1610. Finely engraved title, repeated on *2 (both shaved at outer margin) incorporating a world map on Mercator's projection; one folding woodcut & letterpress diagram ("the draught of the Meridians"); two engraved illus. of instruments (one full-page) in the text; & 27 woodcut illus., many of instruments, in the text (one shaved at outer margin with slight loss). 26 p.l., 472, 122 pp., 11 leaves (including Oo4 blank). Three parts in one vol. Small 4to, cont. calf (very neatly rebacked, sides a little rubbed). London: F. Kingston, 1610. Second edition, corrected and enlarged, of the most important and most famous English book on the art of navigation, "a book that set the seal on the supremacy of the English in the theory and practice of the art of navigation at this time. It contained a brilliant summary of all the chief contemporary practices of navigation together with a critical examination of their faults, and either the actual means for eliminating them or else sound guidance on the measures necessary to do away with them? "Wright's Certaine Errors was so packed with learning, was such an able survey of navigation practice at the close of the sixteenth century, and by its chart projection introduced such order out of the former cartographical confusion, that it and his other work merit fuller attention than can be devoted to it in a survey of this scope."-Waters, The Art of Navigation in England, pp. 219-20. The first edition, which appeared in 1599 and is a famously rare book, caused a "revolution in navigational science, which for the first time [Wright] based firml … [Click Below for Full Description]

Oxenstierna, Axel Graf, schwedischer Staatsmann, Kanzler Gustav Adolfs u. der Königin Christina (1583-1654).
1610. 1¾ SS. Folio. - In religiösen Fragen herrsche - "laus deo" - Ruhe. [Click Below for Full Description]

Ireland - Speed, John. (1552 - 1629).
Sudbury & Humble, London 1610 - Original engraving. London, Sudbury & Humble, 1610 [c.1627]. The engraving (the plate) itself 51.2 cm wide x 38.3 cm wide. Mounted: ca 71 cm wide x 57 cm high. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only. John Speed (1552 – 28 July 1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is known as England's most famous Stuart period mapmaker. Speed was born at Farndon, Cheshire, and went into his father's tailoring business. While working in London, his knowledge of history led him into learned circles and he came to the attention of Sir Fulke Greville, who subsequently made him an allowance to enable him to devote his whole attention to research. As a reward for his earlier efforts, Queen Elizabeth granted Speed the use of a room in the Custom House. His atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was published in 1610/11, and contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales besides maps of Ireland [five in all] and a general map of Scotland. Most, but not all, of the county maps have town plans on them; those showing a Scale of Passes being the places he had mapped himself. In 1627, two years before his death, Speed published Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World which was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman. There is a fascinating text describing the areas shown on the back of the maps in English, although a rare edition of 1616 of the British maps has a Latin text - this is believed to have been produced for the Continental marke … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Germany].
1610. ½ folio leaf (divided vertically), written on one side. Elegantly disposed manuscript list of a series of princes and places in the Holy Roman Empire, written in a fine late 16th-century italic hand, supplemented by a contemporary hand. - Curious listing of names of places and potentates in 'Germany' (actually, within the Holy Roman Empire, since the Duke of Lorraine and the Count of Savoy are included), enumerating every class by fours - e. g. four dukes, four landgraves, four cities, four vicars etc. Evidently either a jeu d'esprit or perhaps for a literary purpose, the piece is without any identification. Including the additions in another hand, there are 12 groups of four in all (a total of 48), enough for a deck of playing cards. In addition, the second hand has inserted digits from 1 to 12 randomly beside each group. Could this be the plan for a proposed pictorial set of cards? - Slightly browned and with small damages to edges.

