Noort, Olivier van
Amsterdam: La vefue de Cornille Nicolas, 1610. [2],61,[1]pp., including twenty-five in-text engravings and two full-page maps. Folio. Antique-style calf, spine ornately gilt, leather label. Contemporary inscription on titlepage. Very minor toning and soiling. A few leaves trimmed a bit close. Very good. Second French edition, following the first French printing of 1602. Van Noort, a former innkeeper in Rotterdam sponsored by a group of Dutch merchants, accomplished the fourth circumnavigation of the globe after Magellan, Drake, and Cavendish. He was the first Dutch explorer to do so, making the trip from 1598 to 1601. The voyage was particularly arduous. Half the crew mutinied, his ships were constantly harassed, and most of those that didn't mutiny perished from disease. He returned to Holland "with only one battered ship and eight crew left (although some accounts suggest that forty-five crew survived). His voyage contributed little to the geographical knowledge of the time but had some effect in opening the way to the establishment of the Dutch in the East Indies...Van Noort's achievement, however, captured the imagination of his countrymen, and the published accounts sold well, the first appearing only eighteen days after his return. A more complete edition appeared later that year, followed by two amended editions in 1602" (Howgego). HOWGEGO N37. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 610/79. SABIN 55438. BORBA DE MORAES II:103. TIELE 806.

DONNE, John
W. Stansby for Walter Burre, London, 1610. FIRST EDITION. 4to. pp. [xl], 392. (errata and advertisement to the reader bound after Hhh1) Roman letter, quotes and side notes in Italic. Text within double box rule. Large grotesque woodcut initials in prefaces, smaller foliated woodcut initials in text, woodcut headpieces with the arms of James I, woodcut tailpieces, early autograph of W. Wynson on title repeated on verso, a few pencil notes by Joseph Mendham at head of pastedown, and possibly his marginal pencil marks. Light age yellowing, upper outer corner of t-p and next two leaves torn with small loss of box rule, expertly restored, dust soiling in upper and lower margins of first and last few leaves, the odd thumb mark or ink spot. A good copy, crisp and clean, in contemporary limp vellum, pastedowns from an early printed St Augustine, a little soiled, outer edges of covers strengthened with vellum at an early date. First edition of Donne's first published text which attempts to persuade English Catholics they can take James I's Oath of Allegiance, still remain spiritually loyal to Rome and avoid persecution. John Donne published Pseudo-Martyr in 1610, at a moment of extreme political tension between London and Rome. Donne, raised a Catholic, argued his case by appealing to precedents from canon, civil and natural law in existence since the beginning of Christian civilization. The Pseudo-Martyr is, as such, a survey of the relations between church and state from the days of the early church to 1600. Donne draws detailed historical parallels between crises in medieval and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Meteren, Emanuel van
London [i.e., Amsterdam], 1610. [8],244,cxciv,167,[23],37,[1] leaves, including engraved titlepage and portrait of the author, plus 6pp. contemporary manuscript notes. Folio. Contemporary calf over wooden boards, tooled in blind; metal clasps, corners, and bosses. Wear to head and foot of spine, spine leather cracking. Bookplates to front pastedown. Some light scattered soiling and wear, minor worming to margin of last few leaves. About very good. A classic history of the Netherlands and the wars against the Spanish, and an important Americanum with very significant material on the discovery of the Hudson River and the English settlements in Virginia. The author, although Dutch, spent much of his career as a merchant in London, and had extensive commercial and publishing contacts on both sides of the Channel. The first part of his history was published in 1593, followed by subsequent editions, all with added material, including an account of Drake's West India voyage of 1585, the capture of Spanish shipping by the English in 1592, and the Hawkins and Drake West India raid of 1595. This Dutch chronicle has become essential for understanding the activities in London leading to British exploration and permanent settlement in the New World. Though dated 1608 on the titlepage, the colophon gives a London, 1610 imprint. Beginning with the Dutch edition of 1609, Meteren included detailed accounts of the Virginia Company and the English settlement in Virginia. According to Parker, that edition included "the first appearance in print of the first document relating to the Virgin … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Camden, Philemon Holland [translator]
