Lodewijcksz, Willem: Neck, Jacob Cornelissoon van:
Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609.. Two volumes bound in one. Described in greater detail below. Folio. Contemporary paper-covered boards, rebacked in calf, leather label. From the Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with engraved 1860 bookplate on front pastedown and blind pressure stamp on first two printed leaves of first title. Two highly important Dutch voyages, both in their second French editions and bound together as issued in 1609. These two voyages represent the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies, a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th century. The two foundation accounts in the present volume, originally issued together by the Amsterdam printer, Cornille Nicolas, include: 1) [Lodewijcksz, Willem]: PREMIER LIVRE DE L'HISTOIRE DE LA NAVIGATION AUX INDES ORIENTALES, PAR LES HOLLANDOIS.... Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. 53 leaves. Titlepage with engraved map, forty-five in-text engravings (including three maps), seventeen in-text woodcut illustrations, and one plate on separate leaf following printed text. Moderate soiling on titlepage, slight edge wear to first few leaves. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1598. Lodewijcksz gives an account of the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies under Cornelius Houtman, from 1595 to 1597. The information collected by Houtman on the spice trade convinced the Dutch they could compete with Portugal's monopoly in the East Indies, and his narrative served to initiate the explosion of Dutch trading at the tu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Linton, Anthony:
London: Felix Kyngston, 1609.. [2],44pp. Small quarto. Contemporary vellum. Vellum a bit soiled and wrinkled. Front fly leaf torn with loss of lower edge, rear fly leaf torn in lower outer corner. Titlepage torn in lower outer corner, not affecting text. Faint marginal dampstaining. Very good. In a folding half morocco and cloth box, spine gilt. The Sir Thomas Phillipps copy, with his shelf mark on the inner front cover. A rare and important early navigational work and Americanum, with a discussion of Drake, Gilbert, "Sir Thomas Candish" (i.e. Cavendish), and other navigators who came to America. Linton was chaplain to Charles, Lord Howard of Effingham, who served as High Admiral from 1585 to 1618, and he pays special attention to the travels of English explorers. Linton himself had just returned from a voyage to the north of Asia, and notes that he has added "50 or 60 degrees of good discoverie, unto the alreadie known longitude, comprehended between the Westerne coast of America...on the one side, and the Vaygatz, or Ile van Oranges, upon the North of Nova Zemla." "The great part of the book is taken up with instructions how to find the longitude of any place 'without the help of any Eclipse'" - Church. One of the earliest English books dealing with navigation in the Pacific Ocean. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 609/69. CHURCH 343. JCB II, 63. SABIN 41385. STC 15692.

MERCATOR, Michael (1565/70-1614)
[Amsterdam: Hondius, 1609-1639]. Copper-engraved map, French text on verso. Roundels at each corner with inset maps of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and Hispaniola, the remaining containing the cartouche. 16 1/4 x 22 inches. A fine example of one of the most celebrated maps of the Americas, the only printed map by Gerard Mercator's grandson Michael. Made by Gerard's grandson Michael to complete the atlas (Atlantis Pars Altera) begun by Gerard in 1584, this map is noted for its outstanding design and beauty, particularly its symmetrical configuration of circular insets and Mannerist flow of vines, flowers and leaves surrounding the circular map. Largely based on Rumold Mercator's world map of 1587, this map aptly reflects 16th-century knowledge, theories and suppositions regarding the New World. Naturally, most of this new knowledge was coastal, and configurations of any large areas were greatly hampered by the lack of a sound means of determining longitude. Nevertheless, the collective accomplishment of explorers and mapmakers represented in this map is astounding, showing in a generally correct way the vast extent of the New World. "A few of the most famous theories are still present: a large inland lake in Canada, two of the four islands of the North Pole, a bulge to the west coast of South America and the large southern continent" (Burden). The map appeared in 1595 and 1606 editions of the Atlantis Pars Altera, after which the plate was sold to Jodocus Hondius, who reissued the maps in varying editions through 1639. The present example includes French text on vers … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seconda edizione di quest'opera che apparve in originale nel 1582 riscuotendo immediato successo, soprattutto per la chiarezza nell'esposizione. PORTA, Giovanni Battista della.
A very fine copy of "the most comprehensive view of the applications of distillation of the period" (Norman). "This book is as rare as beautiful. Ferguson, speaking of the reimpression (Strassburg, 1609), says that 'the Roman edition is a much finer book.' (Duveen).

