De Bry, Theodore
Uncommon early view of the city of Ceylon -now Sri Lanka-, shown from above, intricately engraved; it shows a fortification at the center of the city, flanked at East by a river, and giving an idea of the architecture of the town. Four men in local costumes, in civilian and war-like attires, also illustrate the image. The island was under Chinese control until 1505, when the Portuguese first made an attempt of colonization; in 1517 the colony became permanent until the arrival of the Dutch in the early years of the 17th century, led by Joris de Spilbergen; this view likely represents the city under Dutch rule. Following a period of unrest, the Dutch finally settled and ruled the island for almost two centuries. Published in De Bry's "Little Voyages", a collection of voyages to the East Indies.

Florio, Michelangelo:
Stampato appresso Richardo Pittore (d. i. Middelburgh, Schilders), 1607.. Mit Druckermarke auf Titel. 4 Bll., 378 (recte 322) S., 15 Bll. Prgt. d. Zt. mit handschriftl. Rückentitel. Lowndes III, 728; Brunet, Suppl. I, 507: "Ce livre est fort rare ei fort recherche en Angleterre". [Click Below for Full Description]

TOPSELL, Edward
London: printed by William Jaggard,, 1607 & 1608. 2 works bound in one volume, folio (324 × 217 mm). Late 19th-century polished calf by Lloyd, spine richly gilt in compartments, red morocco labels, sides ruled around in gilt with a French fillet, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Bookplates of Lord Battersea (1893), Thereze Mary Hope, and William Binns Cowper. Illustrated with woodcuts in the text throughout. FFB with the Gorgon title-vignette as usual, with variant settings B2r catchword "gers" and B6r line 1: "Crowne" as per the Harvard copy, and without the extra leaf inserted in only a few copies after F4 headed "The Picture of the vulger Bugill Folio 57". Joints lightly rubbed and front joint just started at head, short closed tears at foot of FFB title, B3, and B4, and in fore-edge of 3Y3; a few minor marks or stains but generally clean and fresh, a very good copy. First editions of two of the most impressive large illustrated books of the Jacobean era. Topsell's fantastical natural history was an avowedly spiritual reading of the book of nature; his "declared purpose in collecting together pictures of animals, and stories about their ways, is to entertain, to inform, and above all to edify. He envisages The Historie of Foure-Footed Beastes as suitable sabbath reading-matter in the godly home (epistle dedicatory, final paragraph)" (ODNB). Topsell relied heavily for both text and illustration on the Historia animalium of the mid-16th-century Swiss protestant encyclopaedist Conrad Gesner, but he added material from the English writers John Caius (on dogs), Thomas Blund … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mijangos, Juan de:
Mexico: En la Emprenta de Diego Lopez Daualos, 1607.. [16],562,[2]pp. Four full-page woodcuts. Quarto. 19th-century half morocco, spine gilt. Titlepage mounted. Lacks the final two leaves (tables). Worming at inner margins, affecting several letters. Light scattered soiling and wear. Several leaves loosening. Good. The Sir Thomas Phillipps copy. The first and only edition. (A 1626 edition is listed in many bibliographies, but no copy is known.) The work does not fall within the usual categories of books written in Nahuatl: it is not a collection of sermons, a grammar, a dictionary, a breviary, a liturgy, a DOCTRINA, or a catechism. Rather it is a large work of moral and theological philosophy written entirely in Nahuatl. The work is designed for use by both the educated Indians and the clergy working among the natives: it is designed to be an "espejo...en que pueden verse los padres, y tomar documento para acertar a doctrinar bien a sus hijos" (a "mirror..in which fathers can see themselves and take stock in order to be sure to teach their children correctly"). The word "padres" here means both "Priests" and "fathers" and the word "hijos" both "charges" and "children." The text, in the form of a dialogue between father and son, is considered a masterpiece of Nahuatl. Author Juan de Mijangos was born in Antequera, the capital of Oaxaca. He joined the Augustinian order and taught philosophy and theology at the University of Mexico. A leading expert in the local native languages, Mijangos taught and preached to the Indians in their native tongue. In addition to the present wor … [Click Below for Full Description]

["Of Marcus Valerius Martialis, the most prolific, if not the most excellent of epigrammatists, not much is known, save that he was born in the ancient kingdom of Aragon in Spain in AD 43. He went to Rome and was one of the Tribunes under the empire of Titus and Domitian, who held the poet in high esteem. He was displeased with the government of Trajan, and offended by his neglect of literature he returned to Bibilis, his native town in his 56th year. He soon after married and continued to reside their until his death." From Scribners Magazine August 1874.] The more usual imprint for this book is Michel Sonnius not Claude Morell which is the scarcer one. However it was not uncommon in this period that publishers and printers shared the costs of printing and often unsold quires were bought or simply used by business partners. This will explain the different title page for the same edition; Claude Morel and Michel Sonnius also had their printing shops in the same road, facilitating in this way business exchanges. ZUBLER, LEONHARD. - [INSTRUMENT FOR SURVEYING AND GUNNERY]
Basel, Ludwig Königs, 1607. 4to. Sewn as issued in later blank wrappers. Engraved ornamental title showing 2 geometers with instruments, on verso large engraved coat of arms (Henry Prince of Wales). (8),65,(2) pp. With 20 large engravings in the text. Printed on good paper, fine and clean. ¶ First edition, though a Latin translation appeared at the same time. Zubler was a prolific mathematician and instrument-maker in Zürich, and in this work he describes a triangulation instrument (depicted on a full-page engraving), invented by himself, and shows its use in different situations of practical surveying and military use in artistic settings. The triangulation instrument was able to provide measures for length, width, height and angles all at once, to be read on the scales on the baseline etc. The instrument has two arms and a baseline. By fixing the angle between the baseline and the pivoted arm, setting the sliding sight on the baseline arm to the scaled length of the baseline itself, and finally, from the second station, sighting across the two arms while moving the second sliding sight into alignment with the first sight and the target, the side of the triangle on the ground will be given with the position of the second sight, adjusted to the scale. The provision of a degree scale on a semicircular plate at the pivot permits other techniques involving angle measurements or setting the arms at right angles.Cockle: 947 (Latin ed.) - Poggendorff II:1420.
