Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Willem Janszoon BLAEU (Uitgeest 1571 - Amsterdam 1638)
Kulesho. First Jaggard edition (?piracy). Woodcut headpiece and printer's ornaments on title and "Of the Colours" section title, woodcut initials. [110] pp. Collation: A-G^8 (A1, G8 blank, -G8). Small 8vo. The Corser-Huth-Hartz-Pirie Copy. The first Jaggard edition and the fourth overall edition of the Essayes of statesman and philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Jaggard made no entry of this or his 1612 and 1613 editions of the Essayes in the Stationers' Register, and so it has been customary to regard his editions as piracies. Jackson gently disputes this notion in the note to Pforzheimer 29, suggesting that a later transfer of rights to Jaggard's widow in 1624, as well as the silence of Hopper and Beale (who did register their rights with the Stationers' Company), argues for Jaggard having some right to the Essayes. "In some manner, therefore, Jaggard must have himself secured 'rights' which the Stationers' Company regarded as transferable even though not previously entered in the Register" (Pforzheimer). In any case, a rare edition: we trace only this copy at auction. The Es … [Click Below for Full Description]

JACOBS, Heyman.
Not found recorded; cf. BMN I, p. 502; Krivatsy 6188; KVK & WorldCat (similar 1606, 1614, & 1638 eds.). Only copy located of the only known Rotterdam edition of a very popular household medical guide for the use of the common folk, by Heyman Jacobs (active 1596-1645), identified on the title-page only as "H.I.", a Catholic in Haarlem who wrote two books on folk medicine, as well as folk and school books on other subjects. After the preliminaries, the medical herbal proper gives accounts of the medicinal properties of nuts, berries, herbs, grains, fruits, roots, flowers and other plants, foods or substances, with instructions for their preparation and use to cure or prevent illnesses. The account of tobacco, not yet cultivated in the Netherlands when Jacobs wrote, notes that it is imported from the West Indies and can be smoked in a pipe or steeped in wine overnight for drinking. The book continues with a "Medicinael remedi boecxken", with medicinal recipes intended for the poor, arranged by the various ailments, and ends with "Een schone visitatie, by den siecken ende krancke menschen" a guide for visiting and comforting the sick and dying. More than twenty pre-1700 editions survive, but most copies were worn out with use so that all editions are now rare and some are lost.In very good condition, with only a 2 cm tear in the text of 1 leaf and a couple small marginal chips, not approaching the text, and only slightly trimmed, preserving point holes in most quires. Unrecorded Rotterdam edition of a popular guide to herbal medicine.

"Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula' copper engraving first published in 1606 by Willem Bleau in Amsterdam. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 55 x 41 cm.Nice example of Blaeu"s classic world map in the so-called Mercator projection. This is one of the most famous landmarks of 17th-century cartography. Engraved and signed by Joshua van den Ende, reduced from Blaeu"s wall map of 1605, it first appeared as a separate publication in 1606. In 1630 it was incorporated into Willem Blaeu"s "Atlantis Appendix' and then into the "Atlas Novus' in all subsequent editions until 1658. Its influence was enormous, and it was closely copied by some of the greatest Dutch cartographers, such as Pieter Van der Keere and Johannes Janssonius. Others, such as the house of Hondius, were forced to produce their own highly decorative maps to compete.Geographically, the map was a reduction of Blaeu's large map of the world published in 1605. The charming cartouche in the interior of North America mentions its discovery by Columbus in 1492 and being named after Amerigo Vespucci in 1499. There is some confusion in the depiction of the landmass of the East coast of the United States, probably as a result of Indian reports of large bodies of water inland, almost certainly the Great Lakes. California is correctly shown as a peninsula. The Le Maire straits, separating Tierra del Fuego from South America, copied from an earlier map by Hondius, are clearly shown. In the north, a note beside "Nova Zembla' in the Arctic declares that it was reached by Willem Barents in 1596. In the Fa … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Devon and Cornwall Ministers]
[Printed by R. Schilders]: [Middelburg], 1606. Printer not cited - details from ESTC; pp. [6], [1], 2-66 [Signatures: A-I4]. Later Victorian [?] binding of black morocco with plain dark green pebbled-cloth boards, gilt lettering to the spine. Head/tail of the spine chipped otherwise very good. Contents remarkably good, clean and tight, with a little light pencil highlighting and ticks to margins. All printed marginal notes present and untrimmed with the exception of the final two leaves where a couple of marginal notes are mimimally cropped; last leaf with very small (4 x 3 mm) chip to fore-edge, very light staining to title page. A very good copy. A reply by the Deven and Cornwall Ministers to Thomas Hutton's "Reasons for Refusal of Subscription to the booke of Common Praier..." (Oxford 1605). While this book appears in a number of major libraries, we have been unable to find any auction records or any catalogue records. A pencil note to the verso of the front free endpaper states £56 -1945, i.e. about £2,200 at today's prices. [Davidson's bibliography of Devon p. 93; ESTC Citation No. S104342]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Quarto.
