RICHEOME Louis
- chez Pierre Rigaud., à Lyon 1610, in-8 (11,5x17cm), (24) 399pp. (1bc) (27) (1bc)., relié. - - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. Rare.

CLYFTON, Richard
Printed at Amsterdam By Gyles Thorp, 1610. First edition, 4to., (20), 226, (4)pp., fore edge of some leaves which had been affected by damp have been repaired by an expert paper restorer, in the original full vellum binding. An important item in a number of respects. Richard Clyfton (c. 1553-1616) was a Puritan divine, a pioneer Non-Conformism and a leading light of the Pilgrim Separatist movement. Described by Benjamin Brook in The Lives of the Puritans Vol. 2, 1813, as 'the principle scribe among the separatists', Clyfton was the parson at All Saints Church in Babsworth, Nottinghamshire, between 1586 and 1605. His voice was the most influential of the early Pilgrim Separates, attracting the likes of William Brewster, John Robinson and William Bradford- all of whom were to play prominent roles in the early history of the Pilgrim Fathers with Clyfton serving as their early spiritual leader and the fulcrum about whom they congregated. In 1605, however, King James I issued an order for ministers found preaching Puritan beliefs to be defrocked: an edict which resulted in Clyfton being declared a Non-Conformist and then expelled from the parsonage at Babsworth. Provided with refuge at the residence of William Brewster at the Manor House in Scrooby, Yorkshire, he became pastor and tutor to the 'private' and initially secret Separatist Church at the Scrooby Manor House- the place since recognised as the first 'home' of the Pilgrim Fathers. Once the authorities were served notice of these secret congregations, Clyfton was excommunicated from The Church of England and evaded persec … [Click Below for Full Description]

228pp. (i.e.221). Linschoten, Jan Huygen
Théodore Pierre, Amsterdam. Six engraved maps on eight sheets (two double-page, two folding, two on two folding sheets), fifty-eight engraved in-text illustrations. Folio. Expertly bound to style in old vellum. Five illustrations shaved into image area; occasional expert restoration. Very good. In a half black morocco and cloth folding box. Very rare first edition in French of the great classic of travel literature. "When Linschoten returned from Goa to his home in the Netherlands, he did so at a time when the people of northern Europe and particularly his countrymen were especially interested in what he had to report concerning the trading activities of the Portuguese in the East. He had lived in Goa for six years from 1583, and while he never ventured far from the Portuguese capital, he did have an 'avaricious thirst for knowledge which enabled him to get detailed information of land and sea as far afield as the Spice Islands and China'" - Penrose. But his most important and far-reaching observations concerned the gradual decline of Portuguese power in the East and her ability to protect her trade routes and monopolies. This, together with the trading possibilities he detailed, encouraged a series of Dutch, French, and English fleets to set sail for the Spice Islands and beyond to China and Japan. An important work that served not only as a valuable record, but also as a catalyst for change in the balance of power amongst European trading nations in the east. This first edition in French is translated from the Latin edition of Linschoten published in parts II-IV of De Bry … [Click Below for Full Description]

JAN BAPTIST
[Click Below for Full Description]

London: Felix Kyngston, 1610. First Collected Edition. Small quarto in eights (pages 190 x 133 mm), collates [20], 875, [1, blank]: complete. Leaf Oo4 is a cancel as usual. Leaf Eee3 is uncanceled. 11 woodcut portraits, 2 woodcut printer's devices, and numerous decorative woodcut initials. Bound in contemporary calf, with covers ruled in blind and gilt. Rear joint expertly repaired. Title page lightly browned with small chips to margins. Contemporary ink signatures of Thomas B. Hasset (author of King Crassus, at foot of page 194) and Sir Anthony Wodville (who wrote Lord Rivers, on page 402), plus two additional early ownership signatures. Bookplates of Cortland F. Bishop, John Lehmann, and Abel E. Berland on front pastedown. An excellent copy overall. An infuential sourcebook for English writers of the 17th century, A Mirour for Magistrates "is a collaborative collection of poems in which the ghosts of eminent statemen recount their downfalls in first person narratives called tragedies or complaints, as an example for magistrates and others in positions of power...many contemporary dramatists - including Shakespeare - were inspired by its procedures for drawing lessons for the present from historical figures" (British Library). Indeed, Shakespeare even used A Mirour's method for constructing his own tragic poem The Rape of Lucrece, which used the story of Tarquin's assault on an innocent woman to warn powerful men against violations of hospitality and virtue. An incredibly important work on its own and for its impact on the English canon. Grolier 179. STC 13446.

