Neck, Jacob Cornelissoon van
Amsterdam: Cornille Nicolas, 1609. Two parts. 22,[8] leaves (second part with its own titlepage). Folio. Modern three-quarter morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. A few leaves with worm tracks expertly repaired. Very good. Second French edition, following the first French edition of 1601, of this important voyages narrative, describing the initial Dutch exploration and expansion to the East Indies, a significant element in a global commercial enterprise which was to develop throughout the 17th century. Van Neck, who represented the Verre Company, commanded three ships which were part of the first successful Dutch trading voyage to the region. The other two ships were commanded by Wybrand Van Warwijck and Jacob Van Heemskerk. Van Neck's vessel became separated from the other two after rounding the Cape of Good Hope, and the three did not reunite again until his arrival in Java in late December 1598. Unlike his Dutch predecessor, Cornelis Houtman, who three years earlier had seized the port of Bantam, Van Neck dealt diplomatically with the natives. "Rather than rejecting the inflated prices asked by the local ruler, he offered to pay over the odds in order to cement a lasting relationship...Van Neck's was the most profitable of the pre-VOC [Dutch East India Company] voyages. Despite the apparently high price paid for spices, he netted a profit of 300 per cent on his overall costs. In 1601, fourteen fleets comprising sixty-five ships sailed for the East Indies, but by that time competition between rival Dutch operators, as well as with the Portuguese, had inflated p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bookplates of Boies Penrose on front pastedown ("Ex Libris Boies Penrose II") and front free endpaper ("Old East India House Ex Libris Boies Penrose"). Slight age-toning throughout. The rare first English edition of this premier source for the history of Canada, published the same year as the French first edition, complete with the first contemporary and detailed map of Canada. Lescarbot was a French writer and lawyer who spent the winter of 1606-7 at Port Royal, Acadia. He gives accounts of early French voyages and discoveries in America such as those of Villegagnon to Brazil; Verrazzano, Ribaut and Laudonnière to Florida, Champlain, sieurs de Poutrincourt and de Monts, Cartier, and Roberval. Also included is much information concerning the Indian tribes, especially those of northeastern Canada, to whom the second book in this English edition is devoted. Much of the material Lescarbot collected himself, interviewing members of the early expeditions and recording his own observations and experiences. Field, in describing the first French edition, states: "His descriptions of Indian Life and peculiarities are very interesting, an account both of their fidelity, and from being among the first a … [Click Below for Full Description]

SUAREZ, Francisco
Bernardo Giunta and Giovan Battista Ciotti, Venice, 1609. Folio, pp. (88), 776. Predominantly Roman letter, little Italic. Decorated initials, title in red and black with large printer’s device showing personifications of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany surrounded by the cities of Siena, Lucca, Pisa and curiously Perugia; title slightly stained, tiny marginal wormholes in places, a few pages lightly browned or foxed, light dampstains to final gatherings. A good copy in contemporary plain vellum; skilfully repaired and rebacked, later endpapers. Rare second edition, accurately revised and expanded after the editio princeps just published in Coimbra. Francisco Suárez (1548-1617), named by contemporaries ‘Doctor Eximius’, was a pious and highly respected theologian. He entered the Society of Jesus at Salamanca, where he read philosophy and theology and was ordained priest in 1572. He taught these two subjects all over the Iberian peninsula, including the leading universities of Alcalá de Henares, Salamanca and Coimbra, as well as, for a short period, in Rome. His fame was so great that Gregory XIII attended his first lecture in Rome, while Paul V invited him to refute the errors of King James I and stay at his side in the papal court. However, Philip II, then king of Spain and Portugal, sent him to the University of Coimbra to give further prestige to that ancient and glorious institution. It is also said that, when Suárez visited the University of Barcelona, the professors went out to greet him holding the insignia of their faculties. He was among the most eminent thinkers of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONTE, Guido Ubaldo
1609. MONTE, Guido Ubaldo.Problematum Astronomicorum, Libri Septem.Venetiis: Bernarum Juntam, Jo. Baptistam Ciottum, 1609.Scarce first edition of this Renaissance collection of problems in astronomy, including a brief chapter on comets, with engraved title vignette of a celestial map and astronomical woodcut diagrams on nearly every page. In contemporary vellum.Known also as Guidobaldo, Renaissance mathematician Guido Monte was a prominent figure in the advance of the mechanical sciences. His first book, Liber mechanicorum (1577) ?"was regarded by contemporaries as the greatest work on statics since the Greeks?" (DSB) and is now considered ?"a milestone in the history of mechanics?" (René Dugas). He was among the few to ?"pursue the project of reconciling mathematical and physical reality through the recovery and study of the works of Archimedes, Hero, and Pappus?" (Jessica Wolfe). Monte was also influential in securing appointments for Galileo, first at Pisa and then Padua, and became his friend and patron for 20 years-possibly exerting the greatest single influence on Galileo?'s mechanics. Together they conducted a series of experiments on the trajectories of cannonballs, asserting that projectiles follow parabolic paths. Building on Monte, ?"Galileo was able to apply the principle of virtual displacements to both static and dynamic cases [of motion] and was able to frame useful principles of virtual work and inertia?" (DSB). Monte?'s Problematum Astronomicorum, published posthumously, treats various aspects of observational astronomy and the determination of the position … [Click Below for Full Description]

