Jodocus HONDIUS (1563 - 1612)
Very attractive map of Castillia with Madrid and Toledo in the center of the map. Mercator's sons and grandsons, were all cartographers and made their contributions in various ways to his atlas. Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the complete edition in 1595. The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus, published enlarged editions which dominated the map market for the following twenty to thirty years.

?Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula? copper engraving first published in 1606 by Willem Bleau in Amsterdam. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 55 x 41 cm.Nice example of Blaeu?s classic world map in the so-called Mercator projection. This is one of the most famous landmarks of 17th-century cartography. Engraved and signed by Joshua van den Ende, reduced from Blaeu?s wall map of 1605, it first appeared as a separate publication in 1606. In 1630 it was incorporated into Willem Blaeu?s ?Atlantis Appendix? and then into the ?Atlas Novus? in all subsequent editions until 1658. Its influence was enormous, and it was closely copied by some of the greatest Dutch cartographers, such as Pieter Van der Keere and Johannes Janssonius. Others, such as the house of Hondius, were forced to produce their own highly decorative maps to compete.Geographically, the map was a reduction of Blaeu's large map of the world published in 1605. The charming cartouche in the interior of North America mentions its discovery by Columbus in 1492 and being named after Amerigo Vespucci in 1499. There is some confusion in the depiction of the landmass of the East coast of the United States, probably as a result of Indian reports of large bodies of water inland, almost certainly the Great Lakes. California is correctly shown as a peninsula. The Le Maire straits, separating Tierra del Fuego from South America, copied from an earlier map by Hondius, are clearly shown. In the north, a note beside ?Nova Zembla? in the Arctic declares that it was reached by Willem Barents in 1596. In the Fa … [Click Below for Full Description]

TIMMERMANS, I.A. (= Daniel HEINSIUS?)].
- Landwehr, Emblem Books Low Countries 215 (3 copies); Praz, p. 96 (note); STCN (4 copies). Very rare edition using the engraved title-page and plates of Daniel Heinsius's first original emblem book, but with a different Latin text, the only edition with the present distichs in Latin by the otherwise unknown I.A. Timmermans, possibly a humorous pseudonym of Heinsius, using a Dutch pseudonym for this Latin edition instead of the Latin pseudonym Theocritus à Ganda, which he used in 1606 for the Dutch Spiegel vande . vrouwen.Although the title-page and the engraved emblems are the same as Heinsius's earlier Emblemata amatoria, the accompanying poetry is quite different. The first poem is signed with the initials I.A.T. and emblem 24 with the full name I.A. Timmermans. Also interesting is that three of the emblems bear the name of Hugo Grotius, but his actual contribution is unknown.Water stains in lower margin (a few leaves restored), one quire misbound, some occasional thumbing and first three leaves slightly soiled. Reasonable copy.

Jakob ROSOLENZ (c. 1570-1629).
Graz: Georg Widmanstetter 1606 - 4° (16 x 20.5 cm): [11] (Title page printed in red and black), 158, [41], contemporary velum with gilt blind-stamped tooling (paper slightly age-toned with tiny tears and folds, hand written-notes and ex-libris on fly leaves and title page, binding slightly dusty with small holes and cracking to the spine). This work is an extremely important and eminently readable primary source on the activities of the Counterreformation in Inner Austria during the turn of the 16th to 17th Centuries. It consists of the entertaining response of the Roman Catholic provost Jakob Rosolenz (c. 1570-1629) to a work written by David Rungius, Professor of Thelogy in Wittenberg, entitled Bericht und Erinnerung von der Tyrannischen Bäpstischen Verfolgung des heil. Evangelii in Steyermark, Kärnten und Krain (1601). While Rungius’ book was a dry, scholarly and theocratic attack on the Counterreformation, Rosolenz’s reprise is a remarkably unacademic, honest and entertaining account written by a frontline participant in many of the dramatic events of Archduke Ferdinand III’s campaign against Protestantism in Inner Austria. For over four centuries, Rosolenz’s book has remained one of the most authoritative primary sources on the Counterreformation in the region, and perhaps the most engaging and enjoyable to read. Until the late 1590s, a very uneasy environment prevailed in Inner Austria, whereupon the Roman Catholic Archdukes of the Habsburg family ruled over a largely Protestant populous, dominated by a mainly Protestant noble class. KEPLER (Johannes)

Important early map of the Straits of Magellan, predating the discovery of the Straits of Le Maire. A classic early Mercator map, featuring 3 large strapwork cartouches, one of which includes a profile view of the entrance to the Strait. The ornate compass rose point downward, indicating North at the bottom of the map. Seven sailing ships and both land and sea creatures are illustrated. The Southern Land is identified as Tierra Del Fuogo. In the Strait, there are approximately 15 place names identified, along with 30 - 40 soundings. Rhumb lines emanate from the compass rose. The coast line of Tierra del Fuego quickly turns from charted lands to conjecture, trailin … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Subscription receipt for the Lexicon heptaglotton].
1606. 1 f. (c. 190:85 mm). With autogr. signature and papered seal. Payment receipt for the final installment for one of the earliest works in British printing history published by subscription: "Received this second day of May in the year of our Lord God 1664 of John Gill Esquire the summe of twenty shillings being the full intire payment of four pounds by him Subscribed or Promised towards the Printing of a Lexicon and Grammars of the Orientall Languages: Witnesse my hand and seal, the day and yeare above written [...]". The receipt is filled in and signed by the theologian and Semitic scholar Dr. Edmund Castell, and the work subscribed is Castell's life-work, the 'Lexicon Heptaglotton'. Upon this work, "which has long challenged the admiration, and defied the competition, of foreigners; and which [...] has raised an eternal monument of literary fame" (Dibdin I, 34), Castell had been at work since 1651; it was published in two folio volumes in 1669, five years after Gill completed his payment and twelve years after the publication of Brian Walton's six-volume polyglot Bible edition, in the preparation of which Castell had been a valuable help and to which the 'Lexicon' was issued as a supplement. In his DNB article on Castell, the orientalist and historian Stanley Lane-Poole recounts the story of the Lexicon's composition, told with "sad simplicity" in the dedication to Charles II: "The eighteenth year of composition, he writes, has been reached, and that long period has been filled with unremitting toil of seldom less than sixteen or eighteen hours a day, with constant v … [Click Below for Full Description]

HONDIUS (Jodocus).
[1606-1608]. 341 x 496 mm.
