RICCI, Bartolomeo (1542-1613) – AMBROSI, Giuseppe – ZANETTI, Bartolomeo (fl.1608-1612)
Presso Bartolommeo Zanetti, Rome, 1607. 8vo (187 x 128mm). [iv] 160pp., verso of leaf 160 blank. Signatures: [ii], A (7), B-V (8). Engraved title-page depicting the four Evangelist writers and their symbols standing on architectural frame, engraver signed "C.C.F." Dedicated to Giuseppe Ambrosi. 158 (numbered 159) full-page engraved scenes and explanatory text with chapter numbers, printed within borders, with printed biblical text references in margins, on each facing page. The scenes are from the Old and New Testament with particular emphasis on the life of Christ. Later calf, marbled edges; (imperfect first quire wanting one page at 1 or 8; p.7 with paper repair slightly affecting imagery, only occasional foxing, margins trimmed; calf slightly rubbed). This book in Florence in 1838, by rear inscription pasted in perhaps from original binding. First Edition. The exceptional series of 158 engravings by an unidentified artist (possibly the same C.C.F.?), accompany the devotional text of the Jesuit priest, Bartolomeo Ricci (1542- 1613), yet the plentiful, fresh engravings stand alone as beautiful works of Christian art. The engravings also appeared in Ricci’s Vita D. N. Iesu Christi published in Rome the same year. In 1609, the Italian commentary on the Gospels appeared in another Rome edition for that title. A book of unusual design, the Considerationi is arranged to emphasize the images. Each page opening singularly completes a scene (text and image) of the Christian story ranging from the Creation, to the Annunciation, to the Transfiguration, to work of the disciples, mira … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ricci, Bartolomeo
Rome: Bartholome Zanetti, 1607. First edition. 8vo. [8], 160 leaves, including engraved title, 160 full- page engravings; and with 2 folding engraved maps (HOLY LAND & JERUSALEM) tipped in at rear (Jerusalem map detached). 20th-century full blue morocco, covers with triple gilt filet borders, gilt spine, raised bands, marbled endpapers, gilt turn-ins, a.e.g., by "I. Smeers". Pretty copy . Very rare and beautiful series of engravings by an unidentified artist, accompanying the text of the Jesuit priest, Bartolomeo Ricci (1542-1613), whose Italian commentary on the Gospels appeared in the same year. An unusual book in its design. Each page of text, facing an engraved plate, is laid out in variety of columns from one to four, or even in combinations of columns, to accommodate parallel presentations of the Gospels, and in a variety of type sizes, to fit each text to a single page. Ricci's work of the following year (1608), TRIUMPHVS IESU CHRISTI CRUCIFIXI, was printed by Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp, with engravings by the great Adrian Collaert. The artist-engraver of this beautiful series seems not to be recorded. OCLC locates only 7 copies worldwide (four in Germany, one in Spain, and in North America ,at the Bridwell Library); the Pierpont Morgan Library also holds a copy

DU BEC Jean
Paris: Chez Daniel Guillemot, 1607. à Paris: Chez Daniel Guillemot, 1607. Fine. Chez Daniel Guillemot, à Paris 1607, In 12 (8x14,3cm), (4f.) 207ff., relié.

The Venetian position was ably defended by a canon lawyer, Paolo Sarpi, who extended the matter to general principles defining separate secular and ecclesiastical spheres … [Click Below for Full Description]

LE TASSE (Torquato TASSO, dit) (1544-1595)
Viterbo, Girolamo Discepolo, 1607, petit in-8°, 6ff., 322pp., 2ff. (errata et 1 bl.) - Plein vélin d'époque. Tranches bleues.