"Porta published in 1608 at Rome a work on distillation, its methods, apparatus and applications, which is of interest as giving a more comprehensive view of the application of distillation in the sixteenth century than is found in any other work of the period." (Stillman, The Story of Early Chemistry, pp. 350-51).

"The first and longest, and the most fully illustrated, of the nine books deals with different forms of stills. Porta describes various forms of distilling apparatus for various uses including the preparation of essential oils, on which Forbes says he is a very good authority having had occasion to observe the industry in Naples. Porta was the first to give yeilds from different materials. He also deals with various stills designed to produce different strengths of alcohol, all with air cooled condensers; one still is heated by the sun. In the same spirit as his Physiognomonia and Phytognomonica, in one section he compares the stills and their functions with animals. Hot things require a still with a short thick neck, just as nature has given 'angry and furious creatures' like the bear and the lion short strong necks. After this preliminary treatise on stills, the other 8 books give more specific details of the preparation of perfumes and the distillation of essentia … [Click Below for Full Description]

KHUNRATH, Heinrich
[Colophon:] Hanau, Wilhelm Antonius, 1609. Folio (300 x 190 mm), pp 60; 222, [2, colophon and blank], with engraved title, engraved portrait of the author, 10 engraved plates, 9 double-page, and two double-page tables; a fine copy, without the usual browning, title just slightly toned, unpressed in contemporary German yapped vellum with ties, titled in ink on spine, blue edges. A fine copy of the first complete edition (the work first appeared in Hamburg in 1595, with only four plates; only three copies, Darmstadt, Basle, and Wisconsin, are known). The Amphitheatrum is ‘one of the most important books in the whole literature of theosophical alchemy and the occult sciences’.(Duveen, The Library, 5th series, 1 p 56). Khunrath ‘believed himself to be an adept of various spiritual traditions of alchemy dominated by the Paracelsian belief in the divine science of medicine as a privilege of the initiated. These efforts would, he claimed, afford eternal wisdom. On 1 February 1625 Khunrath’s Amphitheatrum was condemned by the Sorbonne for its mixture of Christianity and magic’ (DSB). Jan Diricks van Campen signed Khunrath’s portrait included in the volume, and probably also engraved the title page and the rectangular double-page plates. The four circular plates, which first appeared in the 1595 edition, were engraved by Paullus vander Doort of Antwerp. That of the alchemist praying in his laboratory was drawn by Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527–1604). The striking plates, for which this work is most noted, are as follows: 1. Emblematic title, featuring twin obelisks and various alchemi … [Click Below for Full Description]

The text was washed when rebound, lightening early manuscript notes. Overall very good, despite the facsimile leaves. The rare first English edition, first printed in Dutch, Latin, and French editions in 1598, of this primary source for early Arctic exploration, a classic collection of three Dutch northern voyages during 1594-97. Veer's narrative of a shipwreck off Nova Zembla and a terrible winter in which a number of the crew froze to death and many others were eaten by polar bears is a remarkable narrative of heroism in exploration. William Barents' narrative, as hair-raising as that of Veer, records his quest for a northeast passage to Asia. Barents (ca. 1550-97), one of the greatest arctic navigators, was accompanied on the first two expeditions by Jan Huyghen van Linschoten, famous for his voyage to the East. During the first voyage of 1594, the coast of Nova Zembla was successfully explored right up to its northernmost point. The second voyage of 1595 proved a failure when pack ice blocked the passage of the ships between the Straits of Vaigatz and the mainland as late as the summer months, the result of an especially harsh arctic winter. The third voyage, of 1596-97, which takes up … [Click Below for Full Description]

CONTANT, Paul
Poitiers: Anthoine Mesnier, 1609. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 4to. [19.5 x 13 cm] (12) ff., including engraved title, 99 (1) pp. [verso blank], (2) ff., with 9 full-page plates of specimens and 1 folding, densely engraved floral plate. Bound in contemporary calf, covers slightly abraded, gilt spine in 6 compartments, with title label gilt. Unidentified private collector's stamp on front flyleaf ("Serrant"). Inconsequential even toning, otherwise fresh, genuine copy, with the plates in very good impression. Extremely rare first edition of the first museum book in French, Paul Contant's illustrated account of his collection of curiosities, one of the earliest scientific collections in Europe, and almost certainly the rarest of all museum books. Dedicated to Contant's fellow Huguenot the Duc de Sully (memorialised in museum history by the Louvre pavillion bearing his name), each copy seems to have been assembled to serve as a program for individual visitors, thus accounting for its extraordinary rarity (see below). While taking the form of an extended poem rich in florid language and classical allusions, Contant's inventory also provides precious documentary evidence for the most noteworthy items of this very early collection. Progressing systematically through each specimen, Contant regularly inserts numbers into the poem that point the reader to both an index entry and an illustration. The 43 animal specimens-ranging from a very rotund blowfish to a dog with eight legs and a one-eyed sheep-are depicted on a series of 9 plates, while flora … [Click Below for Full Description]

