MAURICEAU, François.
First edition, the copy of Maurice Villaret, of the book which "established obstetrics as a science" (G&M). This was the outstanding textbook of the time, the first important textbook of obstetrics for nearly sixty years (since that of Jacques Guillemeau in 1609), and the first important obstetrical text to be published in five vernacular languages as well as Latin.

Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 33; Lilly, Notable Medical Books 85; Norman 1461; Garrison-Morton 6147.

"Perhaps the first obstetric text in the modern sense, Mauriceau's Maladies des femmes grosses et accouchees established obstetrics as a science and as a separate medical specialty. Through its various translations, it exercised a dominant influence on seventeenth-century obstetrical practice.
"Following the introduction, which describes anatomic landmarks, the work is divided into three sections dealing with diseases and abnormalities from conception to the end of pregnancy, normal childbirth, and the care of the mother and newborn infant, including the choice of a suitable wet nurse. Among the important new ideas presented in Mauriceau's work were the delivery of women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, treatment of the various gestational periods, and discussions of many difficult cases. He also presented an analysis of the mechanism of labor and maintained that during labor the uterus is the active agent while the fetus plays a passive role. He gave the earliest account of the prevention of congenital syphilis by antisyphilitic treatment … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jean d' INTRAS, DE BAZAS
Seconds rare editions of both novels Jean D'Intras Bazas, published respectively in 1604 and 1603 only the BN France has a copy of the first editions and second editions. Absent the French catalogs and the British Library. A vignette on the title page of the martyrdom of the unsigned loyalty Leonard Gautier depicting two lovers committed to the pillory on a burning pyre with many characters around. Bulletin du bibliophile Nodier and the chronological list of the editions of literary texts Droz only remember this year for these textes.Pleine Sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised. Upper jaw split tail and head 6cm 2cm. Caps threadbare. The two novels are romantic tragedies, both preceded by a gallant and relatively ardent epistle to Madame de Lerm, Anne Calonges. Following the first novel, there is a series of poems which the last is a fundamentally erotic poem entitled enigma. ITE was a novelist Languedoc whose ornate and lyrical style is relatively complex. His way is relatively modern and original in the early seventeenth. Its literature seems nourished by Greek-Latin and Italian novelists of the sixteenth, but with a much more tragic and dramatic accent. His works we hastily classified as minor an important turning point for the history of baroque novel in France. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Mapa.] ORTELIUS, Abraham.
Amberes, c. 1609. -1612. Medidas de la plancha: 375 x 435 mm. Escala: 1:15.000.000.
Pedro Crasbeeck, Lisboa, 1609. [10],264 leaves. Engraved plate. Woodcut initials throughout. Minor foxing and soiling, some light dampstaining to top edge. Contemporary vellum, manuscript spine title. The history of Peru by a half-Inca Prince. First edition of the "Royal Commentaries" of the great half Spanish, half Inca historian, Garcilaso de la Vega. The Inca was the foremost historian of early Peru, and his works are the basis of our knowledge of Incan history. Lodewijcksz, Willem: Neck, Jacob Cornelissoon van
Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. Two volumes bound in one. Described in greater detail below. Folio. Contemporary boards, rebacked in calf, spine gilt, leather label. Very good. From the Library of the Earls of Macclesfield, with engraved 1860 bookplate on front pastedown and blind pressure stamp on first two printed leaves of first title. Two highly important Dutch voyages, both in their second French editions and bound together as issued in 1609. These two voyages represent the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies, a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th century. The two foundation accounts in the present volume, originally issued together by Amsterdam printer Cornille Nicolas, include: 1) [Lodewijcksz, Willem]: PREMIER LIVRE DE L'HISTOIRE DE LA NAVIGATION AUX INDES ORIENTALES, PAR LES HOLLANDOIS.... Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. 53 leaves. Moderate soiling on titlepage, slight edge wear to first few leaves. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1598. Lodewijcksz gives an account of the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies under Cornelis Houtman, from 1595 to 1597. The information collected by Houtman on the spice trade convinced the Dutch they could compete with Portugal's monopoly in the East Indies, and his narrative served to initiate the explosion of Dutch trading at the turn … [Click Below for Full Description]

PINEDA, Juan de (1558-1637).
Lyon: Lugduni, apud Horatium Cardon, 1609. [Click Below for Full Description]

GHEYN, Jacob II de.
VD 17, 39:124359A (3 copies); WorldCat (6 copies, incl. 2 the same); cf. Cockle 79 (other ed.); Jähns, pp. 1005-1007 (other ed.); Lipperheide 2057-2060 (other eds.). Rare first edition published in Germany, with woodcuts instead of engravings, of a military manual known in English as The exercise of arms, it was written and illustrated by Jacques de Gheyn and quickly became a famous pictorial army manual for use of officers to teach the young recruits how to handle their weapons: the arquebus (part 1), musket (part 2) and pike (part 3). The text, here in German and French, gives a short explanation of the illustrations. It gives an excellent picture of the successful army of the Dutch Republic after its reform by Prince Maurits, who (re)introduced exercises and discipline. It also immortalizes Prince Maurits as a military thinker and commander of the most disciplined army of his age. Some faint browning throughout, slightly more visible on a few leaves, and some foxing on title-page. Binding rebacked and a few stains on the sides. Good copy.

Arias, Francisco
Bartolomeo Zannetti. Hardcover. B00LSPSB70 In Italian. 1609, 1611, 1615 Bartolomeo Zannetti, A Spese Medesimo Zannetti, di Agostino Arditi, & Gioseppe Ambrosi (Rome, Italy), three 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches tall x 2 inches thick full vellum bound volumes, monastic-lettered titles to spines, (Vol. 1) [30], 664, (Vol. 2) [20], 704, [26], (Vol. 3) [24], 569, [43] pp., complete. The original vellum bindings are characteristically worn and soiled, lacking their original leather ties, with some cracking and separation, but still quite sound. The contents have sporadic minor foxing and age toning. Overall, despite these flaws, a very good copy of this rare, 400-year-old devotional work, with a splendid shelf appearance. Note that this is a heavy and oversized set, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~AA~ Francisco Arias (1533-1605) was a Spanish Catholic author, known as a writer of ascetical treatises. This is the first edition of the Italian translation of his work, 'The Imitation of Christ,' not to be confused with the better-known Catholic devotional work by Thomas a Kempis (circa 1380-1471). Arias was born in Seville and joined the Society of Jesus at the age of twenty-six. He studied in Alcala and was later professor of scholastic theology at Cordoba, and professor of moral theology at Trigueros. He also served as rector of the colleges at Trigueros and Cadiz. Arias was commonly regarded as a saint, and was known for his gift of prayer and his spirit of penance. He was especially devoted to the care of blacks, Moors, and the inmates … [Click Below for Full Description]