Bound in elegant late 18th century quarter red morocco, flat spine, divided into panels by gilt double fillets, gilt lettering direct, blue Kattunpapier endpapers. Rare first edition of this early Baroque dietetics which delights in digressions covering a multitude of topics. The work sheds unparalleled light on the cultural history of its time, discussing the daily life and toil, art, physical exercise, etc. The book is interspersed with many poems, some quite robust. The aim of Guarinonius' work was to achieve a healthy lifestyle or what he called in an acrostic 'GESONDT' (i.e. Gott / Essen und trincken / Schlaffen und wachen / Oede oder Ringerung des Uberfluss / Nutzung oder Ubung des Leibs / Dauglich Lufft / Trost dess Gemüths; Grewel , p. 110). Hippolitus Guarinonius (1571-54) was Italian by birth but lived most of his life north of the Alps. His father was the personal physician to Emperors Maximillan II and Rudolph II. Hippolitus lived in Vienna and Prague and was educated by the Jesuits. After studying medicine in Padua, he settled in Hall in the Tyrol, and by 1598 was the official town physician. Knolles, Richard, 1550-1610
London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1610. Second Edition:- TITLE CONTINUATION: - "and emperours". Richard Knolles ( late 1540s - 1610 ) was born in Northamptonshire. He received both his BA and his MA from Lincoln College, Oxford in 1565 and 1570 respectively. Knolles Historie is based heavily on a range of sixteenth-century printed chronicles and reports. It is, therefore, essentially a synthesis of other works, but a carefully crafted synthesis produced in English. Nothing of this scale and detail had appeared before, in English, on the Ottomans, and it would be another fifty years before a subsequent work in English would become the authority on the subject. Despite this fact, both Samuel Jonson and Lord Byron turned to Knolles centuries later, and both alluded to the richness of his prose style. William Shakespeare, moreover, likely used Knolles work (and possibly an earlier manuscript version) as a source for his Othello (ca. 1603-1604). This is the second edition of this major work in English but is enlarged from the first edition, and some may consider the more sought after as a result. In super overall condition, now professionally preserved and bound in Black and Navy Leather & Boards, with gilt embellished spine within the 5 raised bands. Now with new endpapers and pastedowns which are sympathetic to the period of the book. Consequently is bound tightly, and with all contents clean and secure. The early pages have a little fray at edges/margins, and a degree of creasing, but not as to damage the main text { images to follow }. reliés en un volume in-8, veau fauve marbré, dos à nerfs décoré «à la grotesque», pièce de titre havane, triple filet sur les plats, roulette décorative dorée sur les coupes, dentelle intérieure, tranches dorées (reliure ancienne) ; 1- Savaron, sieur de Villars (Maistre Jean) : Traicté contre les duels.

ROSACCIO, Giuseppe.
Venice Stefano Scolari n.d. circa 1610 - Small folio (27 x 19.75 cm), edge-bound, engraved title within elaborate border, 75 engraved plans and maps (General map and plan of Zarra with manuscript in ink below image, Rovigno, plate 4, torn into image and partly laid down), a little light spotting and soiling, old vellum-backed boards. Rare series of views of the cities, ports and islands between Venice and Constantinople, as well as Cyprus and Jerusalem. It was first published in 1598. This edition was published without the text. Several of the maps and plans resemble those in G.F. Camocio's Isole famose, particularly the maps of individual Greek islands, among which are Corfu, Crete and Cyprus. They were probably engraved by Natale Bonifacio. The "book of islands," or isolario, was invented and initially developed in Italy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Like the portolano, or pilot-book, to which it was related, it had its origins in the Mediterranean, as an illustrated guide for travelers in the Aegean Archipelago and the Levant. First published in 1598. This edition, published without any text, was edited by M. Sadeler and contains three more maps than the first. Rosaccio (c. 1530-1620) was a Venetian physician and cosmographer. He was an authority on the Geography of Claudius Ptolemy, of which he published the Italian version of Ruscelli, with additions by himself in 1598-1599. He produced many small format atlases and geographical works, as well as works on astronomy and astrology. Cf. - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale. Rare. L'oeuvre sera ensuite traduite en latin en 1613.
