MENARD, Claude
Angers: Antoine Hernaut, 1610. Hardcover. Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. (14) ff including engraved title page by Thomas de Leu, 124 pp. Bound in contemporary vellum, title page in fine impression and text very crisply printed, an excellent copy. Extremely rare first and sole edition of this work of polemical antiquarianism, seeking to prove that the remains of St. James the Apostle are not buried at Santiago de Compostella, as Europe's most pious pilgrims had believed since the 9th century, but rather in the vaults of the chapel of St. Maurille, Angers (subsequently destroyed in 1791). Imagine the result if the theory turned out to be correct-or even plausible: the medieval citadel of Angers, by the 17th century a provincial backwater in the Loire, would have been elevated to the third most important pilgrimmage destination in Europe-after Jerusalem and Rome.Menard relates that at the Holy Synod held in Angers in 1583 it was decided to open a mysterious tomb beneath the Chapel of St. Maurille, a 5th century bishop of Angers. As his work goes on to prove in detail, the tomb evidently belonged to none other than St. James the Greater, among the first apostles of Christ and traditionally held to have been buried at Santiago de Compostella in Northern Spain. Verified by local ecclesiastics, the discovery elicited much joy and celebration by the in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Three parts in one vol. Small 4to, cont. calf (very neatly rebacked, sides a little rubbed). London: F. Kingston, 1610. Second edition, corrected and enlarged, of the most important and most famous English book on the art of navigation, "a book that set the seal on the supremacy of the English in the theory and practice of the art of navigation at this time. It contained a brilliant summary of all the chief contemporary practices of navigation together with a critical examination of their faults, and either the actual means for eliminating them or else sound guidance on the measures necessary to do away with them... "Wright's Certaine Errors was so packed with learning, was such an able survey of navigation practice at the close of the sixteenth century, and by its chart projection introduced such order out of the former cartographical confusion, that it and his other work merit fuller attention than can be devoted to it in a survey of this scope."-Waters, The Art of Navigation in England, pp. 219-20. The first edition, which appeared in 1599 and is a famously rare book, caused a "revolution in navigational science, which for the first time [Wright] based f … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition into English.Antonio de Solís y Ribadeneyra (1610 - April 19, 1686), Spanish dramatist and historian, was born at Alcalá de Henares (less probably, Plasencia). He studied law at Salamanca, where he produced a comedy entitled Amor y obligación, which was acted in 1627. Of his ten extant plays, two have some place in the history of the drama. El Antor al use was adapted by Scarron and again by Thomas Corneille as L'Amour de la mode, while La Gitanilla de Madrid, itself founded on the novela of Cervantes, has been utilized directly or indirectly by P A Wolff, Victor Hugo and Longfellow. The titles of the remaining seven are Triunfos de amor y fortuna, Eurídice y Orfeo, El Alcetzar del secrete, Las Amazonas, El doctor Carlino, Un bobo hace ciento, and Amparar el enemigo. MARINELLO Giovanni
In-16 p. (mm. 151x90), mz. pergam. ottocent., tit. oro su tassello al dorso, 24 cc.nn., 327 cc.num. Terza edizione. Cfr. Wellcome,I,4063. Biograf. Italiani,LXX, p. 391. [DONNE, JOHN].
London: Printed by W. Stansby for Walter Burre, 1610. First edition. 392 pages, 4to, 18th century half calf and marbled boards, black leather label, gilt rules and lettering. With the two often-missing leaves following the Table of the Chapters, containing the Advertisement to the Reader and the Errata. . John Donne's first book, a polemical treatise on the supremacy of the King, which some Donne scholars have maintained was written specifically at the behest of King James. Donne argues that those Roman Catholics who refuse to submit to the authority of the King have brought punishment on themselves and are therefore not real martyrs but "pseudo-martyrs." As Keynes notes, Pseudo-Martyr was "carelessly printed and contains a large number of misprints." The errata records a long list, at least 18 of which have been corrected in the text of this copy in a contemporary hand. Ink signature of "Sam Foley / 1689" in the upper margin of the title-page; below that is an earlier signature that has been marked through, apparently by Sam Foley, and is not decipherable by ordinary means. Minor wear to the binding including some rubbing to the joints, a few minor water-stains and occasional foxing, some line borders trimmed by the binder in the upper margin, as usual with this book, still an unusually large, fresh, and attractive copy, enclosed in a custom clamshell box.

