[Colophon:] Hanau, Wilhelm Antonius, 1609 - Folio (300 x 190 mm), pp 60; 222, [2, colophon and blank], with engraved title, engraved portrait of the author, 10 engraved plates, 9 double-page, and two double-page tables; a fine copy, without the usual browning, title just slightly toned, unpressed in contemporary German yapped vellum with ties, titled in ink on spine, blue edges. £25,000A fine copy of the first complete edition (the work first appeared in Hamburg in 1595, with only four plates; only three copies, Darmstadt, Basle, and Wisconsin, are known). The Amphitheathrum is 'one of the most important books in the whole literature of theosophical alchemy and the occult sciences'. 'It may justly be referred to as one of the best-known alchemical works: the plates with which it is illustrated are remarkable both for their subject-matter and their execution. The particular plate showing the adept (probably the author himself) praying in his laboratory has been reproduced in all recent books dealing with alchemy as well as dealing with the history of chemistry' (Duveen, 'Notes on some alchemical books', The Library, 5th series, 1 p 56).Khunrath 'believed himself to be an adept of various spiritual traditions of alchemy dominated by the Paracelsian belief in the divine science of medicine as a privilege of the initiated (scientia arcanorum). Beginning with his twenty-eight doctoral theses (defended at Basel on 24 August 1588) he used the then modern Neoplatonic combination of heavenly and earthly processes to develop his ideas of Christianized natural magic (Divino-Magicum). On the other hand, he held experience alone to be decisive against the opinions of the great philosophers. With this union of theosophical experience and experience from natural observations he tried to shape what was then called physicochemica, that is, a chemical art grounded on general principles and practised by the physicochemici. They used the artificial method, that is, the application of chemical means to obtain reactions from natural substances, and took as a basis the three principles sulfur, salt, and mercury, together with essentia. The last he made equivalent to the Mosaic "Ruach Elohim," to the Hermetic anima mundi, to the philosophers' forma, and to the essentia quinta of the doctrine of elements.'Khunrath ardently sought to find and demonstrate the secret, divine primary matter endowed with the universal virtue of ruling all natural processes . These efforts would, he claimed, afford eternal wisdom. Medical and chemical operations have to be undertaken, he stated, first under the guidance of God, then of Jesus Christ, and finally through the three methods called Christiano-Kabalice, Divino-Magice, and Physico-Chymice. Through prayer and work the theosopher has to implement them. The relation to God was an essential feature of the chemistry of Khunrath's time. On 1 February 1625 Khunrath's Amphitheatrum was condemned by the Sorbonne for its mixture of Christianity and magic' (DSB).Jan Diricks van Campen signed Khunrath's portrait included in the volume, and probably also engraved the title page and the rectangular double-page plates. The four circular plates, which first appeared in the 1595 edition, were engraved by Paullus vander Doort of Antwerp. That of the alchemist praying in his laboratory was drawn by Hans Vredeman de Vries (1527-1604).The striking plates, for which this work is most noted, are as follows:1. Emblematic title, featuring twin obelisks and various alchemical and kabbalistic symbols, with title within a wreath surmounted by a small portrait of the author, dated 16022. Portrait of the author aged 42 holding a compass with the Bible open at the Psalms before him (Psalm 71.17), with dog, and with depictions of books and alchemical apparatus, acrostic verses below; engraved by Jan Diricks van Campen3. The Way of the Wise, leading to the 'Porta Ampitheatri Sapientiae Aeternae'. Double-page plate, with engraved text in Latin, dated 1602. The caption states that Khunrath d

Absent the French catalogs and the British Library. A vignette on the title page of the martyrdom of the unsigned loyalty Leonard Gautier depicting two lovers committed to the pillory on a burning pyre with many characters around. Bulletin du bibliophile Nodier and the chronological list of the editions of literary texts Droz only remember this year for these textes.Pleine Sheepskin brown vintage. Back tooled raised. Upper jaw split tail and head 6cm 2cm. Caps threadbare. The two novels are romantic tragedies, both preceded by a gallant and relatively ardent epistle to Madame de Lerm, Anne Calonges. Following the first novel, there is a series of poems which the last is a fundamentally erotic poem entitled enigma. ITE was a novelist Languedoc whose ornate and lyrical style is relatively complex. His way is relatively modern and original in the early seventeenth. Its literature seems nourished by Greek-Latin and Italian novelists of the sixteenth, but with a much more tragic and dramatic accent. His works we hastily classified as minor an important turning point for the history of baroque novel in France. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

