 'The Horticultural Society of New York, Bequest of Kenneth K. Mackenzie', and another old armorial bookplate.//Hunt 192; Nissen BBI, 1621; Stafleu & Cowan 9073.
