Edizione francese. Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571- Amsterdam 1638)
- Prima carte à figures della penisola - Incisione in rame, acquaforte e bulino, 1606, firmata e datata in lastra in basso a destra. [Click Below for Full Description]

RAMUSIO, Giovanni Battista.
Venice, 1606. Woodcut, printed area 275 x 375mm. An important early map of New England and Canada, with the first use of the name 'New France', published in Ramusio's 'Raccolta di Navigationi et Viaggi'. Although it was probably designed by Giacomo Gastaldi from his own 'Tierra Nueva' of 1548, the larger scale allows better detail. It shows the Hudson River and the St. Lawrence as one large loop; the New York area is 'Angoulesme', with 'Flora' believed to be the south of Long Island; 'Port Real' is Newport Bay and 'Port du Refuge' is Narragansett Bay. The importance of the Grand Banks is highlighted by the number of fishing boats decorating the seas around Newfoundland. This example was printed from the second block, cut in 1565 after the first was destroyed by a fire in the printing house of Thomaso Guinti after only a year's use. A noticeable difference is the addition of a few weeping willows. The 1606 edition is recognisable by evidence of woodworm damage to the printing block and the pagination numbers '353' and '354'. BURDEN: 25.

Ovide
Dimensions : 25,2 x 18 cm. Italian edition, Thurnmayer issue (one of two simultaneous issues), of a fortification atlas of the Low Countries, published in the same year in German as Schau-platz desz Niederlandes. World map - Willem Bleau, 1606 or later
1606. "Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula" copper engraving first published in 1606 by Willem Bleau in Amsterdam. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 55 x 41 cm. Nice example of Blaeu's classic world map in the so-called Mercator projection. This is one of the most famous landmarks of 17th-century cartography. Engraved and signed by Joshua van den Ende, reduced from Blaeu's wall map of 1605, it first appeared as a separate publication in 1606. In 1630 it was incorporated into Willem Blaeu's "Atlantis Appendix" and then into the "Atlas Novus" in all subsequent editions until 1658. Its influence was enormous, and it was closely copied by some of the greatest Dutch cartographers, such as Pieter Van der Keere and Johannes Janssonius. Others, such as the house of Hondius, were forced to produce their own highly decorative maps to compete. Geographically, the map was a reduction of Blaeu's large map of the world published in 1605. The charming cartouche in the interior of North America mentions its discovery by Columbus in 1492 and being named after Amerigo Vespucci in 1499. There is some confusion in the depiction of the landmass of the East coast of the United States, probably as a result of Indian reports of large bodies of water inland, almost certainly the Great Lakes. California is correctly shown as a peninsula. The Le Maire straits, separating Tierra del Fuego from South America, copied from an earlier map by Hondius, are clearly shown. In the north, a note beside "Nova Zembla" in the Arctic declares that it was reached by Willem Barents in 1596. I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very scarce. Richard Field (1561-1616) was an English ecclesiological theologian associated with the work of Richard Hooker. Field was a close friend and associate of Hooker, who was the pre-eminent Anglican theologian of his day, and one of the most influential figures in Anglican history. Field's major work, Of the Church (1606), was an affirmation of the Church of England against the Roman Catholic Church. Field maintained that Anglican piety and polity continued the pre-Tridentine Catholic conciliar tradition. "Field's principal work, Of the Church, Five Bookes, was first published in London in 1606, printed by Humfrey Lownes and dedicated to the archbishop of Canterbury, Richard Bancroft. In fact this volume contained only the first four books. Another impression, with many errata corrected, was printed by Nicholas Okes, probably in 1614, but still dated 1606 on the title-page, and with the printer's name omitted." - DNB CONDITION In a full vellum binding. Externally, smart. There is some mild wear to the extremities, including some discolouration. Binding expertly restored - probably in the early 20th century. Spine relaid and some gilt replaced, with loss in places. Charles II, at the outbreak of the Popish Plot, did tell Barillon openly that Titus Oates, the inventor of the Plot, was a villain, and that the Plot itself an invention, but that it would be unwise to say so publicly._______ Barillon was often a conduit for pleas for clemency to Charles, (sometimes acti … [Click Below for Full Description]

Newcomb for John Holden, 1651.Edition: 1st edition Size: 9.25 cm x 14.5 cmPages: 64+243+6 Full brown calf with box, previously properly conserved.Sir William Davenant or D'Avenant (bap. 1696, d.1668), English dramatist and poet. An ardent royalist, the Poet Laureate Davenant was outlawed on the charge of high treason by Parliament in 1641 after participation in the First Army Plot. He began work on the epic poem Gondibert, a combination of Renaissance drama, classical epic and Hobbesian philosophical theories of state, after fleeing to France in the wake of Royalist defeat. Its composition and publication was interrupted by his capture at sea en route to take up his position as lieutenant governor of Maryland. Imprisonment on the Isle of Wight, a sentence of death (later commuted, apparently following intervention from Milton) and subsequent imprisonment in the Tower of London followed. Much discussed on publication in Cromwellian England, scholarly attention has since focused upon the prefaratory letter to Thomas Hobbes, and his reply, both of which included here. Published in both quarto and octavo format in 1651, no publication priority has been proven, though it is deduced by C.M. Dowling . Shipping: All items are packaged and prepared with the utmost care. BOMPAR (Pierre Jean de) & HONDIUS (Jodocus).
[Amsterdam, 1606-1608]. 353 x 509 mm. Koeman, 4700:1A.
