Venice: Nicolas Misserino, 1609. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Large folio (410 x 272 mm), [10], 3-346, [18] pp., including engraved title and 33 full-page engravings within page numbering. Signatures: a? A-2X? 2Y?. Errata and colophon on 2Y6r. Contemporary vellum, spine and lower edge lettered in ink (head of spine chipped, extremities a bit rubbed). Housed in a custom-made clamshell box. Internally crisp and unmarked, with minor spotting in places; some brown ink smudges to upper- and fore-edge affecting outer margins of a few leaves, light dampstain to lower corner. Provenance: Michele Raby, Torino (large armorial bookplate to front pastedown). An outstanding copy in original binding and with ample margins of one of the rarest of all important 17th century anatomical works. ----NLM/Krivatsy 2200; Waller 1810; not in Cushing, Osler, Wellcome, or Norman. - EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION of Casserius' second important contribution to the comparative anatomy not only of the ear and the vocal organs, as in his work of 1600/01, but also of the other four sense organs and especially of the EYE. This first edition of Pentaestheseion is much rarer than the Ferrara, 1601, De Vocis on the ear and voice, and in fact so rare that Choulant-Frank never saw a copy. They note: "The original edition is said to have contained a copper-title and thirty-three plates...," and proceed to describe the Frankfurt edition of 1622, with the same number of plates but "reduced and certainly executed by another artist. Some of them are even reversed and show much inferior workmanship" (p. 224). The very fine anatomical plates for which this book is noted are both drawn and engraved by the Swiss artist Joseph Maurer, a pupil of Tobias Stimmer who lived in Casserius' house. The 12 plates pertaining to the ear are the same as those of Casserius' earlier work; they constitute "the first accurate pictorial presentation of the internal ear" (Lyle M. Sellers, Annals of Otology, LXVIII, No. 3, Sept. 1959). Those dealing with the other four sense organs are new. Among them, in the especially important section dealing with the EYE and VISION (pp. 257-346) are the first pictorial representations of the conjunctival glands, later known as the Meibomian glands (cf. Garrison-Morton 1481). All the plates, according to Choulant-Frank, "are done with unusual care and are anatomically exact." Casserius' anatomy of the sense organs is of great importance in medical history, since for the first time he adds to a complete account of each human organ a full study of the same organ in various animal forms. OCLC/WorldCat list the following copies in US libraries: McGoogan Library of Medicine, Nebraska; Bernard Becker Medical Library, St. Louis; Cornell University Library, Ithaca; Huntington Library, Art Collections & Botanical Gardens; University of Southern California, Norris Medical Library, LA. Very Good.

"Few narratives are written with so much judgment and elegance. one of the most important works for the history of the Philippine Islands". (Cox I, 284).Includes references to Japan, China & South America. Folio; XVIII century calf. FIRST EDITION OF THIS HISTORY OF SPAIN'S FIGHT FOR CONTROL OF THE MOLUCCAS. Regarded by Hill as an "essential work for the history of Spanish and Portuguese exploration in the East Indies," Argensolas's narrative is noted for its breadth of knowledge and over- all grasp of world politics. "In his digressions on people and places, (writes Lach in Asia in the making of Europe, III, pp. 311-12), Argensola adds significantly to the stockpile of information on Asia, especially on the Moluccas, Java, Sumatra, and Ceylon. His book also ties together neatly the affairs of Europe with struggles in the overseas areas, for he sees the spice trade in its world wide ramifications and makes his reader acutely aware of its immediate and potential interest for Japan and China." There are also in this work numerous American references including the voyage of Sir Francis Drake (pp.105 - 108), Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa’s voyage of exploration to the Straits of Magellan (pp.119 - 131), special mention of Peru, the Patagonian giants, and Columbus. Argensola (1562 - 1631), royal chaplain and rector of Villahermosa, was commissioned to write this highly praised work by the Council of the Indies on the occasion of the Spanish recapture of the Moluccan islands of Ternate and Tidore in 1606. It is based on primary sources consulted in the archives of the Indies and thus comprises significant historical documentation. 1 volumen(es)/volume(s) (10) + 407 páginas [Attributes: First Edition]

        Problematum Astronomicorum Libri Septem.

