William Camden
George Bishop & john Norton, 1610. William Camden (1551- 1623) was a prominent English antiquarian and historian. In 1577, with the encouragement of Abraham Ortelius, William Camden began his great work Britannia, a topographical and historical survey of all of Great Britain and Ireland. The first edition published in 1586, was written in Latin; very popular, it went through five further editions of 1587, 1590, 1594, 1600 and 1607, each greatly enlarged from its predecessor in both textual content and illustrations. Camden's stated intention was to "restore antiquity to Britaine, and Britain to his antiquity". Camden's Britannia remained a standard and highly regarded authority for many years after his death. Newly translated by Philemon Holland in 1610 Spine in five (5) compartments of raised bands 252 - picture of Stonehenge 768 - pictures of runes - straight out of Tolkien 770 - pictures of tombes? Pietro Giussano nobile milanese. Rome: Stamperia della Camera Apostolica, 1610. 4to, contemporary limp vellum, pp. (10), 716 (i.e. 692), (54). Woodcut coats of arms of pope Paulus V, surrounded by Saint Peter and Saint Paul, woodcut inhabited headletters. Frontispiece with a woodcut portrait of Saint Charles at the age of 47 years. Original edition of the reference text on Saint Charles Borromeo's life. Saint Carlo Borromeo (1538-1584) was a cadet son of a noble family of the Northern Italy, destined to become a prelate at the age of twelve. After being a brilliant student at the university of Pavia, he was called to Rome by his uncle, pope Pius IV, and made cardinal in his twenties. He helped in the organization of the Council of Trent and took part in it: after this experience, he was sent to Milan in order to head the diocese where disorders and immorality have been rampant for long. He imposed a series of reforms meant to revitalize spirituality and frugality, and kept himself a demeanor of abstinence and severity that on the one hand made him a thorn in the privileged people's side, on the other, gained him the admiration of the poors who wanted him to be saint soon after his death. His preferred motto was the single Latin word Humilitas (humility). Light waterstains, but a fine and unsophisticated copy, in its original vellum bindin … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gervase Markham
1610. Offered here is a true rarity. A First Edition of 'Markham's Maister-Peece'. Printed by Nicholas Okes. This is believed to be the first book published on the subject of equine veterinary science. First published in 1610, the book went into many future editions and was regarded as a standard reference on the subject for a long time. This is a restored copy, the details of which are as follows: Text; This is almost complete, signatures Ff and Gg (pages 217 to 232 ) were absent and have been replaced with facsimiles. The latter part of the index (after 'Sulphure viue'....onwards) is missing. The text finishes at page 500 (signature Ttt 3 verso, although see below). It is likely there should be a further 2 or 3 pages of index. The British Library copy is similarly imperfect, their entry reads: Title: Markhams Maister-peece, or, What doth a Horse-man lacke. Containing all possible knowledge whatsoeuer ... touching the curing of all maner of diseases or sorrances in horses, etc. Author: Gervase Markham, 1568?-1637. The printer has misprinted some page numbers; Page 392 is followed by 383 and this continues to 406 which is followed by 307, and back again to 408. However these pages are in the correct order and the catchwords do follow, it is simply the page numbers that are wrongly printed. There are a total of 65 signatures (from 'A' to 'Ttt') giving a potential page count of between 512 … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

MORTON, Thomas (1564-1659) with manuscript annotations
Londini: [Printed by Richard Field] impensis Georg. Bishop & Ioh. Norton, 1610. Contemporary calf, central lozenge to boards, rubbed and worn, loss to spine, earlier leaves have been used as a scrapbook, with remains of removed scraps to first few gatherings, damp staining throughout. Folio. Pagination pp. [10 (of 24)], 636 (of 680), [16 (of 20)], [STC, 18177]. The text has been badly damaged at the beginning of the volume. Please note: It has been used as a scrapbook in the 19th century. The pastings since removed leaving unsightly marks. * It is lacking 14 preliminary pages, as well as a further 44 pages preceding gathering I, after which it is intact until we reach the index, which is lacking 2 leaves. A defective and scruffy but interesting volume. The title page has three inscriptions: "Sarah Foxcroft / Benj. H. Mace" and "Rev. A Fetch Ex dono Amici B.H. Mace 1849". In 1807 Sarah Foxcroft (b. 1779) married Benjamin Hale Mace, a physician. Sarah was the daughter of the Reverend Samuel Foxcroft (d. 1807), and granddaughter of the Reverend Thomas Foxcroft (1697-1769), both of whom were educated at Harvard. Thomas was a minister of the First Church in Boston, Massachusetts in the 18th century. Annotations to approximately 110 pages. The notes range from one or two words amending the Latin commentary to more extensive notes on the main English text ("for that act of the pope against fredericke read rather Massonius and Petrus Justinianus lib 2"; "+ observe that the authour here taketh masse for the service and not for that which they call the sacryfisial masse"; "the author … [Click Below for Full Description]

HENRI IV.]
Paris, F. Morel and P. Mettayer, 1620, 1610. pp. 8; woodcut arms to title, headpiece and initial. 3 works in 1 vol., 8vo; a very little light foxing; very good in later stiff vellum, red edges; bookplate of Jules Couët (1860-1938), librarian and archivist of the Comédie Française.Three very scarce works on the subject of luxury clothing and accessories employing gold and silver, of significance for the insights they provide into debates around economic and moral regulation in France in the early 17th century. In his edict of 1607, Henri IV condemns such luxury clothing as 'vaine & inutile despence', expresses the wish that his subjects spend their money more sensibly for the benefit of 'leurs enfants & successeurs', and forbids the wearing and selling of such clothing, under penalty of confiscation of goods and a fine of 1500 livres (this sum to be split between the king, hospitals for the poor, and the 'dénonciateur' of the malefactor, who could expect prison if unable to pay).In his Advis sur l'usage des passements d'or et d'argent, the mercantilist economist and contrôleur général du commerce Barthélemy de Laffemas (1545-1612) argues against the king's prohibition of gold and silver ornament, both for economic and aesthetic reasons. After considering various attempts to combat luxury in ancient and medieval times, Laffemas concludes that prohibition serves 'plustost a irriter le luxe qu'a l'arester'. He emphasises the profit to be derived from the manufacture of gold and silver thread and the employment it provides, argues for the superior value and longevity of gold and … [Click Below for Full Description]
