John Stow Early Printing
1607. Foxing: lost title page: writing of various names: wonderful decorated capitals and publisher's flourishes throughout. John Stow was an English historian who wrote several histories of events in British history including this 1607 version with additions and "a continuation of matters foreign and domestically" added by Edmund Howes, Chronicler. Dedicated to Sir Henry Rowe, Lord Mayor of London, Howes added little to Stow's comprehensive look back from "Brute sonne of Silius" to King James. Stow, as a historian, was known for his research. An interesting edition, this volume also has a great deal of history of its own: inside the front are several names, dates, various markings in pencil and ink while inside are occasional names written on the first page available (the dedication to Sir Henry) and others. inside the front is "October 13, 1720" in ink while there are pencil marks and notes above while below is "M.2.___24" and below, upside down, "Mr. Howler". on the facing page is a brief note at the upper right, "Oct. 1738./ye gift of my good friend y Revd/ Mr. Rich. Wooddson" with various pencil notes on the page. There is no title page but on the dedication page, there is writing along the outside margin that is illegible and/or faded. on page 1 is a name again, Martin (?) Leake. There are other occasional names, recurring maybe two or three times, written throughout, whether of the writer or copying the text is hard to determine. On page 546, just prior to Howes' introduction of King James, is written another name and a brief verse, difficult to make out. The text is … [Click Below for Full Description]

This edition of the atlas is augmented with an account of the East Indies by Italian astronomer, cartographer and mathematician, Giovanni Antonio Magini (1555-1617). The third part, also by Magini, is a relation of the Jesuit missions and their attempts to convert the indigenous peoples there to Christianity. Wytfliet's atlas had been an immediate success, and over the next two decades six more editions, including three with French text (as here) were published. PROVENANCE: Jean R. "Although the end of the Ptolemaic era was marked by Copernicus's revolutionary work, De revolutionibus (1543), it was not until the publication of Kepler's Astronomis nova (1609) and Galileo's Sidereus nuncius (1610) that the heliocentric theory began to achieve broader acknowledgement. Imaginibus in aes incisis, notisque illustrataEx officina Hieronymi Verdussen, Antverpiae (Antwerp) 1607, in-4 (18 x 23 cm), 213 pp. (1), contemporary vellumThe sought-after first edition, the only edition entirely in Latin - unlike the later editions - and illustrated with 103 full-page emblems copper engraved by C. A few images of nudity have been discretely erased.Contemporary vellum, ink title erased on spine, a small blue spot to upper cover. A little cockled. Several faint dampstains. Discreet marginal repairs to pages 107, 179 and 183.Otto van Veen's (1550-1629) first published work. Van Veen was a Mannerist painter, Flemish art theorist and Rubens' teacher. The work is made up of two series of plates intended to elucidate the moral meaning of theatrical symbols. Each plate has a maxim in capital letters, followed by a short poetical extract as well as an explanation in the guise of an extract from Horace or other Roman writers. An important work, in which images for the first time take precedence over the text, this emblem book shows Venius' talent for bringing together the Flemish pictorial tradition with Italian Mannerism. "Is it not he, among the unfairly forgotten masters of this age, who manages best to marry the individual note of Flemish realism with the ideal flower of Italian grace?" This re-issue of the same plate appearing here 1626, London by Purchase for his rare and monumental Relations of the World. Cartography by Hondius. Charming and uncommon early 17th century antique copper engraved miniature map. Text on reverse as always. Based on the Ortelius model, a vast bulbous protrusion for North America, Nurembega noted within New England. Nile source in Africa shown way deep in the south, a huge mythical southern continent occupies a large portion of the bottom of both spheres, from which Nova Guinea appears to emerge from. Right side margin has been reinforced on back with matching paper to strengthen and slightly extend (see scan of reverse of map). Slight shaved loss of engraved area along this edge neatline, most visible at the bottom in the scrolled border. Longitude and latitude graduations surround the map. Please see video.