Venice: Bernardo Giunta & G.B. Ciotti, 1609. By the Greatest Influences on Galileo. First edition of the main astronomical work by one of the greatest influences on Galileo. "Guidobaldo was Galileo's patron and friend for twenty years and was possibly the greatest single influence on the mechanics of Galileo." (P. L. Rose in DSB). In this work, originally composed in the 1580s but published posthumously by his son, Guidobaldo deals with mathematical and observational astronomy and the improvement of astronomical instruments. "Guidobaldo helped to develop a number of mathematical instruments, including the proportional compass, the elliptical compass, and a device for dividing the circle into degrees, minutes, and seconds [described and illustrated in this work]." (DSB). "In general Guidobaldo's attitude to mathematical instruments paralleled his attitude towards machines. Through these material devices, he felt, abstract mathematical truth could be made completely visible." (Rose, The Italian Renaissance of Mathematics, p.224). Guidobaldo del Monte (1545-1607) studied mathematics at Padua and later at Urbino. He became the friend and pupil of Frederico Commandino, whose translation of Pappus he edited and published. His "first book, the 'Liber mechanicorum' (1577), was regarded by contemporaries as the greatest work on statics since the Greeks. [And his 'Perspectivae libri sex' (1600)] the best Renaissance study of perspective ...Guidobaldo was Galileo's patron and friend for twenty years and was possibly the greatest single influence on the mechanics of Galileo. In addition to giving Galileo advice on statics, Guidobaldo discussed projectile motion with him, and both scientists reportedly conducted experiments together on the trajectories of cannonballs. In Guidobaldo's notebook (Paris MS 10246), written before 1607, it is asserted that projectiles follow parabolic paths; that this path is similar to the inverted parabola (actually a catenary) which is formed by the slack of a rope held horizontally; and that an inked ball that is rolled sideways over a near perpendicular plane will mark out such a parabola. Remarkably the same two examples are cited by Galileo at the end of the Two New Sciences, although only as postscripts to his main proof--which is based on the law of free fall--of the parabolic trajectory." (DSB). Ricardi I 180; Houzeau & Lancaster 2912. Folio (232 x210 mm), ff [6] 128 (numerous mispaginations but fully complete); with large engraved celestial sphere on title and numerous woodcut diagrams in text; slight water stain on outer margin of title and the next 12 leaves; a fine copy in contemporary stiff vellum.

A quiet and sober reckoning with M. Thomas Morton somewhat set in choler by his aduersary P.R. concerning certaine imputations of wilfull falsities obiected to the said T.M. in a treatise of P.R. intituled Of Mitigation.

[St. Omer: English College Press], 1609. 4to (17.8 cm; 7"). [20] ff., 688 pp., [8] ff. Ardent controversialist Parsons takes aim at Morton, who in his A preamble unto an encounter with P.R. had challenged Parsons' previous work, and fires stinging accusations of inaccurate source-quoting, hypocrisy, and general lack of understanding. He defends his theories of equivocation and rebellion with great gusto and enough force to make one wonder just how vitriolic the work might have been had Parsons not been operating, as he repeatedly points out, under his "quiet and sober" heading. No doubt this response hardly improved Mr. Morton's temper — the phrase "a Satanicall and damnable lyar" enters into play, although to give Parsons his due, it does seem to have come from Morton first.    Provenance: The 19th-century joint bookplate of the Rev.

Alcuni marginali antichi all'ultima c. di indice.

First French translation by Jean Baudoin from the original in Spanish published in 1609 in Lisbon. This translation only concerns the first part of the royal Comment, the second apparently never been translated. The frontispiece is in the upper Peruvian city, probably Cuzco, which is represented in a procession celebrating the various forces of nature. In the lower part, two designated Incas Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo frame the title and overcome two thumbnails representing one side of the jewels and the other a caravel. The board is usually signed ML (here L. was cleared) for Michel Lasne, French engraver and draftsman who was particular student of Rubens. Bound in full vellum, back three nerves decorated the head of a title manuscript pen, corners very lightly bumped. Waterstains small head and tail of the padding on the entire structure, gallery to between 867-977 pages 1269-1286 and slightly affecting places numbering notebooks but not the text. The frontispiece of the text summarizes the issues by showing the richness of a land conquered by the Spanish while highlighting the outstanding figures of Peruvian history. Indeed, the man left, Manco Capac is traditionally considered the first emperor of the Incas in Cuzco; Mama Ocllo would, in turn, his wife. By placing the head of his work both mythical figures of the founding of the Inca civilization, Garcilaso de la Vega (1539-1616) affirms its willingness to go back to the almost mythological origins of the Peruvian people. Itself illegitimate child of a conquistador and an Inca princess after the line Capac, raised in two different cultures, the Vega offers a history of the Incas before and during the Spanish conquest, while stressing its privileged position as a direct witness of the events. As he points out in his address to the reader, the historians who preceded him "have obscurely Traitté [es]" certain things he considers essential to understand the history of Peru. On the contrary, he "native of Peru, and perfectly instructed in the language of the Court, who spoke of his time in Cuzco, where he spent the best part of his age" has also the advantage of practicing history methodological and serious manner ( "in doubtful matters, he never provides anything"). Above all, this is the time for a single testimony on Peruvian history to the extent that the author does not privilege a Eurocentric vision, unlike his contemporaries, but regularly takes as through the eyes of the Indians concerned their own history. The fact remains that his book is still used as a reference source by historians of Latin America. French Edition of a major text on the history of the Inca civilization.Chez Augustin Courbé à Paris 1633 in-4 (16x23cm) (2f.) (44p.) 1319pp. (32p.)

