The Bible Geneva London Robert Barker 1610 Folio Black Letter DMH 301. 12 x 8 x 3 inches. The vast bulk of the book is fine with good margins and strong paper but I have taken care to describe any faults that there are. The extreme edges are darkened and it carries a little aroma of maybe being hear an open fire. There is an old water stain which soon fades out. The faults are mainly in the margins faults described the book only has 3 leaves of text and 4 prelims are missing. Lacks all before A2 = first leaf is Genesis 1, front side of this is rather discoloured. C3 and C4 have minor marginal patch. J8 m1, kk5, minor tear. Very early thick dark tan full calf, has lovely used patina, looking very authentic. Andrea ANDREANI (Mantova 1546 - 1623)
The triumph of the Christian hero, who fights against the deadly sins in the lower right, and is received by Christ in heaven in the upper half. Woodcut, 1610. After a subject by Battista Franco, whose monogram can be seen on lower centre. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper without watermark, with full marginal line, in excellent condition. Lettereded bottom right 'Superiorum premisum' Example without the dedication on lower part. Andrea Andreani was one of the main artists who better expressed the art of chiaroscuro, for he was also a publisher, as some Rossiglini's works show (they bear his monogram). Ex collezione Federico Augusto II di Sassonia (Lugt 971). Bartsch XII.136.14.

Raphael SADELER I (Anversa 1560 circa - Venezia 1628 circa)
"Bulino, 1610 circa, firmato in lastra in basso a destra "Raphael Sadler f. et excud". "Engraving, 1610 ca. Signed in lower corners of impression: ""Gillis Coingnet inuentor."" and ""Raphael Sadler f. et excud."". Lettered in Latin in lower part of impression, written on a stone block: ""Sine Cerere et Baccho / friget Venus."". After a lost painting by Gillis Coignet. A good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to marginal line, small foxing, otherwise very good condition. DES LAURIERS, known as Bruscambille Nicolas
Engraved title, last leaf with privilege dated 27 July 1610. 12mo (135 x 75mm). [2], 134, [1]ff. Later 17th-century black morocco, gilt fillets on covers with fleuron corners pieces, a quasi-heraldic centre-piece made up of various small tolls including two lions rampant, the whole surmounted by a crown above a suns, spine gilt, gilt turn-ins, edges gilt. [Paris: Jean Millot A very pretty copy of this uncommon little book. Jean Millot, best known as publisher of Lescarbot?s book on Canada, published a number of such little books and in 1615 was arraigned for publishing scandalous pamphlets for which he was condemned to death, but reprieved and banished from Paris for three years. Des Lauriers, known by the stage name Bruscambille, was an actor in Paris and a member of the company which performed at the Hotel de Bourgogne, and of the ?Come diens du Roi?, who used to deliver these highly entertaining prologues (of which there are 33 here printed) whilst the audience was assembling. Of this work there are two undated editions, this with the imprint of Millot and another with the imprint of Millot and Jean de Bourdeaulx (available on Gallica =BNF Re serve Y2 1321). That edition is reset and the privilege (printed on both recto and verso of the leaf as opposed to just the recto in the present copy) is followed by a leaf with the following 6 lines: [beneath a broken rule] ?Et le dit Milot a consenty et accorde pardevant les Notaires que Jean de Bourdeaulx, aussi marchand Libraire, jouyra du mesme priuilege des Prologues Facecieux? DEADLINE JUNE 30, 2019. 1st time offering. The most famous and sought-after printed map of Scotland--the 1610 John Speed Map of Scotland. One other copy hangs in the National Library of Scotland. In late 1610 Speed was commissioned to do a map of Canaan as well as create the entire Genealogies for the King James Bible. Widely regarded by historians as the most decorative map of Scotland in existence! The 1610 map itself is extraordinary--hand colored with stunning pigments which 420 years later amazingly remain quite brilliant. There are four large portraits of the Stuart royal family, King James, Queen Anne, Prince Henry (Prince of Wales) and Charles Duke of York and Albany (later King Charles I). Amazingly, the rear glass panel which originally protected the front of the map is original 400 plus year old glass! Professionally framed. The most famous and sought-after printed map of Scotland--the 1610 John Speed Map of Scotland. One other copy hangs in the National Library of Scotland. So one may ask what does this map and John Speed have to do with the Bible Collection. Well it turns out not long after the creation of this map in late 1610 Speed was commissioned to do a map of Canaan as well as create the entire Genealogies for what became the most popular selling book in the history of the world, none other than the King James Bible !!! Aquinas, Thomas
