In 1698, the Company of Scotland attempted a project to secure a trading colony on the Isthmus of Panama. Almost every Scottish landowner who had money to spare is said to have invested in the Darien scheme. Its failure bankrupted these landowners, but not the burghs. Nevertheless, the nobles' bankruptcy, along with the threat of an English invasion, played a leading role in convincing the Scots elite to back a union with England.; - vita of the artist: Frederik de Wit (1610 ? 1698) His Atlas began to appear around 1662 and by 1671 included anywhere from 17 to 151 maps each. In the 1690s he began to use a new title page "Atlas Maior" but continued to use his old title page. His atlas of the Low Countries first published in 1667,was named Nieuw Kaertboeck van de XVII Nederlandse Provinciën and contained 14 to 25 maps. Frederik de Wit quickly expanded upon his first small folio atlas which contained mostly maps printed from plates that he had acquired, to an atlas with 27 maps engraved by or for him. By 1671 he was publishing a large folio atlas with as many as 100 maps. Smaller atlases of 17 or 27 or 51 maps could still be purchased and by the mid … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blaeu Willem Janszoon (1571 - 1638) Amsterdam
Artist: Blaeu Willem Janszoon ca ; issued in: Amsterdam; date: ca1610. - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 38 x 50; - description: Map shows the Champagne with the cities of Sedan and Doncheri; - vita of the artist: Joan Guilliemus Blaeu was the eldest son of Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638), and was probably born in Alkmaar in the province of Noord-Holland in the final years of the 16th century. He was brought up in Amsterdam, and studied law at the University of Leiden before going into partnership with his father in the 1630s. Although his father Willem had cartographic interests, having studied under the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and having manufactured globes and instruments, his primary business was as a printer. It was under the control of Joan that the Blaeu printing press achieved lasting fame by moving towards the printing of maps and expanding to become the largest printing press in Europe in the 17th century.By the 1660s the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or Atlas Maior as it had became known by this time) had expanded to between 9 and 12 volumes, depending on the language. With over 3,000 text pages and approximately 600 maps, it was the most expensive book money could buy in the later 17th century. The translation of the text from Latin into Dutch, English, German, French, and Spanish for several volumes created enormous work for those involved in typography and letterpress activities. It is estimated that over 80 men must have been employed full-time in the Blaeu printing house in Bloemgracht, not inclu … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUGUSTINE, Aurelius Saint
George Eld, London, 1610. Woodcut device on title. Contemporary calf rebacked with original backstrip laid down, both covers stamped with central gilt decoration; first two leaves repaired on edges, minor browning to fore-edges, otherwise a very nice copy with the ownership signature on title of Dan Baker dated 1822 as well as inscription that the book was "purchased from Dan Baker by J.M. Moore" dated 1824. First edition in English, translated by John Healey from the Latin version edited by Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540), the famed Spanish scholar who was encouraged by his friend Erasmus to work on Augustine's (354-430) great treatise. Vives's De causis has been compared to Bacon's Organon. Healey (d. ca. 1609) was unable to correct the printing of his translation before his death as the dedication to the Earl of Pembroke by Thomas Thorpe (printer of Shakespeare's Sonnets) implies. Thus Healey's translation remained the sole English version until Dr. Dods's translation of 1871, and is one of the most enduring examples of Elizabethan prose. De civitate Dei influenced world history from the middle ages to the end of the eighteenth century, and its power is still present, for example, in international law. It was described by Voltaire as the first contribution to a philosophy of history. The first edition (in Latin) was printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz at Subiaco in 1467. Printing & the Mind of Man, 3. [Attributes: First Edition]

FAULHABER, Johann [GALILEI, Galileo]
Frankfurt am Main, Wolffgang Richter and Anthonius Humm, 1610. 4to (193 x 148 mm), pp 38 [2, blank], with engraved title, half-page engraved arms on dedication, and three engravings, lettered A-C in the text (first two being half-page and the third full-page), and 3 folding engraved plates; some slight waterstaining to pp 19-33, small repaired tear to one plate, a very good copy in quarter tan calf and pasteboards, title in gilt on spine, red sprinkled edges. First edition, containing the first published illustrations of Galileo’s proportional compass, of this illustrated treatise on instrument making by the Ulm mathematician and military architect Johann Faulhaber (1580-1635). This device – more accurately described as ‘Galileo’s Sector’ has been called the forerunner of the pocket computer, and was so revolutionary that it ‘suddenly made it possible for nearly everyone to deal effectively with almost any [mathematical] problem arising in practical matters by following rather simple instructions’ (Drake, p 10). Galileo invented his remarkably useful instrument around 1596, calling it the geometrical and military compass. The device bears nine sets of lines or scales for calculating square and cube roots, determining interest rates, making monetary exchanges, squaring the circle, performing trigonometric calculations for surveying, and determining specific weights of metals and stones (essential for artillery). Galileo first described this instrument in 1606 in a privately printed user’s guide La Operazione del Compasso. Speed, John. (1552 - 1629).