(NDB XVII, 281ff). - Die Titelvignette dieser späteren Ausgabe stach E.         Quis Dives Salvus, Salviani Massiliensis Presbyteri Adversus...

1609. Give to the Church, Not to Your Children Salvian (Salvianus) [c.390-c.484 CE]. Macherentinus, Johannes [1540-1610], Editor. Quis Dives Salvus. Salviani Massiliensis Presbyteri Adversus Avaritiam Sub Nomine Timothei, Ad Ecclesiam Catholicam Epistolares Libri Quatuor Vere Aurei, Digniq[ue] qui in Omnium Linguas Transferantur Nunc Primum In Certa Capita Distincti, Scholiis Marginalibus, Atq[ue] Annotatione Consensus Sanctorum Patrum Illustrati: Per Joannem Macherentinum de Societate Jesu Theologum. Trier: Ex Officina Typographica Henrici Bock, 1609. 28, 226, [10] pp. Quarto (7-1/4" x 6-1/4"). Contemporary flexible vellum, later lettering piece to spine, ties lacking. Light rubbing to extremities, some soiling and spotting, vellum just beginning to crack through pastedowns. Title printed within woodcut typographical border, woodcut head-pieces, tail-pieces and decorated initials. Moderate toning to text, light foxing to a few leaves. Early annotations to endleaves, interior otherwise clean. * First edition (by Macherentinus). Salvian of Gaul was an important Christian thinker and canonist of the fifth century. Enhanced with arguments drawn from canon law, his Adversus Avaritiam outlines reasons to give alms to the church. More interesting, it says parents should bequeath their estates to the Church rather than their children; It is better for children to suffer want in this world to save their parents from damnation in the next. Salvian also has much to say on the duty of self-denial by priests, nuns and monks. Macherentinus, the editor of this edition, was a Jesuit theologian.

        Paesaggio con pesca all'anatra

1609. Acquaforte, 1609, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a sinistra. Etching, 1609, signed and dated on lower left. Example in the first state of two, before the address of Giovani Giacomo de Rossi was added. Beautiful work, printed on contemporary laid paper with "Easter lamb in double circle with letters A and N" watermark (centre Italy, first half of the XVII century), irregularly trimmed to platemark or with thin margins, light abrasion on verso, otherwise in excellent condition. The real identity of this artist is unknown; there are but a few evidences in the catalogue called Indice delle Stampe de'Rossi, where is mentioned the selling of "esemplari da scivere delli Antonozzi, libro in 27 mezzi fogli reali intagliati a bulino". The same catalogue of the De Rossi workshop put for sale also the "Vedute di varj Paesi, invenzioni di Paolo Brilli, intaglio in acquaforte libro in 8 quarti fogli reali in ottangoli" and "Vedute di Paesi, invenzione di Remigio Cantagallina, in quattro quarti in ottavo di foglio reale". Very likely, the work we present hereby comes from the last series of eight landscapes, deriving from Cantagallina's production, whose style and etching technique Antonozzi copied. A second state, with the address of De Rossi, has been recently mentioned in the catalogue of the Pazzaglia Galley in Urbino. Extremely rare work. Indice delle Stampe de' Rossi pp. 85 e 92.         The art of dyalling in two parts

London, Simon Waterson, 1609. 4to, (x), 152 [150 with some mispaginations ; lack the final blanck] ; 17th English calf (joints carcked but solid) First edition, very rare, of one of the earliest English books on dialing by the prominent Tudor mathematician and instrument maker, John Blagrave. If Blagrave is particulary concentrating on the myriad ways of dividing a dial on a flat or curved surface, on different walls for different degrees and latittudes, the numerous diagrams who realized are similar to the dials we see on the different ivory face of portable dyptich sundial built at the same period. Same thing for the curved dials, exactly similar with the small rounded and curved portable sundial built in wood or ivory during the first half of 17th century. So, a rare early vernacular documentation on the instruments now so highly collectable. "Like many mathematical practitioners, Blagrave found steady employment in designing, erecting and repairing sundials for churches, mansions and gardens. And since dialling was a favourite amateur pursuit, a text-book and a teacher were always in demand. Blagrave is exceptionally clear and practical, and explains the various ways in which the meridian can be established by relative positions of prominent stars or with simple improvised instruments" (Taylor, Mathematical Practitioners, p.327). Scarce condition for an English book in its first nice binding, unrestored.

