He published several academic works, including De emendatione temporum (1558), a reconstruction of Eusebius's Chronicon, a significant work in the area of ancient chronology, which he printed in his Thesaurus Temporum (1606). Throughout the course of his life, Scaliger had made many enemies, including the Jesuits, as a result of having refuted some of the historical documents that they had relied upon. His claim of Veronese ancestry was publically attacked by Gasper Scioppius and published Scaliger Hypobolimaeus (1601), debunking his claim to be a La Scala descendant. Biondo, [Flavio?]
c. 1610. Hardcover. Very Good. Seventeenth-century manuscipt. Contemporary vellum over boards (about 6.25x9 inches), gilt-stamped lettering in spine label; pp. 142, manuscript, in Italian. Boards and spine dust-soiled and a little scuffed; some faint stains here and there throughout text block, but in very good condition overall, perfectly legible. With the late-18th or early-19th century armorial bookplate of the Marchionis Salsae (on front paste-down), and the 19th-century armorial bookplate of John William War, Earl of Dudley, who purchased part of the Salza library after the death of Francesco Maria Berio in 1820 (the bookplate reads "Comme je fus").Seeking the truth in historiography -- the works recorded here were apparently extracted from the Historiam ab inclinatione Romanorum imperii decades of Flavio Biondo (not Giuliu, as written in the subtitle), and it 16th-century continuation, this Italian translation contains selected excerpts from the illustrious Renaissance historian's masterpiece. Biondo's work would have formed the logical starting point for any analysis of Italian history during the early seventeenth century, having stood as an authoritative text for more than a century and having been consulted by Machiavelli in his own investigation of Italy's disunity. The two-page anonymous preface in the present manuscript explains the editor's goal of seeking truth and exposing falsehood in the historical record, especially concerning the pontifical states.

Oblong 4to (9 x 7 inches). After the success of Mercator's 1606, "Atlas sive Cosmographia", he set about producing a smaller version, affordable to a far wider population. This "Atlas Minor" first appeared in 1607 and demand for it was so strong editions were soon published in French, Dutch, German, English and even Russian and Turkish. There are several maps here (each with contemporary color) that depict part, or all, of America. They commence with the double-hemisphere map "Typus Orbis Terrarum," followed by "America", "Polus Arcticus", "Hispania Nova", Virginia & Florida", "Cuba", "America Meridionalis", "Fretum Magellanicum", and finally, "Designatio Orbis Christiani." Koeman II Me 189A; Phillips 429. Old calf. Finely rebacked preserving spine (gilt tooling refreshed), red morocco label gilt; repair to corner of front board. A superb atlas, internally bright and fresh, in a handsome binding.
