GARNIER Robert
RITTER, Francis (died 1641).
[Nuremberg: Christoff Lochner, in Verlegung Balthasar Camoxen], 1607. Single sheet, float-mounted and framed (11 x 13 2/8 inches; 23 x 24 4/8 inches). A fine engraved map of the world by P. Troeschel on a gnomonic projection from the North Pole, this map is the central vignette surrounded by 10 others, the title in a frame surrounding the top central vignette of a wind dial, dated 1607, all surrounded by a decorative floriated border. FIRST EDITION, AND AN EXTREMELY RARE AND VERY UNUSUAL MAP, showing the world projected from the North Pole as if it were the table of a sundial, with the land masses drawn to scale in proportion to their distance from the Pole. The result is a very distorted, though mathematically correct, projection, which can be used to locate local sun time. First published as here in Ritter's "Speculum solis; das ist, Sonnenspiegel. Beschreibung unnd unterricht, derer in das kupffer gestochenen sonnenuhren, in welcher der gantze lauff der sonnen, unnd dess mondten durch deroselben schatten zu sehen ist", in the later edition of 1610 the map is much larger and was subsequently re-issued in that format. The other vignettes depict alternative ways in which other civilisations have recorded the passage of time. Shirley 270; Woodward, David. Edward Topsell
ondon-William Jaggard, 1607. Book. A very scarce first edition of this illustrated bestiary. Collated: Lacking pages A1-6, B1, B3-5, C2-3, D6, FF1-6, I5, M1, X2, 3H4, 3Y1-8. Title page in facsimile. Lacking the plate of Durer's Rhinoceros. Pages often misnumbered, as indicated above. A fascinating work, scarce in any form and containing many of the illustrations for which the work is famous. Edward Topsell was an English cleric and author. He is best remembered for this work and a secondary volume, The History of Serpents. Topsell's work covers both real and mythological animals, including a striking plate of the Manticore, a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a man. Topsell was not a naturalist himself, and his worked was derived from the authority of earlier works. In doing so, Topsell repeats various amusing and now obviously fantastic features of animals, including the misbelief that Apes are scared of snails, and that Elephants worship the sun and the moon. Likewise, Topsell includes accounts of mythological creatures, showing only some scepticism when it comes to the existence of the Hydra. With the bookplate of Humphry Primatt, a clergyman and advocate for animals. Primatt wrote on moral issues in natural philosophy, attacking unnecessary cruelty to animals including that inflicted through hunting and other sports. Primatt's argument, founded in the divine goodness of God, argued that as all animals were created by God, justice must extend to them as it does to humans. ZONCA, Vittorio
Padua, 1607. FIRST EDITION. Engraved title and 42 full-page engravings. Contemporary vellum, remnants of ties, title in ink on spine; signature and date (eighteenth century) crossed out on title, initials and notation to front and back paste-downs, very minor spotting and browning, overall an excellent copy. First edition. This was the first of many works detailing and illustrating machinery (including those by Ramelli, Besson, Strada, etc.), all based upon the unpublished Trattado di architectura by Francesco di Giorgio Martini (1439-1501). Indeed, according to Norman, even Leonardo da Vinci had owned and annotated a copy of Francesco's treatise. Zonca's images, copied by many later writers, include inventions for mills such as a water mill running silk-spinners and a water-powered grain mill operated on a boat moored in a river, copper plating and printing presses, a barbeque spit turned by gears and a windmill, as well as a perpetual motion machine. "The work is noted for containing the first printed illustration of a gig-mill for raising nap on cloth, and for spreading knowledge of the mangle" (Norman). Zonca (1568-1602) was an Italian mechanical engineer. His book on machines went through four editions, and some of the plates were even published in a 1627 Chinese work on European mechanical arts, Qiqi Tushuo by Johann Schreck and Wang Zheng.

Euclid - Clavius, Christophorus
Frankfurt, Nicolaus Hoffmann für Jonas Rhodius, 1607. 2 Bände. Ca. 19 x 11,5 cm (Band 1); Ca. 20 x 12 cm (Band 2). 64 Blätter, 671 Seiten; 680 Seiten. Beide Bände in 4. Ausgabe, noch zu Lebzeiten von Clavius (1537-1612) erschienenen. Vgl. Poggendorff I, 455. Jahrhunderts"." Band 1: Einbandrücken berieben, Eintrag auf Vorsatz (datiert 1787), leicht gebräunt. Band 2: Rücken alt erneuert (Pergamentrücken sehr spröde), Schließbänder fehlen, Monogrammstempel verso Titel.