The Holie Bible faithfully translated into English, out of the authentical Latin. Diligently conferred with the Hebrew, Greeke, and other editions in divers languages. With arguments of the bookes, and chapters: annotations: tables: and other helpes, for better understanding of the text: for discoverie of corruptions in some late translations: and for clearing controversies in religion. By the English College of Doway.

Doway: Laurence Kellam 4to (I: 22.3 cm, 8.75"; II: 21 cm, 8.3"). 2 vols. I: [2], 1115, [1] pp. (5 leaves supplied). II: 1124, [2 (errata)] pp. (5 leaves in facsimile).. 1609?10 First edition of the first Catholic Old Testament in English ? editio princeps of the Douai (or Douay, or Doway) Old Testament, half of what is commonly known as the Douai?Rheims Bible. The New Testament first appeared at Rheims in 1582; at that time the Old Testament was said to be ready for printing, but its actual publication was delayed until 1609 due to lack of funds. Both portions were translated from the Latin Vulgate mainly by Gregory Martin (with the intensely controversial Old Testament notes done by Thomas Worthington), under the supervision of Cardinal William Allen at Douai, the center of English Catholicism in exile during Elizabeth's reimposition of Protestantism. This translation is important for all, not just Catholics, as an enduringly influential milestone in Bible history. => One of the foundational works in any collection of Bibles and Testaments. Evidence of Readership / Provenance: Vol. I front free endpaper with early inked inscription: "Cloister of Nazareth"; pastedown with inscription in a different hand, reading "The holy Bible some pages cut out, (for modesty's sake) thro' ignorance yt. each word hear in [sic] is sacred, & too sacred for such, as finds thmselves unfit to read it." Vol. II front pastedown inscribed "Men have many faults / Women have but two / Nothing wright thay say / Nothing good they doo" [sic], signed by the Rev. Folkins of Derbyshire, dated MDCCCX; back pastedown with inked inscription of John Caldwell and pencilled inscription of Thomas R. Kilching. Vol. I: Contemporary vellum with yapp edges, spine with early hand-inked title; vellum moderately dust-soiled and worn, spine with remnants of shelving label. Vol. II: Contemporary mottled calf framed in gilt double fillets, spine with gilt rules; rubbed with small cracks in leather overall, especially at joints and spine, very unobtrusively rebacked. Inscriptions and annotations as above, vol. II also with pencilled annotations on front pastedown and bookseller's small ticket on rear pastedown. Sometime after the "immodest" pages (in Genesis) were removed, they were supplied from another copy, tipped in (so one can readily see what they were!); five lacking leaves in vol. II (in appended historical table and index) were supplied in facsimile. Occasional minor foxing and smudging; vol. II with waterstaining to some outer and lower edges, edges of first and last few leaves slightly tattered. => A landmark Old Testament, here in an intriguing copy.

Hauser, IV 2627. Bel exemplaire.

Delle guerre di Fiandra libri VI . Posti in luce da Gioseppe Gamurini .

Antwerp, Joachim Trognesius, 1609 - Giustiniano, Pompeo. Delle guerre di Fiandra libri VI . Posti in luce da Gioseppe Gamurini . Antwerp, Joachim Trognesius, 1609. 4to. [4] + 329 + [18]p. Roman & Italic. With engraved architectural title and 29 engraved folding plates. Woodcut ornaments and initials. Contemporary limp vellum. First edition of a professional soldier’s eyewitness report on battles and sieges conducted during the Spanish campaign in Flanders (1601-1609) valued for its historical accuracy and its literary merit. It is the only work on the military operations from the Spanish side. Giustiniano (1569-1616) was a Ligurian mercenary soldier serving under Ambrosio Spinola, commander of the Spanish forces fighting for the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. The chief event of the campaign here described was the three-and-a half year siege of Ostend when the author acted as quarter master general. The city was the last Dutch coastal fortress to surrender to Spinola in 1604. The work is remarkable for its excellent engraved folding plates include maps, town plans, pontoon bridges and dykes, sieges and troop movements in various locations. The editor, Giuseppe Gamurini, also translated a Latin edition published the same year. Giustinano reached the rank of colonel, and was appointed war counsellor to the ‘Catholic King’; he lost an arm during the siege of Antwerp, replaced it with an artificial limb, and was nicknamed ‘Bras de Fer’. He entered the Venetian service in 1613, became captain-general, and had an equestrian statue built in his honour in San Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Intermittent browning, mostly in text.