It is illustrated with a magisterial title allegorical frontispiece engraved by Leonard Gaultier, here in the first draw, the bust of Ronsard crowned by Homer and Virgil, as well as Mars and Venus whose sex will be for other prints, veiled by a lock of hair. A portrait of Muret the back sheet of the sixth and two other portraits (the author and one woman) inset on the back of eighth sheet. A small working worm affecting the lower margin slice a few layers, some foxing and discreet restoration of paper (mainly on the frontispiece of the page). The original edition of the Collection of Sonnets, odes, hymns, elegies contains 132 pp in fine works.; we note with great interest the comments distributed to each constituent poems sonnets and odes by Belleau, or Richelet Muret, eloquent testimonies of contemporary poets including the Pleiades, and testimony of a medieval practice which was already in a writer of prose paraphrase a comment by his verse poem (Dante's Vita Nova of the fourteenth is a good example). Ronsard published his first "works" in 1560; From then until his death, he will work diligently to editing all of his works, but his body was so huge (besides correcting and rewriting) that many editions will come after his death in 1585, including pieces he chose himself subtract according to his ecclesiastical status and contemporary events.

Bartolomeo Cocchi, Bologna 1609 - (viii), 22, (2); (1), 42, (1) pp., with a woodcut title-vignette, one full-page woodcut, a woodcut tail-piece showing Mercury on verso of errata, and a full-page engraved plate; the first few leaves with small, old restoration to lower gutter; a very good copy in lacquered dark-green hard-grained cloth; upper cover gilt-lettered ¿Il Fiore della Granatiglia¿. Excellent. First edition of the Italian Dominican Simone Parlasca¿s rare treatise on this New World flower ¿ and the first work to contain an illustration of the plant. The passion flower was adopted as a Christian symbol because of its unique physical resemblance to the Arma Christi, the instruments of torture associated with the last days of Christ. The Spanish physician and botanist Nicolás Monardes was perhaps the first to call attention, in 1574, to the Christian symbols in the flower. Then between 1607 and 1610, several pamphlets on the plant¿s meaning suddenly appeared in Italy, including the present work. The work is organized into 3 discourses followed by a series of laudatory poems on the passion flower by various authors: Parlasca¿s first discorso describes the plant¿s origin and virtues; the second his interpretation of the plant¿s appearance, with references to Della Porta¿s Phytognomonica, José de Acosta, Alfonso d¿Armeria, and others; the third discorso is on the flower¿s Christian attributes. Some three-dozen poets contribute rhymes to the volume¿s second half, with the most notable being Claudio Achillini (d. 1640) and Ridolfo Campeggi (d. 1624). Of special interest is the inclusion of several verses penned by members of the Accademia dei Selvaggi (Academy of Wildmen), a poetry society founded in Bologna in 1606 by Giovanni Capponi that adopted its motto, ¿Un Suono Esprime,¿ from Tasso¿s Gerusalemme Liberata. Some of the Academici Selvaggi conceal their identities behind clubby nicknames such as the Strepitoso (the Boisterous One). An unsigned woodcut of the passion flower prefaces Parlasca¿s opening discourse and represents the first printed image of the plant. The surprising accuracy of this representation suggests that the depiction was made after dried samples of the flower as opposed to written descriptions (Kluger and King). A refined engraved copy of this image showing the flower in reverse prefaces the poetry section and cannot have been made much later than the woodcut. The print comes from the Venetian shop of Valegius (likely Francesco Valesio, active in Venice around 1610) and includes engraved text outlining the flower¿s significance. OCLC records a single US copy at Yale (with erroneous collation). * Kluger, E. and A.       THE BIBLE. THAT IS, THE HOLY SCRIPTURES CONTEINED IN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT . . . Lon: Robert Barker, 1609, irregular pagination. *** This was the most popular English language Bible in Europe during the latter 16th. Century. It was eclipsed by the King James translation, which was first published in 1611. To history this book is known as the Geneva Bible. It also acquired a nickname, "Breeches Bible," due to a short marginal annotation from Genesis 3:7 mentioning breeches made out of fig leafs in the Garden of Eden. The first edition of the complete Geneva Bible appeared in 1560. [Wikipedia]. *** The rest of the title is as follows ?" "Translated according to the Ebrew [sic] and Greeke, and conferred with the best Translations in diurs [sic] Languages." The holy texts are supplemented "With most profitable Annotations upon all hard places, and other things of great importance." *** This Bible contains three (3) major parts ?" Old Testament; New Testament; Booke of Psalmes. There are many other features. With two (2) maps in text, and a number of text illustrations, all from woodcuts. The two Testaments each have elaborately decorated title pages with vignettes of the apostles, saints, and emblems of the twelve tribes. *** Re-cased in full brown leather, the spine with three (3) raised bands and gilt lettering. New endpapers. The contents are complete in a good binding, clean with occasional light soil or foxing, overall age toning. Two leafs in Psalmes have fore edges chipped to borders of text with no loss of text. *** 8.75 " tall by 6.75 " ### Catalog THE BIBLE. CONDITION: .Vellum Covers are splitting for 1" at the top of the spine fold, have a 1"x1" piece of vellum missing from the bottom of the rear cover, are soiled / darkened / age toned, the spine has especially darkened making the manuscript spine title difficult to read, and there are remnants of a paper label to the bottom of the spine; nonetheless, the vellum covers are still attractive in a Harry Potter Hogwarts' Library way. Internally, the, front and rear hinges have split exposing the inner spine of the text block; there is a previous owner's name and date on the front pastedown "Ern. Zimmermann / Gerv. 1812"; there is a lovely circular red stamp of "Bucherei Friedelhausen" on the blank page facing the title page; several leaves in the Kirchmann work (the first work) have small pieces missing : the title-page has a small piece neatly cut out (perhaps removing a previous owner's name?); the bottom front margin area of pages 639/640 (Rr8) is torn away, affecting some text; the upper corners of pages 725/726, 729/730 and 731/732 (Zz3, Zz 5 & 6) are torn away, each affecting only a bit of text; there are some early relevant margin notes, in Latin; the pages are lightly browned / aged; there is some foxing, creasing, edge wear, here and there throughout; overall the inner pages of this approximately 400 year'old book are in remarkable shape, still tight, bright, clean, clear and fully legible. FOUR IMPORTANT WORKS - EACH VERY SCARCE ON ITS OWN. Copies of any of these four works are normally found in Rare Book Rooms of Major Universities and National Libraries (e.g. the Austrian National Library). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

