DE LEU Thomas
1610. Engraved titles and 25 full-page plates (I: 13; II 12) by Thomas De Leu (some signed), all hand-coloured with hand-painted black border, laid down on leaves of card. 2 works in one volume. 4to (260 x 180mm). [14]ff (of 18, lacking plates 7, 10, 16, 18); [13]ff. Limp vellum binding, with gilt crest on upper and lower covers, titles inked at head of spine, remains of four leather ties (vellum stained and bumped, wear in particular along fore-edge of upper cover). An extraordinary collection of sumptuously coloured devotional engravings by the Paris-based, Flemish engraver and publisher Thomas de Leu (c. 1576-1614). The strictly contemporary colouring is of the highest quality with the use of gold and deep shades of orange, purple, green and blue, gilt and silver highlights, and a dramatic use of black in both titles; the additional black painted borders provide the perfect frames for the images. The identity of the colourist here is unknown, however in Paris, as in other parts of Europe at this time, professional colourists were frequently female and often members of print publishing families (e.g. Dutch cartographic colourists Anna Beeck and Anna Ortelius in the Netherlands; there is also evidence of professional female colourists active in Germany). Although Griffiths concedes that it was not an exclusively female preserve, he states, ?In most countries during the 17th- and 18th- centuries the top level of the colouring profession was dominated by women?? Comprising two works, the first begins with a fine architectural title-page followed by a series of large-scale sc … [Click Below for Full Description]

TOMÁS DE JÉSUS (ca. 1564-1627).
Rome: Giacomo Mascardi, 1610. 8vo (162 x 99 mm). [8], 234, [5] pp. Title woodcut of Saints Peter and Paul flanking papal arms, woodcut initials. Some minor marginal dust-soiling, final errata leaf slightly creased. Contemporary parchment over flexible pasteboards, traces of two fore-edge ties, manuscript spine title. Provenance: Rouen, Cathedral library, 18th-century printed label, Biblioth. Rothomag., on title.*** only edition of an important manifesto of missiology by a former Carmelite hermit turned proselytizer, "the most important Discalced Carmelite theologian of the seventeenth century" (Renaissance and Reformation). An overlooked European Americanum, it includes a brief reference to christopher columbus and activities of the franciscan missionaries in the americas. Inspired by the autobiography of Teresa of Ávila, Tomás de Jésus, born Diaz Sanchez D'Ávila (there are several variants of this name), in Baeza, Andalucia, joined the Discalced Carmelites in Granada after his university studies, in 1586. The first part of his career was marked by his wholehearted embrace of the contemplative philosophy of the new order, for which he founded the first Carmelite deserts (houses of religious reclusion for monks) in Spain. But, having retired to the Desert of Las Batuecas in his late 30s, intending to spend the rest of his life in solitary meditation, Tomás underwent a change of heart, and became an ardent proponent of Catholic activism. His biographical details seem tenuous, and different motivations for this radical and permanent shift in his views have been proposed by rel … [Click Below for Full Description]

Speed, John (1552-1629)
London: John Sudbury & George Humble Single sheet (15 x 20 inches, full margins showing the plate mark, two very small (1/4 inch) tears on bottom margin an inch either side of the crease line). An appealing uncolored engraved map of Cornwall, stretching the border with Devon in the east to Lands End, England's most westerly point. Engraved by Jodocus Hondius in Amsterdam in 1610, this is one of the most famous and decorative of all English county maps. Because of Cornwall's long and thin dimensions, Hondius had a great deal of sea area to use, which he filled with an inset view of Launceston, a large title cartouche with the Royal Arms, four local antiquities, eight coats of arms and several galleons and sea-monsters.The map was printed as part of Speeds revered atlas, 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine'. The map was part of the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale as part of 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain', the work for which Speed is best known. This celebrated Atlas contained the first set of county maps consistently attempting to show the boundaries of territorial divisions and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-a notable contribution to British topography. After 15 years assembling the Atlas it was published to immediate success: three new editions and issues appeared during Speed's lifetime and the work remained popular into the eighteenth century. Indeed the maps of this Atlas remain one of the most popular with map collectors around the world. John Speed was born in the Cheshire village of Farndon … [Click Below for Full Description]

