Ex. Off. Plantiniana Raphelengi, Leiden (Leyden / Lugduni Batavorum), Holland, 1611. This is the first edition of a Hebrew-Latin Bible, published between 1610 and 1613, by the Plantin House at Leiden. Text is based on Montanus' Polyglot Bible of the 1570', published by Plantin at Antwerp. Soiled. Damage to first 7 and last 4 leaves. Jpeg 8, available upon request shows a previous owner's signature: Margolis [?] [Nejstoth?] [=Neustadt?] That blank page also has a peculiar inscription in Latin which seems to say something like: Homo Consilium Deus Gubernantur ¿ Post bellum auxiliante, Post mortuum medicus, Dum aeges anima erit, ejus Spei ad Vivandum adjutare ¿ qui Saltandum It's seems to be a very somber text. The translation COULD be something like: Man plans God reigns - After war - help After death - doctor While the soul was sick, the hope to live helped - as dancing Scan 6, available upon request is of the last page and a Russian inscription whose translation is: "Approved by censor, November 15th, 1937. Bobruysk Jewish Rabbi". Curious that the Russians in 1837, three centuries after this Bible was printed, found it necessary to have it checked by a censor. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

He has written and published several astronomical works: Institutionum astronomicarum libri duo, 1616 Iudæorum annus lunae-solaris: and Turkish-Arabum annus lunaris mother. PONTANUS, Johannes Isaac.
Amsterdam, Jodocus Hondius, 1611.Folio. Contemporary overlapping vellum (new endpapers). With engraved title, 7 double-page engraved maps and plates, and 50 half-page maps and views in the text by Benjamin Wright. (6),292,(6),38,(4) pp.First edition. - One of the earliest descriptions of Amsterdam, its history and institutions. Of special importance are the accounts of Dutch explorations in the East-Indies and reports and of the attempts to find a North-East passage, including the account of the third voyage of Willem Barentsz. to Nova Zembla (1596-97) during which voyage Barendsz and his crew members were iced in and forced to winter over in Novaya Zemlya in a wooden cabin ('Het behouden Huis'). The map of the Polar regions illustrating the third voyage of Willem Barentsz. to Nova Zembla (1596-97) is also important as an Americanum in giving the results of Hudson's first two voyages (1607-1608) for the Muscovy Company of London. The appearance of the map by Hondius was doubtless the result of Hudson's employment by the Dutch East India Company in 1609. Pontanus also describes in detail the activities on the Amsterdam stock- and commodity markets, one of the earliest in the world and at that time the most important one. - (Age-browned).Tiele 876; Cat. VISSCHER, Claes Jansz
Claes Jansz Visscher, [1611-1621 or later]., Amsterdam. The Truce Map Hand-coloured engraved map, a few minor areas of loss skilfully repaired in facsimile. The signing of the Twelve Year Truce in 1609, by the Dutch Republic, the Southern Netherlands and Hapsburg Spain, proved a catalyst for another version of the Leo Belgicus. In around 1611, Claes Janszoon Visscher published his ?ÄòBestandskaart?Äô or ?ÄòTruce Map?Äô - ?Äúone of the peaks of 17th century cartography?Äù (van der Heijden) ?Äì a lion at rest in a sitting position, his right paw on the hilt of a lowered sword. The map is replete with allusions to the fruits of peace: to the right of the lion, war ?Äì personified by a knight in a full suit of armour ?Äì is shown asleep, and to the left personifications of North and South are shown seated together with ?Äòd?ÄôOude Twist?Äô (the old rancour) buried under foot. A cherub pours the sweet nectar of the ?ÄòBestant van 12 jaer?Äô (the 12 Year Truce) into the mouth of the lion; heavenly blessing (?Äòzeghen des hemels?Äô )descends upon the country. These bring with it arts and sciences (?ÄòConst en Wetenschap?Äô); safety (?ÄòVailighe Tijdt?Äô); knowledge and wealth (?ÄòKennisse en Rijkdom?Äô); prosperous towns (?Äò ?Äòt Vergrooten der Steden?Äô); the cultivation of the land (?Äò ?Äòt Vredich Lantbouwen?Äô); and trade (?ÄòCoophandel?Äô). Yet even in these peaceful times, the frontier guard (?ÄòFrontier Wacht?Äô) remains alert.Although the map celebrated the truce, it also implied ?Äì with the personification of north and south - the break-up of the XVII Provinces. La littérature de Desportes ne constitue pas moins un aspect important de la poésie de la Renaissance. Cette édition contient les amours de Diane, les amours d'Hyppolite, Cleonice, les élegies, les poésies imit … [Click Below for Full Description]