First edition of the French translation, translated by François Bachou on Gemmarum and lapidarum historia (1609) of the Flemish doctor and naturalist Anselm of Boodt; is illustrated in Figures 45 woodcut-text and performs well both folding plates constituting the "gems Division & towns."Binding slightly later in full red morocco. Back with four ornate nerves, part of title of Havana morocco. Triple net gold bezel flat and golden florets spandrels. Gold lace surrounding contreplats. All edges gilt.Head cover slightly rubbed three corners lightly used. A tiny worm gallery reaching a wafer outer margin of the first notebooks, some pages browned, fine copy. Our copy is full of his errata sheet. In The Parfaict jeweler, Anselm of Boodt reviewed no less than 106 minerals and gems by considering the point of view of science (ranking hardness, composition ...) but also superstition (healing stones). His research is based both on ancient sources (Natural History of Pliny, Materia Medica of Dioscorides, Galen simple Drugs, De mineralibus Albert the Great ...) as the work of Renaissance scholars (Cesalpino, Gesner Scaliger particular). We find in this book practical information on the size of the stones and identifying counterfeit, a sum of mineralogical knowledge accumulated at the time, but an inventory of minerals-used therapeutically as well as a justification for their use, which are useful to both jewelers, naturalists and physicians. A useful catalog of all listed stone is placed at the top of the structure. Chez Jean-Antoine Huguetan A Lyon 1644 in-8 (11x17,5cm) (1f. tit.) (5p. épit.) (3p. préf.) (4p. avert.) (3p.) (12p. cata.) Near Fine Condition. 11 volumes bound in 5 in full crushed brown morocco, spine gilt in compartments, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, edges gilt, etc. Each volume with the bookplate of Comte Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac, the first volume with the bookplate of publisher Auguste-P. Garnier. A mixed set of the complete works of the prince of poets, dating from 1609-1630 as follows: I: Amours (Marthurin Henault, 1629); II: Les Odes du Roy Henry II (Nicolas Buon, 1609); III: Les Quatre Premiers livres de la Franciade (Nicolas Buon, 1617 - as are IV, V, VI); IV: Le Bocage Royale; V: Les Eclogues et Mascarades; VI: Les Elegies; VII: Les Hymnes (Samuel Tibout et Rolin Baraigne, 1630, as are the final volumes); VIII: Les Poemes; IX: Discours des miseres de ce temps; X: Les epitaphes de divers suiets; XI: Recueil des sonnets, odes, hymnes, et autres pieces Faint wear to the bindings, a few light surface marks, one tiny ink stain, nearly fine, overall. Scattered very minor foxing and browning internally, missing a few blanks but otherwise fine and complete. With a number of portraits, mostly of Ronsard, and attractively printed with headpieces and historiated initials. Each with a separate title page save X which has a half title - the spines labeled I-X, perhaps as a result of this. A lovely set, bound by David of Paris (though not marked as such) and likely bound for Montesquiou, a major Symbolist and a hugely influential figure in turn of the century Paris. A dandy, flaneur and reputedly the inspiration for a variety of literary figures, most famously Proust's Baron de Charlus. Size: duodecimo (12mo). 11-volume set (complete). Quantity Available: 1.         Les essais de Michel seigneur de Montaigne