1609. Madrid. Alonso Martin. In 4to (278 x 189 mm). 1 [blank], 12 pp., 407 (with errors in pagination), 1 [blank]. Eighteenth century calf, spine with raised bands, elaborately gilt, red morocco lettering piece, lower compartment with initials J. I. L.; minor rubbing. Excellent copy, engraved title trimmed at foot causing minor loss, as almost always, fine otherwise except some foxing and spotting.- First edition. The Council of the Indies commissioned Argensola to write a history of the Spanish explorations, and discoveries in Asia, as well as the wars and armed conflicts engaged with the Dutch, English (here incorporates an early account of Sir Francis Drake, amongst the earliest Spanish sources on the pirate), and natives. "An account of the voyage of Sir Francis Drake is included… This book is an essential work for the history of Spanish and Portuguese exploration in the East Indies" (Hill). Argensola dealt mostly with the Philippines and the Moluccas (Spice Islands, Indonesia), however his aim for a comprehensive work made him deal also with China, Java, Sumatra, Celebes and Ceylon. "In his digressions on people and places, Argensola adds significantly to the stockpile of information on Asia, especially on the Moluccas, Java, Sumatra, and Ceylon. His book also ties together neatly the affairs of Europe with struggles in the overseas areas, for he sees the spice trade in its world wide ramifications and makes his reader acutely aware of its immediate and potential interest for Japan and China." MONTAIGNE, Michel de
Leyden" [but Geneva]: by Jean Doreau,, 1609. Edition nouvelle, prise sur l'exemplaire trouve apres le deces de l'Autheur. Reveu & augmenté d'un tiers outre les precedentes impressions. Octavo (171 × 104 mm), pp. [8], 1031, [1] bl., [64], index bound at end; collates: a4 A?-3S8 3T4 a?-d8 (d8 blank). Contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, ties missing. Publisher's woodcut device to title (with the Latin motto "Ferro acuitur ferrum" ["Iron sharpens iron"]). Contemporary ownership inscription on title, binding used but sound, scattered minor worming (affecting a few words but generally unobtrusive). Rare early edition of one of the cornerstones of Western thought, first published in 1580; Copac locates only 2 copies (Oxford, Cambridge), and another 10 are added by OCLC. It is a reprint of the earlier 1602 Leyden edition, but with the useful addition of an index. However, Sayce and Maskell have established that "Leyden" is a false imprint and that the edition was actually printed at Geneva. "Montaigne devised the essay form in which to express his personal convictions and private meditations, a form in which he can hardly be said to have been anticipated. The most elaborate essay, the Apologie de Raimond Sebonde [pp. 379-546 in the present edition], is second to no other modern writing in attacking fanaticism and pleading for tolerance. He finds a place in the present canon, however, chiefly for his consummate representation of the enlightened scepticism of the sixteenth century, to which Bacon, Descartes, and Newton were to provide the answers in the next" (Printing and the … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DUVERGIER DE HAURANNE, Jean, abbé de Saint-Cyran (1581-1643)]
"Paris: chez Toussainct Du Bray, 1609. 12mo (161 x 99 mm). [1], 56 (recte 65) ff. Woodcut title vignette (harvesting scene with lion at top), woodcut headpiece and initial. Publisher's binding? of 18th-century French olive morocco, triple gilt fillet on sides, flat spine gold-tooled and -lettered, gilt edges (joints and extremities scuffed, spine a trifle faded).*** Counterfeit edition of a meditation on suicide by one of the founders of Jansenism. Reputedly inspired by musings of Henri IV, reported to the author by a friend at court, this work is an apology for the morality of suicide under special circumstances, namely to save the life of one's sovereign. Du Vergier's arguments include over 30 examples of justifiable suicide. Considered by most a youthful jeu d'esprit, for the Jesuits the essay was pure casuistry and a "horror." This counterfeit edition, deliberately intended to deceive, repeats the foliation errors of the original edition and contains the Privilege du Roy; but it is embellished with a title woodcut which distinguishes it easily from the first edition (which instead bears Du Bray's device, a hand holding a sheaf of grain), and is printed on mid-eighteenth-century Limousin paper (carré raisin fin). The counterfeit may have been published by the Jesuits as ammunition against Duvergier de Hauranne (cf. F. Martin, Angélique Arnauld abbess of Port Royal, 1873, pp. 185-6). Of the dozen N. American libraries holding this title, all except Houghton (which holds a copy of the true first edition) take the imprint at its face value. The binding may be a "publishe … [Click Below for Full Description]

MAURICEAU, François.
First edition, the copy of Maurice Villaret, of the book which "established obstetrics as a science" (G&M). This was the outstanding textbook of the time, the first important textbook of obstetrics for nearly sixty years (since that of Jacques Guillemeau in 1609), and the first important obstetrical text to be published in five vernacular languages as well as Latin.<br/><br/> Grolier, <i>One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine</i> 33; Lilly, <i>Notable Medical Books</i> 85; Norman 1461; Garrison-Morton 6147. <br/><br/> "Perhaps the first obstetric text in the modern sense, Mauriceau's <i>Maladies des femmes grosses et accouchees</i> established obstetrics as a science and as a separate medical specialty. Through its various translations, it exercised a dominant influence on seventeenth-century obstetrical practice. <br/> "Following the introduction, which describes anatomic landmarks, the work is divided into three sections dealing with diseases and abnormalities from conception to the end of pregnancy, normal childbirth, and the care of the mother and newborn infant, including the choice of a suitable wet nurse. Among the important new ideas presented in Mauriceau's work were the delivery of women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, treatment of the various gestational periods, and discussions of many difficult cases. He also presented an analysis of the mechanism of labor and maintained that during labor the uterus is the active agent while the fetus plays a passive role. He gave the earliest account of the prevention of congenital syphilis by antisyphilitic treatment … [Click Below for Full Description]
