Richard Knolles
London - Adam Islip, 1610 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. First edition.. With largely marginal copperplate ink annotations. Richard Knolles, d. 1610, was an English historian and translator. Knolles is best known for The Generall Historie of the Turkes, first published in 1603. Compiled from a range of Byzantine and western histories, travellers' reports and letters, together with material from Leunclavius's recent Latin translation of a late fifteenth-century Ottoman chronicle, Knolles's was the first major work on the subject to appear in English, and was quickly recognized as a masterpiece of narrative synthesis -DNB. Knolles, Richard, 1550-1610
London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1610. Second Edition:- TITLE CONTINUATION: - "and emperours". Richard Knolles ( late 1540s - 1610 ) was born in Northamptonshire. He received both his BA and his MA from Lincoln College, Oxford in 1565 and 1570 respectively. Knolles’ Historie is based heavily on a range of sixteenth-century printed chronicles and reports. It is, therefore, essentially a synthesis of other works, but a carefully crafted synthesis produced in English. Nothing of this scale and detail had appeared before, in English, on the Ottomans, and it would be another fifty years before a subsequent work in English would become the authority on the subject. Despite this fact, both Samuel Jonson and Lord Byron turned to Knolles centuries later, and both alluded to the richness of his prose style. William Shakespeare, moreover, likely used Knolles’ work (and possibly an earlier manuscript version) as a source for his Othello (ca. 1603-1604). This is the second edition of this major work in English but is enlarged from the first edition, and some may consider the more sought after as a result. In super overall condition, now professionally preserved and bound in Black and Navy Leather & Boards, with gilt embellished spine within the 5 raised bands. Now with new endpapers and pastedowns which are sympathetic to the period of the book. Consequently is bound tightly, and with all contents clean and secure. The early pages have a little fray at edges/margins, and a degree of creasing, but not as to damage the main text { images to follow }. The title was originally published in 16 … [Click Below for Full Description]

LIPSIUS, Justus.
Twelve of Lipsius's most important works, mostly on the ancient Roman world (antiquities, customs, military history and technology, and philosophy), together with his famous Qui ad principatum maximè spectant (Mirror of princes) and in volume 3 his letters. Christoffel Plantin's son-in-law Jan Moretus, who took over his great Antwerp printing and publishing office, published all twelve editions before Lipsius's death. Items 3 and 7 are first editions, and nearly all these works were first published by Plantin or Moretus. They were uniformly bound in blind-tooled pigskin, probably for a Praemonstratensian monastery near Ravensburg ca. 1610. Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) was one of the leading classical scholars and humanists of the Low Countries in the second half of the 16th century. The first four works are nicely illustrated with engravings by Theodore Galle, Pieter van der Borcht and others.Volume 1 with a few mostly marginal wormholes through most of the volume, but more serious in the last few and especially the first few leaves, but otherwise in good condition, with an occasional minor wormhole in volume 2, and some browning and occasional minor stains in volume 3. The bindings are somewhat rubbed with wormholes in volume 1, but also still generally good, with most of the tooling clearly preserved, the binding structure sound, and only a couple worm holes in volumes 2 and 3, one clasp lacking. The spine of volume 3 was probably covered with paper, later removed but leaving traces of paste. Contents:-Saturnalium sermonum libri duo, qui de gladiatoribus. KIP, WILLIAM, after NORDEN, JOHN.
[George Bishop, John Norton, London]. Copper engraved map, finely hand-coloured. 15 x 11 inches. Title, upper central panel. Numbered key to hundreds, dated 1605, upper right panel. Scale of miles. Johannes Norden deliniauit above, William Kip, Sculpsit, below. Compass rose lower right, in Britannici Maris pars. [Pl no.] 11 appears lower left. Backed on to two sheets of paper. Small tear to upper left corner (Parte of Middlesex) and lower centre left (Sussex), before backing. Early fold line in centre, otherwise fine condition. The so-called 'Saxton-Kip' maps appeared in editions of Camden's Britannia from 1607 and were based on Christopher Saxton's great county atlas of 1579. This map of Kent, drawn in 1605, was based on a survey by John Norden (c.1547-1625), the surveyor and cartographer and engraved by William Kip (fl.1585-1618). The engraving is typical of the early seventeenth century with a fine compass rose in the English Channel and scroll work cartouches around the title and list of hundreds. The 1607 Britannia (which included six of Norden's county maps and thirty-four Norden and Saxton maps engraved by Kip) was the sixth and last Latin edition (first, 1586). The last to be published in Camden's lifetime, it has been described as the first true English county atlas. The plate no. 11 indicates that this map was prepared for insertion in the 1610 edition of Camden, the first in English, the plate numbers being added before 1622, although the 1610 text continued to be used unaltered until the 1637 edition, which included the same maps. This map includes some interest … [Click Below for Full Description]

IRON WORKS, Styria
[Styria; ca. 1610-20]. An important document for the early history of iron ore mining, refining, and trading in the Erzberg region of Styria, the most important ore mining area of Central Europe. These activities have continued from Roman times and were especially important in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. This illustrated manuscript is a directory of the devices of all the iron mills likely active in the Sankt Gallen area in the early 17th century. These devices comprise a maker's mark - usually a geometrically shaped symbol but sometimes in the shape of an object such as an imperial orb, a cluster of grapes, a fish, or a mineworker - placed over a large figuratively and ornamentally designed cartouche in a variety of forms containing the name of the mill, i. e. of its current owner. Among these owners there are a number of women. Each of these devices is richly colored; the coloring is fine and fresh. Thanks to the names entered in the directory, its provenance and date may be exactly determined, as almost every entry can be assigned to a known iron mill proprietor in the Sankt Gallen area. The Pantz family is represented by Abraham, Christoph and Sebastian, active on the Pölzenbach stream near Sankt Gallen and at Weissenbach on the river Enns; we know that Sebastian died in 1613. The Schweinzer family, who also owned an iron mill at Weissenbach, likewise has three entries: Adam, Blasius (his symbol a fish) and Elias, the latter two being recorded as iron mill owners in 1604 and 1617 respectively. Wolf Scheichenfelder II was active at Sankt Gallen between 1587 … [Click Below for Full Description]

John, Mauropus, Metropolitan of Euchaita (active 11th century).
In Collegio Regali, excudebat [M. Bradwood for] Ioannes Norton, in Gr[a]ecis, &c. regius typographus. One of the first two books printed at Eton, both in Greek and both printed in 1610. The Byzantine poetry here is from the pen of John, Mauropus, an 11th-century teacher, hymnographer, orator, Byzantine Greek poet, and correspondent of scholars. This, the editio princeps, was edited by and has the notes of Matthew Bust (1543 or 1544-1613), Fellow of Eton College and father of his namesake who was Master of Eton (1611-30). The prefatory matter and notes are printed in Latin in italics and the main text is in a large greek face; the actual printer's name is from STC. Searches of STC, WorldCat, and ESTC locate many copies in Britain and even Europe, but only five in U.S. libraries. Provenance: 18th-century ownership inscription at top of title-page: "Petri Bonifantii." Most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear. => An amazing early English schoolbook!

Helenopoli [Frankfurt], Pro bibliopoleo Ioan. Theobaldi Schönwetteri, excudit Joannes Bringerus, 1610. In-8, (6ff)+238pp.+(1f), (4ff.)+784pp.