Leyden" [but Geneva]: by Jean Doreau,, 1609. Edition nouvelle, prise sur l'exemplaire trouve apres le deces de l'Autheur. Reveu & augmenté d'un tiers outre les precedentes impressions. Octavo (171 × 104 mm), pp. [8], 1031, [1] bl., [64], index bound at end; collates: a4 A?-3S8 3T4 a?-d8 (d8 blank). Contemporary vellum, title inked on spine, ties missing. Publisher's woodcut device to title (with the Latin motto "Ferro acuitur ferrum" ["Iron sharpens iron"]). Contemporary ownership inscription on title, binding used but sound, scattered minor worming (affecting a few words but generally unobtrusive). Rare early edition of one of the cornerstones of Western thought, first published in 1580; Copac locates only 2 copies (Oxford, Cambridge), and another 10 are added by OCLC. It is a reprint of the earlier 1602 Leyden edition, but with the useful addition of an index. However, Sayce and Maskell have established that "Leyden" is a false imprint and that the edition was actually printed at Geneva. "Montaigne devised the essay form in which to express his personal convictions and private meditations, a form in which he can hardly be said to have been anticipated. The most elaborate essay, the Apologie de Raimond Sebonde [pp. 379-546 in the present edition], is second to no other modern writing in attacking fanaticism and pleading for tolerance. He finds a place in the present canon, however, chiefly for his consummate representation of the enlightened scepticism of the sixteenth century, to which Bacon, Descartes, and Newton were to provide the answers in the next" (Printing and the Mind of Man 95).

        Question royalle et sa décision

?"Paris: 1609?" [i.e., mid-18th century]. 12mo (161 x 99 mm). [1], 56 (recte 65) ff. Woodcut title vignette (harvesting scene with lion at top), woodcut headpiece and initial. 18th-century French olive morocco, triple gilt fillet on sides, flat spine gold-tooled and -lettered, gilt edges (joints and extremities scuffed, spine a trifle faded).*** Counterfeit edition of the first published work by of one of the founders of Jansenism. Reputedly inspired by musings of Henri IV, reported to the author by a friend at court, this work is an apology for the morality of suicide under special circumstances, namely to save the life of one?'s sovereign. Du Vergier?'s arguments include over 30 examples of justifiable suicide. Considered by most a youthful jeu d?'esprit, for the Jesuits the essay was pure casuistry and a ?"horror.?" This counterfeit edition, deliberately intended to deceive, repeats the foliation errors of the original edition and contains the Privilege du Roy; but it is embellished with a title woodcut which distinguishes it easily from the first edition (which instead bears Du Bray?'s device, a hand holding a sheaf of grain), and above all is printed on mid-eighteenth-century Limousin carré raisin fin paper. The counterfeit may have been published by the Jesuits as ammunition against Duvergier de Hauranne (cf. F. Martin, Angélique Arnauld abbess of Port Royal, 1873, pp. 185-6). Of the dozen N. American libraries holding this title, all except Houghton (which holds a copy of the true first edition) take the imprint at its face value and make no mention in their catalogues of the counterfeit edition. Barbier III, 1155; Brunet IV, 1014; Arbour, Un éditeur d'oeuvres littéraires au XVIIe siècle: Toussaint Du Bray (Geneva, 1992), pp. 37, 195 (not mentioning the counterfeit, conflating it with the first edition).

