Hippo, Augustine of; Pseudo-Augustine; Canterbury, Anselm of; Idiota (pseudonym for Raymundus Jordanus)
n.p. (Douai, France). Hardcover. B00KUDJXAA In Latin. 1607 n.p. (Douai, France), 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches tall x 2 1/4 inches thick full contemporary velum bound with yapped fore edges, hand lettered title in ink to spine, engraved title page of Augustine, 667, [23] pp. Vellum covers characteristically worn and soiled. 1692 ink prior owner mark to lower margin of title page. Lacking blank front free-endpaper, but otherwise quite complete. Scarce; OCLC locates no copies of this particular edition. An important early 17th century devotional collection, apparently edited by Augustinian scholar Georgius Colvenerius Winghanus (1564-1649), beginning with the Pseudo-Augustinian 'Meditations, Soliloquies and Manual of Augustine of Hippo,' and also including several popular works by Anselm of Canterbury (circa 1033-1109) and Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), as well as several short works by 'Idiota' (meant in the sense of a 'person of no consequence'), now widely acknowledged by scholars as the nom de plume of Augustinian Canon Regular Raymundus Jordanus. All these materials were intended to aid in the practice of private devotion by providing exemplary prayers and meditations, as well as sequences of confessional and homiletic material, prayer and scriptural exegesis. The Pseudo-Augustinian 'Meditations, Soliloquies and Manual' are particularly interesting. Numerous Latin and vernacular editions were printed in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries throughout Europe. It is now understood, however, that these books were not in fact written by Augustine of Hippo, but only attributed t … [Click Below for Full Description]

LANGENDIJK, Dirk.
- Muller, Ned. Historieplaten, 2261a; for Langendijk and Sallieth: Scheen, pp. 303 & 449. Large etched and engraved print showing the sensational and humiliating defeat of the English by the Dutch at the Battle of the Medway at Chatham, near Rochester. Langendijk places the viewer in the midst of the action, so that one sees the ships, people and the hand-to-hand combat on the rowboats in the foreground in the greatest detail. It was the decisive event of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, forcing the British to agree to end the war with a settlement favourable to the Dutch a month later. It was also the crowning achievement of the great Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter (1607-1676). The daring raid was planned by the Dutch Grand Pensionary Johan de Witt and carried out under command of Admiral De Ruyter, accompanied by De Witt's brother Cornelis.Trimmed down to the edges of the image and text, but without loss and in good condition, with only some traces of former mildew slightly affecting the caption and the water at the foot of the image, and a few tiny holes or small marginal tears repaired. The margins have been extended with Japanese paper. The most detailed and spectacular view of the Battle of the Medway.

DEMOSTHENE
***** A very beautiful prize binding from the Jesuite college of La Fleche. HONDIUS, Jodocus.
Amsterdam: 1607. Handcoloured copper engraving, 290 x 180 mm. (sheet size), with letterpress to verso; mounted. Beautiful decorated double-hemisphere map of the world from the Atlas Minor published by Jodocus Hondius in 1607. In 1604 Hondius and a business partner purchased the copper plates from Mercator's estate and continued to print grand atlas editions from them, supplementing the original plates with further maps of their own. A few years afterwards Hondius re-engraved the plates in a smaller format and published the Atlas Minor of 1607, of which this world map was the opening attraction.Hondius, born Joost de Hondt in 1563, was one of the foremost Flemish cartographers and engravers of his generation. From an early age he showed precocious ability in the geographical sciences, mathematics and a range of languages. Born into a Protestant family, Hondius was forced to flee for England in 1584, a move that played an important role in his career as a cartographic innovator. During his employment in London, Hondius met and conversed with leading explorers and scholars of the era, a valuable exchange that sharpened his geographical knowledge and curiosity. He eventually settled and flourished in Amsterdam, here publishing atlases and maps in several European languages. The letterpress to the reverse of this map is in English, and describes the discovery of the Straits of Magellan. As was common for the era, this map of the earth depicts an enormous antipodes filling the entire southern ocean. A few scant details derived from actual geographical discoveries are noted, such a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Therefore, it "is not in all copies" as Brunet says, which is the case of this copy and the one in Bibliotheque Nationale de France. Aristophanes c. 446 - c. 386 BC, known as the Father of Comedy, was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his forty plays survive virtually complete. These, together with fragments of some of his other plays, provide the only real examples of a genre of comic drama known as Old Comedy, and are used to define it. Aristophanes has been said to recreate the life of ancient Athens more convincingly than any other author. His powers of ridicule were feared and acknowledged by influential contemporaries; Plato singled out Aristophanes' play The Clouds as slander that contributed to the trial and subsequent condemning to death of Socrates although other satirical playwrights had also caricatured the philosopher. BRANDT, Geeraert.
1607. Alden & Landis 687/21; Cat. NHSM, p. 843; Sabin 7405; for the author: NNBW VI, cols. 184-187. Large paper copy of the first edition, in the original Dutch, of the standard biography of the great Dutch naval hero Admiral Michiel Adriaansz. de Ruyter (1607-1676), who scored several major victories against the French and English, the best known abroad being the Raid on Chatham, one of the worst defeats of the British Royal Navy. For the present work Brandt used numerous original documents from De Ruyter's son and other private individuals, as well as from official government sources. "This resulted in a book that was not only based on good information, but through his exalted, lucid and engaging style also became a true folk-book in the best sense of the word" (NNBW).De Ruyter fought the English off the coast of West Africa, the Caribbean, temporarily took St John's, New Foundland, and even considered retaking New York. While the binding is somewhat scuffed along the spine, the book itself is in very good condition, with only an occasional spot. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

GARNIER Robert
[Click Below for Full Description]

Palau, 16753 [Attributes: Hard Cover]