Ex Officina Guilielmi Riverii: Atrebati [Arras, France], 1610. Rare 17th century example of Thomas Aquinas' "most perfect work, the fruit of his mature years, in which the thought of his whole life is condensed." Folio, bound in full period calf with elaborate tooling to the front and rear panels, red morocc spine label lettered in gilt, raised bands to the spine, woodcut printers device to the title page, woodcut initials, title vignettes, head and tail pieces. Printed in double columns with marginal notes and double lines. Contains the three parts of the Summa theologica, followed by the Supplement as well as the indexes. In very good condition. A desirable example of this important and influential work. One of the most influential works of Western literature, the Summa of Aquinas was first published in 1485 as an instructional guide for theology students, including seminarians and the literate laity. A compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church, it presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. Aquinas conceived the Summa specifically as a work suited to beginning students: "Because a doctor of catholic truth ought not only to teach the proficient, but to him pertains also to instruct beginners. As the Apostle says in 1 Corinthians 3: 1-2, as to infants in Christ, I gave you milk to drink, not meat, our proposed intention in this work is to convey those things that pertain to the Christian religion, in a way that is fitting to the instruction of beginners." Not only has the Summa Theologiae been one of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Saint Augustine
George Eld, London, 1610. First edition in English of Augustine's monumental work. Translated by John Healey. Folio, bound in full brown calf, elaborate gilt tooling the spine, front and rear panels double-ruled in gilt. Large woodcut printer's device on title (McKerrow 375). Decorative woodcut head-pieces and decorative and woodcut initials, including three twelve-line initials. In very good condition. A nice example of this scarce and important work. One of the great cornerstones in the history of Christian thought, The City of God is vital to an understanding of modern Western society and how it came into being. Begun in A.D. 413, the book's initial purpose was to refute the charge that Christianity was to blame for the fall of Rome (which had occurred just three years earlier). Indeed, Augustine produced a wealth of evidence to prove that paganism bore within itself the seeds of its own destruction. However, over the next thirteen years that it took to complete the work, the brilliant ecclesiastic proceeded to his larger theme: a cosmic interpretation of history in terms of the struggle between good and evil. By means of his contrast of the earthly and heavenly cities--the one pagan, self-centered, and contemptuous of God and the other devout, God-centered, and in search of grace--Augustine explored and interpreted human history in relation to eternity. BRAHE, Tycho.
Frankfurt: Tampach, 1610. First edition. An extraordinary sammelband, uniting the three most important works of the great Danish astronomer, all in first edition, Frankfurt issues, in two volumes uniformly bound in contemporary vellum. "Tycho Brahe's contributions to astronomy were enormous ... He revolutionized astronomical instrumentation. He also changed observational practice profoundly. Whereas earlier astronomers had been content to observe the positions of planets and the Moon at certain important points of their orbits, Tycho and his cast of assistants observed these bodies throughout their orbits. Without these complete series of observations of unprecedented accuracy, Kepler could not have discovered that planets move in elliptical orbits ... Tycho's observations of the new star [now recognized to have been a supernova] of 1572 and comet of 1577, and his publications on these phenomena, were instrumental in establishing the fact that these bodies were above the Moon and that therefore the heavens were not immutable as Aristotle had argued and philosophers still believed ... Further, if comets were in the heavens, they moved through the heavens. Up to now it had been believed that planets were carried on material spheres that fit tightly around each other. Tycho's observations showed that this arrangement was impossible because comets moved through these spheres" (Galileo Project). "Astronomiae instauratae progymnasmata was produced in 1602 by the author's own press at Uraniborg, and only a small number were printed for dedication purposes. It contains important in … [Click Below for Full Description]
