Ovidius Naso, Publius
"Contemporary parchment binding. Title shield on spine is partly missing. 115 x 65 mm, 12º: A-X#8, 335 [1] pp.; 2A-2S#8, 286 [2] pp.; 2A-2F#8, 2P#8 (-2P1,2,3) 2Q#8, pp. 1-96 and 231-256. Three title pages with printer's mark of Plantijn. In the third part, the pages 97 to 230 are missing. ".Collected works of Publius Ovidius Naso (43 BC – 17 AC), one of the best Latin poets from the Golden Age of August. The binder has left out the quires 2G to 2O from the third part – no doubt on instructions of the owner of the book – and thus has left out all erotic poetry that Ovid wrote: 'Amores,' Ars amatoria' and ‘Remedia amoris.' This last poem has maintained its last page in this edition, because on the reverse side of this poem begins the poem ‘Medicamina faciei femineae.' However, the text of ‘Remedia amores' that has been printed, is carefully made unreadable with pen.

1611. THE HOLY BIBLE, CONTEYNING THE OLD TESTAMENT, AND THE NEW: NEWLY TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINALL TONGUES: AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED, BY HIS MAJESTIES SPECIALL COMMANDEMENT. APPOINTED TO BE READ IN CHURCHES. LONDON: ROBERT BARKER, 1611. Folio (16 1/2 x 10 1/4). First edition, second issue (Fry). An extremely fine, tall perfect copy. The Great “She” Bible, the “Authorized Version” or King James Bible, is one of the greatest monuments of English literature. This issue is known as the “She” Bible for the reading “she went into the citie” in Ruth 3:15. The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611. The greater part of the book was printed in 1611, but many copies were not released until 1613. Smith suggests [the delay resulted from] an accident in the printing-office which destroyed a large number of sheets” (Herbert). One of the masterpieces of the English language, the King James Bible is surely the greatest literary work ever created by committee. In the preface, Miles Smith, one of the dozens of translators, commented on the importance of the work: “Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light; that breaketh the shell, that we may eat the kernel; that putteth aside the curtain, that we may look into the most Holy place; that removeth the cover of the well, that we may come by the water.” “For every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser, or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe, there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. MAYERNE, Louis Turquet de.
Paris: Jean Berjon & Jean Le Bouc, 1611. Quarto (225 x 153 mm). Contemporary vellum, spine lettered in black on brown ground. With the privilege leaf at the rear. Spine ends and corners bumped, a few small spots to boards, some minor splits and chips to lower corners of contents, light dampstain to lower edge from sig. Ll3 onwards, rear endpapers toned and marked, otherwise an excellent and clean copy. Woodcut device on title page. Rare first edition of the Hugenot historian and political theorist's controversial treatise, considered "political dynamite" at the time (Deutsches Historisches Institut, p. 8). In it Turquet de Mayerne proposed an ideal form of government based on a balance between the monarchy, the Estates General, and the legislative branch. Within days of its publication it had been seized and banned, and Turquet de Mayerne was arrested and imprisoned for several months before being freed on the orders of Marie de Médicis. The privilege appended to the text was obtained from the Chancellor at the time, Brulart de Sillery. La monarchie aristodemocratique "set the essential sociopolitical agenda for the entire ancien régime" (Stone, p. 64). An influential work of political science, this work contains the first noted occurrence in any modern language of the phrase "political economy" ("œconomie politique", p. 558, as first observed by James E. King in 1948). The phrase was successively employed by Antoyne de Montchrétien in his Traicté de l'œconomie politique (1615), and became common currency in the discourse of economists and administrators who, in the 17th an … [Click Below for Full Description]

[RICKMAN, John].
Beddie 1611; Forbes 45; Kroepelien 1080; this edition not in Hill; cf. Williams, The Death of Captain Cook, pp. 17-22. First French edition in its second, corrected state, of this unofficial account of Cook's third and final voyage of discovery, with a colophon on page 508, lacking in the first state. John Rickman served as Second Lieutenant on the Discovery and published his account in 1781, which remained the only book-length report available to the public for more than a year. Despite its defects, the account is of great importance, since, as Glyn Williams has pointed out, "Rickman's Cook was a more violent Cook than the generally humane and restrained commander of the earlier Voyages." Fine untrimmed copy.

BAST, Pieter.
1611. Hollstein I, p. 168, 8; Keyes, Pieter Bast 8 and p. 19. Rare first state of a 16th-century view of Amsterdam as seen from the inlet known as the IJ made by Pieter Bast, a Dutch engraver from Antwerp best known for his city map of Amsterdam and this view. "In its amplitude and the sheer audacity of the presentation, this engraving is indisputably one of Bast's most significant creations. It is as much a portrait of the harbour of Amsterdam as of the city itself and underscores the unique importance of maritime trade as the principle source of the city's wealth and power". With its distinctive orientation he not only initiated the series of representations of Amsterdam as seen from the IJ, but also "established the standard for an entire genre of Dutch maritime painting" (Keyes). In 1611 a second state (edition) was published by Claesz Jansz. Visscher, who drastically altered the composition. In very good condition.

QUIROS, Pedro Fernandez de.
Madrid: 7 December, 1611. Folio, 303 x 203 mm., four leaves, foliated [1]-3 (six pages of printed text, the final leaf blank); woodcut initial "E" on the first leaf. Quirós' Memorial of 1611 One of the greatest voyage rarities: an original Quirós presentation memorial. As Carlos Sanz has written, "Apart from Columbus' Letter announcing his arrival in the Indies (America) [there is] no printed document that has counted for so much in the history of discovery and navigation... "The era of the great geographical discoveries, opened with Columbus' first transatlantic voyage, closed with those announced in the Quirós Memorial. Two great oceans (the Atlantic and the Pacific), an immense continent (America), the Philippine Islands and finally Australia are the achievements to be put to the account of this great maritime adventure, the greatest known to the centuries...". The Quirós Presentation Memorials represent the earliest printed record of discovery and plans for settlement of a Southern Continent, the discoveries that Quirós named "Austrialia del Espíritu Santo". He prepared a series of proposals, presenting them to King Philip III of Spain and his councils as Memorials between 1607 and 1614. Some of the memorials were only prepared in manuscript; just 14 were printed for presentation, at Quirós' own expense. These fourteen Presentation Memorials form a progression of statements describing the discoveries made by Quirós and Mendaña of a Southern Continent, and petition the King to support an expedition of further discovery and colonisation there, to settle the lands for Spai … [Click Below for Full Description]

AA.VV.
S. e, 1611. In 4, cm 22 x 32, pp. (8). Brossura muta. Raccolta di testimoniali rilasciate su richiesta dell'accusante, Giulio Cesare Mazzetti, riguardanti l'appartenenza all'eresia calvinista, dello zio, Cesare Mazzetti, dimorante a Bolsward (Bolsverdia), in Olanda. Altre dichiarazioni riguardano tal G. Ludovico Ferraris … [Click Below for Full Description]
