LUTHER, Martin (1483-1546).
Strassburg: Theodosium Rihel, 1606. Hardcover. Good+. Pocket-sized 12mo (130 x 75mm). Pagination: [4], CCLXII, [8] ff. Signatures: [inserted 2 leaves], A-Y(12), Z(11, lacking final blank (stub) but inserted five leaves). Old German Type. Each page printed within an elaborate woodcut border of masks, putti, vessels, birds, animals and scrolling, ornament. Seventeenth-century full vellum, stamped in blind with central lozenge of crucifixion (front cover) and ornament (back cover), large remnants of leather ties; (outer edges somewhat soiled and worn, binding a bit rubbed, otherwise an excellent survival for its prospective use.) An early owner has added several leaves at the front and rear upon which are transcribed several additional psalms and biblical verses (Psalm 34, Jeremiah 3, Jeremiah 30, John 1:1, Corinthians 1:10, John 1:2). Other markings “@ 1606” in this same hand on the first inserted leaf at front. By this date in the inscriptions, “This psalm booklet” (Dises Psalmen Büchlein) and a man “Carlo” from “Strassburg” may be making corrections at time of early press. A later date on this leaf is 1776 along with an unknown monogram or printer’s mark (quite reminiscent of Theodosius Rihel’s (fl. 1555-1608) printer’s mark but with different letters S & K). During a critical period of time for the church, Martin Luther saw the Psalms not only as the central model to Christian prayer, but as a key biblical book that would spark a revival and lay the scriptural foundation for the Protestant movement. Luther said, “find in it [the Psalter] also yourself... a … [Click Below for Full Description]

The contents of these books were enriched over time. A work in two sections that became known as De Cæremoniis Cardinalium et Episcoporum in eorum diœcesibus (Ceremonies of Cardinals and Bishops in Their Own Dioceses) was added in the sixteenth century. Pope Clement VIII's Cæremoniale Episcoporum was based on these texts and on others that have now been lost. (Balbi, Gasparo). De Bry, Johann Theodor
Frankfurt, Wolfgang Richter, 1606. Folio (210 x 319 mm). (4), 126, (4) pp.; 22 ff. Title within engraved figurative border. With an engraved vignette, 22 engraved plates (2 of which are double-page-sized). Contemp. brown calf with gilt borders and decoration on middle of covers; blindtooled spine rebacked. Traces of ties. Book seven of Théodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", the greatest single collection of material on early voyages to the East Indies, which is considered unique in its extraordinary wealth of cartographical and visual material. Crucially, this much-sought volume includes Gasparo Balbi's groundbreaking account of the Middle East, first published in 1590 as "Viaggio dell' Indie Orientali" - a mere 16 years before this present issue, making this the second appearance in print altogether and the first Latin translation. Balbi, a Venetian jewel merchant, travelled extensively in the Arabian Peninsula in search of precious stones. From Venice he sailed for Aleppo, proceeding to Bir and from there overland to Baghdad, descending the Tigris to Basra, where he embarked for India. While in the Gulf, he studied the pearl industry, noting that the best pearls were to be found at Bahrain and Julfar. He refers to islands in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi (including Sir Bani Yas and Das) and to several coastal settlements that were to become permanently established, such as Dubai and Ras al Khaima. Balbi was the first to record the place names along the coast of modern Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. Practically "none of the names of places on the coast between Qatar and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Estienne, Charles
Presso Mattio Valentin, 1606.
(Schlosser). Cicognara 4349. Fossati Bellani 2251 (altra ed.). Schlosser Magnino, pp. 367 - 369. Cicogna 4462. … [Click Below for Full Description]

GREGORIUS PETRUS
sumptibus Ioannis Pillehotte, 1606. Pp. (16) 168; 298 (2); (24) 851 (200). Cfr. Kvk.; non in Sapori..