A Declaration of His Maiesties Royall Pleasure, In What Sort He Thinketh Fit to Enlarge, Or Reserve Himselfe in Matter of Bountie. London: Imprinted by Robert Barker, 1610 [i.e. 1611]. [iii], 29 [3] pp. Lacking initial leaf, which is blank except for signature-mark "A" in a mortised ornament. Quarto (8-1/2" x 6-1/2"). Stab-stitched pamphlet, untrimmed edges. Moderate soiling to exterior, some edgewear, light browning, faint dampstaining to upper and lower margins, occasional neat underlining in contemporary ink, brief early annotations to a few leaves and head of title page. $1,500. * First edition. Known as the Book of Bounty, this declaration clarified the confusing common-law precedents concerning monopolies and patents established during the Elizabethan period. It outlawed monopolies, but preserved the rights of inventors. It also restricted the King's power to grant patents. A landmark in the history of patent law, it established a precedent that inspired the 1624 Statute of Monopolies, which, as Holdsworth notes, established "the basis upon which our modern patent law still to some extent rests." The year 1610 is given according to Lady Day dating, the pre-1752 English practice in official business of beginning the year on March 25, the date of Annunciation. - Pa … [Click Below for Full Description]

Teixeira, Pedro, [Mir Khwand and Turan Shah].
Antwerp, Hieronymus Verdussen, 1610. 8vo. (8), 384, (8), 115 [but: 215], (17) pp. With a woodcut on title-page, a woodcut initial and some woodcut tailpieces. 17th century marbled calf with gilt label to richly gilt spine, red edges. First edition of a "history of the kings of Persia compiled from the Persian histories of Mir Khwand and Turan Shah" (Howgego), in the original Spanish, by the Portuguese merchant and adventurer Pedro Teixeira (1563-1645?). It is one of the earliest European sources to mention Qatar, relating to the pearl fishery in the region: "The pearl fishery at Bahren begins some years in June, but generally in July, an lasts all that month and August They generally go a fishing to Katar, a port on the coast of Arabia, 10 leagues to the southward of the Island Bahren. As soon an oyster is brought up, they open it, and take out the pearl. The pearls of this sea surpass all others in goodness and weight " (English translation). The work is divided into three parts. The first, which is the largest, deals with the kings of Persia. It is a summarized translation of the voluminous Rawzat al-Safa by the Persian historian Mir Khwand (ca. 1434-1498), and is probably the first translation of the text into an European language. The second part is a translation of the Ayyibud emir Turan Shah's (d. 1180) chronicle of the kings of Hormuz, a text which is today only extant in translations. Though Teixeira's adventures started in 1586, he reached Hormuz in 1593, where he resided for several years to study its history. Both parts contain a chronological account of the king … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saint Augustine
George Eld, London, 1610. First edition in English of Augustine's monumental work. Translated by John Healey. Folio, bound in full contemporary brown calf. Large woodcut printer's device on title (McKerrow 375). Decorative woodcut head-pieces and decorative and woodcut initials, including three twelve-line initials. In near fine condition. One of the great cornerstones in the history of Christian thought, The City of God is vital to an understanding of modern Western society and how it came into being. Begun in A.D. 413, the book's initial purpose was to refute the charge that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome (which had occurred just three years earlier). Indeed, Augustine produced a wealth of evidence to prove that paganism bore within itself the seeds of its own destruction. However, over the next thirteen years that it took to complete the work, the brilliant ecclesiastic proceeded to his larger theme: a cosmic interpretation of history in terms of the struggle between good and evil. By means of his contrast of the earthly and heavenly cities--the one pagan, self-centered, and contemptuous of God and the other devout, God-centered, and in search of grace--Augustine explored and interpreted human history in relation to eternity.