His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667,was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse ProvinciÎn and contained 14 to 25 maps. Smaller atlases of 17 or 27 or 51 maps could still be purchased and by the mid-1670s an atlas of as many as 151 maps and charts could be purchased from his shop. In ca.1675 Frederik de Wit released a new nautical atlas. The charts in this atlas replaced the earlier charts from 1664 that are known today in only four bound examples and a few loose copies. Frederik de Wit new charts were sold in a chart book and as part of his atlases. GREGORY OF NAZIANZUS]. [MONTAGU, Richard]
Excudebat Joannes Norton, in Grecis, &c. Regius Typographus, Etonae, in Collegio Regali. [8], 172, [82]. Without terminal blank. Ninteenth-century blind-tooled calf. Marbled endpapers. Worn, with loss and tearing to head of spine, splitting to joints, lacking lettering-piece. Some sporadic spotting/browning to text, occasional damp-staining, tear without loss to X1, with old marginal repair. Manuscript bibliographical note signed 'Harlech, 1947' to blank fly-leaf. One of the earliest works to be printed at Eton, Richard Montagu's Greek edition of Gregory of Nazianzus' two discourses against Julian, dedicated to Archbishop Bancroft, was produced on the press of Sir Henry Saville (1549-1622), biblical translator (involved in the production of the Authorized Version) and then Provost of the College. Saville did much to improve the quality of education at Eton, including extending the library holdings and erecting new buildings, including one to house the press from which five classical and patristic works in Greek emanated between 1610 and 1617, including the monumental eight volume folio edition of John Chrysostom. This work shared the same type, based on the Estienne family type and specially commissioned in Holland, and the same printer, John Norton, then the King's Printer. After Saville's death the press was dismantled and with the type transferred to the Oxford University Press; the building which housed it was subsequently used as the headmaster's residence. Noort, Olivier van
Amsterdam: La vefue de Cornille Nicolas, 1610. [2],61,[1]pp., including twenty-five in-text engravings and two full-page maps. Folio. Antique-style calf, spine ornately gilt, leather label. Contemporary inscription on titlepage. Very minor toning and soiling. A few leaves trimmed a bit close. Very good. Second French edition, following the first French printing of 1602. Van Noort, a former innkeeper in Rotterdam sponsored by a group of Dutch merchants, accomplished the fourth circumnavigation of the globe after Magellan, Drake, and Cavendish. He was the first Dutch explorer to do so, making the trip from 1598 to 1601. The voyage was particularly arduous. Half the crew mutinied, his ships were constantly harassed, and most of those that didn't mutiny perished from disease. He returned to Holland "with only one battered ship and eight crew left (although some accounts suggest that forty-five crew survived). His voyage contributed little to the geographical knowledge of the time but had some effect in opening the way to the establishment of the Dutch in the East Indies...Van Noort's achievement, however, captured the imagination of his countrymen, and the published accounts sold well, the first appearing only eighteen days after his return. A more complete edition appeared later that year, followed by two amended editions in 1602" (Howgego). HOWGEGO N37. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 610/79. SABIN 55438. BORBA DE MORAES II:103. TIELE 806.

Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1610. Three volumes bound in one. Described in greater detail below. Folio. Contemporary vellum over boards; rebacked, preserving original spine. Bookplate on front pastedown. Light soiling and repairs to titlepages. Minor soiling else. Very good. Three highly important Dutch voyages, all in their second French editions and bound together as issued in 1610. These three voyages represent the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies, a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th century. The foundational accounts in the present volume, originally issued together by Amsterdam printer Cornille Nicolas, include: 1) [Lodewijcksz, Willem]: PREMIER LIVRE DE L'HISTOIRE DE LA NAVIGATION AUX INDES ORIENTALES, PAR LES HOLLANDOIS.... Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. 53 leaves. Titlepage with engraved map, forty-five in-text engravings (including three maps), seventeen in-text woodcut illustrations, and one plate on separate leaf following printed text. Moderate soiling on titlepage, slight edge wear to first few leaves. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1598. Lodewijcksz gives an account of the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies under Cornelis Houtman, from 1595 to 1597. The information collected by Houtman on the spice trade convinced the Dutch they could compete with Portugal's monopoly in the East Indies, and his narrative served to initiate the explosion of Dutch trading at the turn of the century.