Sudbury & Humble,, 1610. London, Sudbury & Humble, 1610 [c.1627]. Original engraving. The engraving (the plate) itself 51.2 cm wide x 38.3 cm wide. Mounted: ca 71 cm wide x 57 cm high. Excellent condition of this early, uncoloured Speed map of Ulster. Two tiny holes in outer margins only. John Speed (1552 ? 28 July 1629) was an English cartographer and historian. He is known as England's most famous Stuart period mapmaker. Speed was born at Farndon, Cheshire, and went into his father's tailoring business. While working in London, his knowledge of history led him into learned circles and he came to the attention of Sir Fulke Greville, who subsequently made him an allowance to enable him to devote his whole attention to research. As a reward for his earlier efforts, Queen Elizabeth granted Speed the use of a room in the Custom House.nnHis atlas The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was published in 1610/11, and contained the first set of individual county maps of England and Wales besides maps of Ireland [five in all] and a general map of Scotland. Most, but not all, of the county maps have town plans on them; those showing a Scale of Passes being the places he had mapped himself. In 1627, two years before his death, Speed published Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World which was the first world atlas produced by an Englishman. There is a fascinating text describing the areas shown on the back of the maps in English, although a rare edition of 1616 of the British maps has a Latin text - this is believed to have been produced for the Continental market. Parchment full contemporary. Smooth spine with respect to the red pen. A piece of parchment missing on the back (1,5x2,5cm) and the lower flat (3x1cm). Laces still present, but short. First cover page detached. From p. 222, a gallery to 1cm in height in the middle of the text, this gallery two holes become larger or smaller, then evolving to a greater extent on the index (3cm). Back linking books of the book, which takes less lacks some seams. A part of the reading of a Protestant book, Idolatry papistical (even wrote him in response to a first book Richeome, Huguenot Idolatry) Jesuit Louis Richeome shows that the Protestant heresy is not only idolatrous and iconoclastic, but also worshiping the moon and Venus, the Devil and other pagan deities, such as Saturn. Richeome was very popular in his time as a polemicist and writer, was nicknamed the French Cicero, he never ceased to defend the Jesuits against attacks from all sides, and lay siege to Henry IV and to place themselves under his protection in all his books. It is now considered one of the forerunners of devout humanism, played by François de Sales. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. LIPSIUS, Justus.
Twelve of Lipsius's most important works, mostly on the ancient Roman world (antiquities, customs, military history and technology, and philosophy), together with his famous Qui ad principatum maximè spectant (Mirror of princes) and in volume 3 his letters. Christoffel Plantin's son-in-law Jan Moretus, who took over his great Antwerp printing and publishing office, published all twelve editions before Lipsius's death. Items 3 and 7 are first editions, and nearly all these works were first published by Plantin or Moretus. They were uniformly bound in blind-tooled pigskin, probably for a Praemonstratensian monastery near Ravensburg ca. 1610. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was one of the leading classical scholars and humanists of the Low Countries in the second half of the 16th century. The first four works are nicely illustrated with engravings by Theodore Galle, Pieter van der Borcht and others.Volume 1 with a few mostly marginal wormholes through most of the volume, but more serious in the last few and especially the first few leaves, but otherwise in good condition, with an occasional minor wormhole in volume 2, and some browning and occasional minor stains in volume 3. The bindings are somewhat rubbed with wormholes in volume 1, but also still generally good, with most of the tooling clearly preserved, the binding structure sound, and only a couple worm holes in volumes 2 and 3, one clasp lacking. The spine of volume 3 was probably covered with paper, later removed but leaving traces of paste. Contents:-Saturnalium sermonum libri duo, qui de gladiatoribus.