BRAHE, TYCHO. - [THE ASTRONOMICAL LETTERS OF TYCHO BRAHE]
Francofurti apud Godefridum Tampachium, 1610. (Colophon: Uraniburgi, Ex Officina Typhographica Authoris, 1596). 4to. Bound to style in a fine later full vellum with handwritten title to spine. In all 176 leaves. (40),309,(1 - Errata Typhographica),(1 - Brahe's large woodcut device "Astronomien"). In the text 6 woodcuts (map of Hven, Uraniborg (full page) and Stjerneborg (full page)). Upper margins with faint small remains of dampstaining, mainly at end. Otherwise clean, as it is probably washed when given a new binding. A bit of fraying to upper margins of the last 10 leaves, not affecting the letters. According to Lauritz Nielsen, "some copies of this issue has an engraved portrait of Brahe pasted to verso of titlepage" - This copy without portrait. ¶ First edition, third issue. Nearly all of the book is printed on Hven on Brahe's own handpress, as only the title-sheet and title-page are changed by the Frankfurt-printer Tampach. Friends of Brahe, in particular Henrik Rantzau, urged Brahe to publish his correspondence, and the printing of this is known to have started long before 1590. However, as with all of Brahe's major works from the printing-office on Hven, it took many years before the book was finished. The contents mainly consist in the letters exchanged with Landgraf Wilh. of Hessen and his Court-astronomer, Christoffer Rothmann. Included in the book is a description written in German of the buildings and instruments found at Hven."This is the early correspondance of Brahe with the learned Landgraf William of Hesse containing detailed instructions for the construc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Linschoten, Jan Huygen
Théodore Pierre, Amsterdam, 1610. Six engraved maps on eight sheets (two double-page, two folding, two on two folding sheets), fifty-eight engraved in-text illustrations. Folio. Expertly bound to style in old vellum. Five illustrations shaved into image area; occasional expert restoration. Very good. In a half black morocco and cloth folding box. Very rare first edition in French of the great classic of travel literature. "When Linschoten returned from Goa to his home in the Netherlands, he did so at a time when the people of northern Europe and particularly his countrymen were especially interested in what he had to report concerning the trading activities of the Portuguese in the East. He had lived in Goa for six years from 1583, and while he never ventured far from the Portuguese capital, he did have an 'avaricious thirst for knowledge which enabled him to get detailed information of land and sea as far afield as the Spice Islands and China'" - Penrose. But his most important and far-reaching observations concerned the gradual decline of Portuguese power in the East and her ability to protect her trade routes and monopolies. This, together with the trading possibilities he detailed, encouraged a series of Dutch, French, and English fleets to set sail for the Spice Islands and beyond to China and Japan. An important work that served not only as a valuable record, but also as a catalyst for change in the balance of power amongst European trading nations in the east. This first edition in French is translated from the Latin edition of Linschoten published in parts II-IV of … [Click Below for Full Description]

BRANCACCIO, Lelio. The Spanish army, a model for contemporary military training
Antwerp, Joachim Trognesius, 1610. 4to. [7 + 1 blank]f + 272p + [10]f. Text in roman & italic. Engraved title with allegorical figures and emblems of warfare + 5 finely engraved folding plates showing battle formations and military encampments. Ornamental woodcut head-pieces and initials. Contemporary vellum; rebacked. First edition of this treatise on the duties of the various military ranks and on military science in general by the Neapolitan Lelio Brancaccio, Marchese de Montesilvano (c.1560-1637), who served as military administrator in the Netherlands under Ambrogio Spinola. In 14 chapters the author describes the responsibilities of each rank from the common soldier to the general; 2 chapters are devoted to the office of chief of staff, a position he held under the King of Naples; the last chapter discusses the obligations of the prince to keep his army in good order. Three of the fine folding engravings illustrate formations of battle orders, two show fortified camps allocating correct locations for every unit. The manual was much in demand judging by four Italian reprints and a Spanish translation by Scavino (Barcelona, 1639) listed by Cockle. A few neat repairs in blank margins of first 2 leaves, occasional light traces of wear, otherwise a very good, clean copy with a contemporary French manuscript ownership entry, dated 1618, on verso of front flyleaf. Brancaccio Lelio
appressio Ioachimo Trognesio, in Anversa, 1610. In-4° (263x170mm), pp. (14), 272, (20) di indice, errata e privilegio, legatura coeva p. pergamena con unghie. Tagli azzurri. [Click Below for Full Description]
