London: 1611. This copy collates complete including all title pages and text. It is rare to find this popular edition in such a state of completeness as it was well used and contrasted to the release of the first King James Bible. The entire Book of Common Prayer and Psalms as well as preliminaries are found as called for in Geneva editions as well as the complete Genealogies and 2 page map by John Speed as found in the newly released King James versions. In addition at the rear are both complete tables and the entire Metrical Psalms and Prayers.Found in rich supple leather hydes the binding is recent and tight. The spine maintains a maroon label with the words The Holy Bible emboldened in gold as well as the date 1611. Custom Box provided. The covers are nicely blindtooled in contemporary fashion. Although this edition was clearly trimmed based on the loss of some hand writing it remains with full wide margins and would appear uncut or trimmed if not for the minor loss of some inscriptions. Folio 357 x 225 Rare First Settler Provenance The most noteworthy provenance is that of the original owner William Smith and later his marriage to Elizabeth Smith as they were the first settlers to Middletown Connecticut in 1650. This coincides with the acquisition of the book by John Oakes in 1644 who later passed it on at his death to Thomas Palmer. Rarely have I seen such extensive 17th century chain of ownership. I suspect the Smith family sold this treasure either to support need of funds or most likely because it would have been illegal to transport an English Geneva Bible to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: 1611. The ediition princeps of King James' Bible, commonly known as the "Authorized" version. This example is well documented in an at length description in Dr Donald Brake's 2010 census of all known 1611 "HE" bibles. This edition is referenced by Fry and meets all of Fry's 187 indicators verifying it is the actual try HE edition. Collates complete and museum quality. Only 38 copies exist in private hands. Imagine owning the first edition of the most popular book every printed in history!! The General Title is the amazingly detailed woodcut version dated 1613 as mentioned by Fry even though all indicators are clearly the 1611 edition. A few copies have a general title with this woodcut border with date of 1611 or 1613. This date, however has been ingeniously altered by pen into 1611 in very many copies. J. Lennox even doubts whether any copies of this title even exist with a General Title which had been originally dated 1611. The most important single work in the entire history of English literature representing the first edition of the King James Bible, the most widely read book in the history of man. Referred to as the HE bible based on a misprint in Ruth chapter 3 verse 15 indicating "he went into the citie" this extremely rare edition is the subject of many books and much controversy. This edition collates complete including map with no leaves in facsimile and is deserving of any museum. It is recognized that from 1611 to 1614 there are two distinct series of editions in various sizes, which differ throughout in many minor points of typography, and are generally … [Click Below for Full Description]

Etching, 1611 circa, signed lower left: 'Palma'. Excellent example, printed on contemporary laid paper, thin margins of 1 cm circa, in excellent condition. The plate was one of 26 etchings after Palma’s design published in 1611 by Giacomo Franco and again in 1636 by Marco Sadeler. On the basis of style and because some etchings can be related to Palma's paintings of the period, Bruce Davis claimed that Palma did not select drawings from his entire career but from those created roughly in the first decade of the seventeenth century. ( 1542 - 1621) was an Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He was canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church. Bellarmine is also widely remembered for his role in the Galileo affair. Bellarmine was canonized by Pope Pius XI, the following year he was declared a Doctor of the Church. His remains, in a cardinal's red robes, are displayed behind glass under a side altar in the Church of Saint Ignatius, the chapel of the Roman College, next to the body of his student, St. Aloysius Gonzaga, as he himself had wished. In the General Roman Calendar Saint Robert Bellarmine's feast day is on 17 September, the day of his death; but some continue to use pre-1969 calendars, in which for 37 years his feast day was on 13 May. The rank assigned to his feast has been "double" (1932-1959), "third-class feast" (1960-1968), and since the 1969 revision "memorial".

GROTO (Luigi).
Paris, Gilles Robinot, 1611. in-8. 8ff. 318ff. 2ff.

Paris, Hadrianus Beys, 1611. 4to (120 x 176mm). pp. (6), 154, 47, (1), with 25 full page engraved plates. 18th century half vellum, marbled sides (small paper damage to back cover). First edition, together with Jacques August de Thou's five poems printed at the end. Most bibliographies do not mention the 24 leaves of the de Thou's text, it is however an integral part of the book. "Renaulme herborized in the Alps, in Switzerland, in Italy, and all around Paris. His book showed some awareness of the neccessity of plant classification, but he failed to arouse the interest of his contemporaries. Blunt speaks with understandable enthusiasm of the quality of the etchings, 'exquisitely sensitive and extremely personal in treatment. They are assuredly the work, not only of a great lover of nature, but of a great master of the etcher's craft'. H.H. Barlett also speaks with appreciation of the beauty of the illustrations, and his further remarks on Renaulme's nomenclature suggest that Renaulme was in advance of his time." Vidus Vidius (10 February 1509 - 26 May 1569), born Guido Guidi, was an Italian surgeon and anatomist. His father was a physician and his mother was the daughter of the painter Domenico Ghirlandajo. After practising at Florence and Rome in Italy, he was invited by Francis I of France to come to Paris to be a personal doctor and teach at the College de France. While in Paris, Guido Guidi befriended artist Benvenuto Cellini and published a book on surgery, Chirurgia, in 1544. This book was one of the best illustrated at the time and was based on works of Hippocrates, Galen, and Oribasius. In 1557, Guidi returned to Italy to become the personal physician of Cosimo di Medici and taught at Pisa. He took holy orders and was ennobled.