ARGENSOLA, Bartolomé Leonardo de.
Madrid, Alonso Martin, 1609. Small folio. Engraved allegorical title by P. Perret + [5]f + 411 (misnumbered 407) + [1 blank]p. Woodcut ornaments and decorative initials. Contemporary limp vellum; top of spine repaired; remains of ties. First edition of this classic on Spanish and Portuguese exploits in the East Indies, an important source for the conquest of the Philippines (1564-72) and the Spice Islands under Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, and the early history of trade. It also contains sections on China, Indonesia, and Ceylon, as well as many interesting early references to Japan and the Japanese, largely relating to trade and to Christian missionary work. The numerous American references include the voyage of Sir Francis Drake (pp105-108), Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s voyage of exploration to the Straits of Magellan (pp119-131), special mention of Peru, the Patagonian giants, and Columbus. Argensola (1562-1631), royal chaplain and rector of Villahermosa, was commissioned to write this highly praised work by the Council of the Indies on the occasion of the Spanish recapture of the Moluccan islands of Ternate and Tidore in 1606. It is based on primary sources consulted in the archives of the Indies and thus comprises significant historical documentation. The fine engraved title within an architectural border represents an allegory of the Spanish conquest of the Moluccas or Spice Islands: the amazon queen ‘Maluca’ wearing a feathered crown is sitting astride a crocodile, her left hand placed on her sword, her right hand upholding a floral cornucopia, gazing at a rainbow reflecti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edmund Spenser (15521599), poet and administrator in Ireland. Spenser's Shepheardes Calender was a popular work and was reprinted in 1581, 1586, 1591, and 1597, demonstrating that Spenser did make an impact as our new poet. Spenser had clearly been working hard on his poetry, even though he had published next to nothing since his initial success with The Shepheardes Calender. The Faerie Queene was a new departure in the history of English poetry, being a combination of Italian romance, classical epic, and native English styles, principally derived from Chaucer. Spenser signalled this by inventing a new stanza (which has come to be known as the Spenserian stanza), a hybrid form adopted from the Scots poetry of James I, rhyme royal, and Italian ottava rima. It contained nine lines, the first eight being pentameters and the last line an alexandrine, and employed the rhyme scheme ababbcbcc. It was accompanied by seventeen dedicatory sonnets to a variety of figures. The poem ha … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hauser, IV 2627. Bel exemplaire.

LORINI, Buonaiuto. Description of machine tools of construction & a newly invented surveying instrument
Venice, Francesco Rampazetto, 1609. 2 parts in 1 volume, folio. [12] + 299 (misnumbered 303) + [1]p. Roman & italic letter. Large woodcut vignette of a cannon on both titles; with author's engraved portrait by W[olfgang] Kilian; with over 150 woodcut illustrations, many of which are half-page or larger (15 are full-page and 5 double-page); diagrams on pp1-6; numerous woodcut initials; printer's device at end. Vellum. The first complete edition of the earliest book on fortification offering accurate measured plans and systematic instructions which could be put into practice by a military architect. Lorini (c.1540-1611) with forty years experience in Flanders and later in the Turkish wars, advocates a method of regular bastioned traces with flanks defended by forward orillons; he also describes a concise system of reducing a fortress by the use of artillery. Book I stresses that fortification is a science, and book III contains an overview of the most significant fortification methods in use to date. The most intriguing part of this work is however book V, dedicated to machine tools of construction, describing and illustrating a variety of hoists and tackle, a water-raising engine, a dredger for draining swamps, a rope-way for rapidly moving earth, a diving bell for subterraneous work, mills, folding ladders, and the construction of pontoon bridges. The sixth book on surveying, with 27 additional illustrations and including a newly invented surveying instrument, is here contained for the first time. The dedication to the first five books is to the princes of Italy, the 6th bo … [Click Below for Full Description]