London : George Bishop and John Norton , 1610 A poor copy of an extremely rare and valuable work being the first translation of William Camden's historic survey into English. Classed as 'poor' because it is lacking the decorative title page, has had 25 of 57 maps removed, lacks some final index pages, and has some poorly done paper repairs. Philemon Holland's translation was popular but not particularly accurate. The maps are engraved by Willem Kip and William Hole after John Norden and Christopher Saxton, who produced the maps for the 1607 latin edition. In buckram library binding with gilt titles and number and raised bands to spine. The binding is sound. There is a bookplate of City of Portsmouth Public Library on the front pastedown and they are presumably responsible for the binding, new endpapers and poor paper repairs (sellotape and pasted paper). The engraved title page is missing. The first page is a dedication page with historic crossed out signature to the bottom, followed by a letterpress title page dated 1610 with an ink signature of Richard Hughes 1740 on either side of the design. There are some library markings to the reverse but no other library signs in the rest of the book. Further contents: Author to Reader 4pp; ad lectorem 3pp; Britannia 1p; alphabet 1p; text p1-822 with 25 maps, 8 pages of coins and other engravings; blank; half title Scotland (with further signature of Richard Hughes); text pp 1-54; half title Ireland; text pp 57-233; Shires of England 1p; Index 37pp; names of antiquities 7pp; Table of Scotland 7pp; Table of Ireland 3pp - lacking entr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guarinoni, Hippolytus.
Ingolstadt, Andreas Angermayr, 1610. Folio (216 x 310 mm). (72), 1330, (2) pp. Title-page printed in red and black and with large woodcut illustration, portrait of the author engraved by Raphael Sadeler after H. A Kessel. Bound in elegant late 18th century quarter red morocco, flat spine, divided into panels by gilt double fillets, gilt lettering direct, blue Kattunpapier endpapers. The work sheds unparalleled light on the cultural history of its time, discussing the daily life and toil, art, physical exercise, etc. The book is interspersed with many poems, some quite robust. The aim of Guarinonius' work was to achieve a healthy lifestyle or what he called in an acrostic 'GESONDT' (i.e. Gott / Essen und trincken / Schlaffen und wachen / Oede oder Ringerung des Uberfluss / Nutzung oder Ubung des Leibs / Dauglich Lufft / Trost dess Gemüths; Grewel , p. 110). Thomas Milles
London : William Jaggard, 1610 A fair to good copy of this scarce work in contemporary binding with frontispiece, decorative title page, 8 further plates and numerous engravings. According to some recent research Thomas Milles 1550-1626 (said to be a spy for Queen Elizabeth I) was possibly the compiler of the work with text previously written by Robert Glover (1543-1588) who collected a large selection of coats of arms and changed the way that family trees were laid out. Famous for the contemporary text change at p493 said to be done to hide concerns about the Blount family tree. This copy has had the binding repaired to provide a new spine with raised bands and title label, and to repair the corners. New endpapers have been added. With frontispiece (showing Parliament - repaired); title page (some repair to gutter); epistle dedicatory 6pp (stain on first page); dedication 1p; table 1p; text pp 1-97 (lacking page 69/70) with 8 plates, some light worming to bottom margin and small hole in p61; Peroration 7pp; blank; title page - A Catalogue of the Kinges of England - text including shields pp 3-241 (p177-180 smalll sections handwritten with shield replaced on p180 - paper is merged in and looks contemporary; shields on pp 193/4 pasted in but complete, some repaired text on p195); blank; title page; text pp 290 - 480; text 485-486; text 489-584 - section cut out on p493 and hand written text inserted ''naturall children..etc; text 588 - 1130 with title pages for sections - numerous mispaginations, some corrections and notes in contemporary hand, some paper repairs - p598 blan … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Sudbury & Humble. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only.. London, Sudbury & Humble, 1610 [c.1627]. Original engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 51.2 cm wide x 38.3 cm wide. Mounted: ca 71 cm wide x 57 cm high. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only. John Speed (1552 ?- 28 July 1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is known as England's most famous Stuart period mapmaker. Speed was born at Farndon, Cheshire, and went into his father's tailoring business. While working in London, his knowledge of history led him into learned circles and he came to the attention of Sir Fulke Greville, who subsequently made him an allowance to enable him to devote his whole attention to research. As a reward for his earlier efforts, Queen Elizabeth granted Speed the use of a room in the Custom House. His atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was published in 1610/11, and contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales besides maps of Ireland [five in all] and a general map of Scotland. Most, but not all, of the county maps have town plans on them; those showing a Scale of Passes being the places he had mapped himself. In 1627, two years before his death, Speed published Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World which was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman. There is a fascinating text describing the areas shown on the back of the maps in English, although a rare edition of 1616 of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

HURET, Grégoire.