Seconds rare editions of both novels Jean D'Intras Bazas, published respectively in 1604 and 1603 only the BN France has a copy of the original editions and second editions. His works we hastily classified as minor an important turning point for the history of baroque novel in France. chez Robert Fouet.         A generall historie of the Netherlands

London: A. Islip and G. Eld, 1609 With engraved title and 56 large text engravings by Christoffel von Sichem. Woodcut chapter initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary mottled calf, unobtrusive restorations to head and foot of spine; some intermittent light dampstaining to top and fore-edges affecting some text and a tiny part of engraved title, inking to preliminaries and some margins with contemporary marginalia. From the library of Charles Tyler Prouty, with his bookplate. First edition, second issue of this elaborate work on the Netherlands. After the first chapter dealing with general history, the author details the lives, loves and politics of the rulers and nobility in the Netherlands from the start of the fourteenth century through 1608. The wonderful engravings illustrate many of these individuals, including William II, 18th Earle of Holland and Zeeland; Mary of Austria, Queen Dowager of Hungary and sister to Emperor Charles V; Ferdinando Alvards of Toledo, Duke of Alva, Lieutenant Governor and Captain General of the Netherlands for Philip II of Spain; Queen Elizabeth; Charles II of Austria; and William V of Bavaria. Little is known of Grimeston (d. 1610), whose family served the English government in France. He was an English translator of numerous related works, including histories of France, Spain, the East and West Indies, and Turkey. George Chapman, Elizabethan poet and writer for the stage, was a close relative of Grimeston, who apparently used many of his histories as research and background for his theatrical works.

First edition, the copy of Maurice Villaret, of the book which "established obstetrics as a science" (G&M). This was the outstanding textbook of the time, the first important textbook of obstetrics for nearly sixty years (since that of Jacques Guillemeau in 1609), and the first important obstetrical text to be published in five vernacular languages as well as Latin.<br/><br/> Grolier, <i>One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine</i> 33; Lilly, <i>Notable Medical Books</i> 85; Norman 1461; Garrison-Morton 6147. <br/><br/> "Perhaps the first obstetric text in the modern sense, Mauriceau's <i>Maladies des femmes grosses et accouchees</i> established obstetrics as a science and as a separate medical specialty. Through its various translations, it exercised a dominant influence on seventeenth-century obstetrical practice. <br/> "Following the introduction, which describes anatomic landmarks, the work is divided into three sections dealing with diseases and abnormalities from conception to the end of pregnancy, normal childbirth, and the care of the mother and newborn infant, including the choice of a suitable wet nurse. Among the important new ideas presented in Mauriceau's work were the delivery of women in bed rather than in the obstetric chair, treatment of the various gestational periods, and discussions of many difficult cases. He also presented an analysis of the mechanism of labor and maintained that during labor the uterus is the active agent while the fetus plays a passive role. He gave the earliest account of the prevention of congenital syphilis by antisyphilitic treatment during pregnancy. He was also the first to refer to tubal pregnancy, complications of prolapse of the umbilical cord, and epidemic puerperal fever. <br/> "Mauriceau practiced podalic version but condemned both cephalic version and cesarean section. He gave rules for the management of placenta previa and advanced the concept of primary repair of perineal lacerations. Mauriceau discredited the observation of Ambroise Pare and others that the pubic bones separated during childbirth. He also denied that the uterus contains two cavities and that the amniotic Ruid is an accumulation of menstrual blood or milk. He argued against the common misconceptions that a child born at seven months' gestation had a greater chance of survival than one born at eight months and that a woman can give birth to only two children at a time because of the presence of two breasts. In the third edition (1681) he first described management of the aftercoming head in breech delivery with the aid of an index finger in the infant's mouth, a technique now called the 'Mauriceau-Smellie-Viet' maneuver. <br/> "Mauriceau's book went through three more editions in his lifetime (1675, 1681, 1694) and was translated into English (1673), German (1680), Latin (1681; by the author), Dutch (1683), and Italian (1684). The English translation was prepared by Hugh Chamberlen the elder (b. 1630), of the famous Huguenot family that succeeded in maintaining a monopoly on the use of the obstetric forceps for nearly two centuries. (Grolier/Medicine).<br/><br/> <i>Provenance:</i> Book plate of the Dr. Maurice Villaret to front paste down. "Maurice Villaret (1877 - 1946) was a French neurologist born in Paris. In 1906 he received his medical doctorate from the University of Paris. In 1919 he became <i>médecin des hôpitaux</i> in Paris, and subsequently served as <i>médecin chef</i> at the Hôpital Necker. In 1927 he became a professor of hydrotherapy and climatology, and in 1939 was appointed clinical professor at the Hôpital Broussais. He is remembered for his studies and experiments involving precision localization of vascular lesions of the brain. In 1917 he described what was to become known as 'Villaret's syndrome'... With his mentor Augustin Nicolas Gilbert (1858-1927), Villaret performed extensive research involving the physiology of the portal venous system, and had particular interest in the causes of portal hypertension. He also undertook several pathological studies of cirrhosis." (Wikipedia).. 4to (240 x 175 mm), pp. [xxiv], 536, engraved title by Vallet after Paillet incorporating a portrait of the author.         Iutia Septentrionalis.