First edition of this important work on perspective and painting. "The draughtsman and engraver Grégoire Huret (1610-70) - an academician who was also close to the king - took over Bosse's lectures at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. In 1670, Huret published <i>Optique de portraiture et peinture</i> (<i>Optics of portraying and painting</i>) in which he expressed great concern about the state of the art, particularly criticising Bosse's book from 1665 [<i>On the practices of geometrical planes and perspectives</i>] and previous publications... Huret claimed that his book should be seen as a contribution to the education of the young, especially to teaching them useful rules for drawing perspective... Huret was well read and discussed books on other subjects than perspective. Naturally enough these included general works on painting, but also Desargues's and Pascal's works on projective geometry... Among the more productive passages in Huret's book one can find a presentation of the construction and use of an angle scale. He also dealt with a point most authors avoided, namely the use of scaled lengths in perspective constructions. In this connection he presented the technique for applying a reduced distance in a distance point construction - without reducing the actual distance - that 'sGravesande applied later ... Huret may have been searching for a closer link between perspective and projective geometry. It also seems he had some doubts concerning perspective that were similar to those expressed by Leonardo da Vinci" (Andersen, <i>The Geometry of an Art: the H … [Click Below for Full Description]

A justly famous pictorial record of ancient monuments in Rome, these plates give the fullest account of Roman antiquities known in the seventeenth century, with depictions of temples, amphitheatres, columns, arches, palaces, monuments, and gardens. There are triumphal processions, costumes, military formations, a map of the Roman Empire, and much more. The plates have an amateur aspect that is intriguing (imperfect perspective, simple shadowing), considering the excellent quality of the overall production. Here we have 135 plates and [6] ff. letterpress, all plates with blank versos. Prestel, Maria Katharina (geb. Höll 1747 Nürnberg ? London 1794)

A-Y8 (Y8 blank); [352] pp. Contemporary limp vellum, manuscript spine title. 18th or 19th-century printed and manuscript library bookplate, later monogram book label. 17th-century inscriptions, including ex dono inscription of George Keith, in title page. Modern bibliographical inscriptions in front free endpaper. Vellum worn and moderately soiled but sound. Early repair to front free endpapers, title leaf, and first leaf of text, with some resulting glue stains, occasional minor worming. After the first few leaves, contents clean. Overall very good. "Miracles of the Dead" is one of the four works by German lawyer Heinrich Kornmann (ca. 1580-1620) published between 1610 and 1614 on magic and marvels. “Magical bits from the Miracles of the Dead are that the owl is a fatal omen and the peacock a presage of disease, that suffumigation with the tooth of a dead man expels witchcraft and impotency, that the herb betony protects cemeteries, and that if a mother kisses her dead child, the other children will soon die too. Astrology enters… in the question why thousands of persons with different horoscopes die on the same day in the same battle, and divination in the question what dreams about the dead signifiy, the discussion of presages of death, and the prophecies of those about to die. The problem is… argued whether the witch of Endor really resuscitated Samuel. Joan of Arc's heart was unburned at the stake. Radierung, nach G.A. Sirani (1610-1670), auf Bütten. 26,7:21,7 cm. Mit minimalem Rändchen um die Umfassungslinie. Literatur: Bartsch 8; Nagler 8, mit dem Namen des G.A. Sirani. Katalog: Das verborgene Museum I.
